The institute achieved excellent credentials and has done meritorious activities during this short time span. The year saw a change of guard at IIST and Dr K. S. Dasgupta after five and a half years of stewardship handed over the charge to me. I place on record my appreciation for his immense contributions in enhancing the academic and research profile of the institute. This academic year 140 students joined for the three undergraduate programs and 79 students for the 15 post-graduate programs in various highly sought after specializations. In the same period, of the 145 undergraduate students who passed out, 101 students obtained placement in ISRO. A quantum jump in the strength of PhD scholars was achieved with the joining of 42 full time scholars and 9 sponsored by ISRO/DOS. Thus, for first time, the total PhD scholars strength exceeded 100. During 2016-17, the institute welcomed 9 new faculty members with outstanding academic record and research credentials to its faculty pool. With this, the strength of faculty at IIST stands at 100. Our faculty members continue to make valuable contributions towards teaching, along with advancing their areas of research. More than 143 referred research publications came out in the reporting period from our faculty and research scholars. This year, IIST organized fifteen national level workshops and conferences in various areas of space science, space technology, culture and humanities. Our students are vigorously involved in research projects within the institute and also in collaboration with various ISRO centers. Many eminent personalities of international repute visited our institute during this period to engage with students and staff on various scientific discussions and for knowledge sharing. The institute continues relentlessly on path of dedicated hard work and academic excellence. It was ranked 28th among all Engineering Institutions in the country (35th among all Indian Universities and 56th among overall category) in April 2017 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. As our nation shows economic and technological progress, as ISRO continues to enthrall us with its spectacular achievements and benefits and use of space technology becomes further entrenched in our society, the role of IIST in creating tomorrows space technology innovators and leaders will grow bigger. I am sure every student, faculty and staff of IIST will continue to contribute in building the space future, we all envision. Dr. V. K. It offers undergraduate, post- graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programmes in broad areas of space science, technology and applications. The institute, committed to excellence in teaching, learning and research, fosters state-of-the-art research and development in space studies and provides a think-tank to explore new directions for the Indian space programme. IIST is a solid, concrete pathway where the sure-footed youth wishing to be a part of the Indian Space Program can find their way to being among the like minded scientists and engineers who have given us a comprehensive window to the Universe. Strengthening the C4ISR Capabilities of India’s Armed Forces: The Role of Small Satellites ABSTRACT Small satellites have gained considerable importance in recent years. Although small spacecraft have existed for decades, their military applications have recently gained prominence owing to technological advances in their development and integration into the armed services of the major spacefaring countries across the world. This paper analyses the significance of small satellites in the C4ISR capabilities of the three service branches of the Indian military. Small satellites are not a panacea for the C4ISR needs of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, but will help partially address their sensor-related requirements. They also contribute to a multi-layered and distributed capability for the Indian armed services. Investment in Small Satellites should assume greater salience in Indian defence planning in the coming years.     Tirupati Architecture Galore by newsdesk There has been long and serious debate on the origins of the deity. Writes Nanditha Krishna in her book Balaji-Venkateshwara: Lord of Tirumala-Tirupati, An Introduction: ,Hindu deities are generally identified by their attributes, vehicles and distinguishing marks. Venkatesha has no attributes. The original stone image has a crescent mark on the forehead and holds nothing, the jewelled conch and discus being later detachable additions.' Krishna points to some distinctly Shaivite features such as matted locks, snake-shaped ornaments and cobras slung over the right arm. The drapery of the lord resembles a sari and the ceremonial bath is performed only on a Friday with sandal paste and turmeric (women's cosmetics), hinting at the worship of a goddess, to the chanting of Sri (Lakshmi) Sukta. There are also several clues pointing to the deity being Subrahmanya, such as the temple's location on a hill and the hunting festival associated with it, mentioned in ancient Tamil literature. It was Sri Ramanujacharya (1017-1137) who is believed to have established the temple as a Vaishnava kshetra. Regardless of the debate and its direction, even the Alwars, though staunch Vaishnavites, saw both Shiva and Vishnu in the image. The earliest recorded reference to the temple is by the Tamil scholar Tholkappiar in the 2nd century BCE, who referred to the Tirumala Hill as the northern boundary of the Tamil world. Tamil Sangam literature, dated between 2nd and 8th centuries CE, also has many references to the temple and deity. The ancient name of this holy site was Vengadam, from the Sanskrit word Venkata, which means `destroyer of sins'.

    PREFEASIBILITY REPORT 1.0 Introduction Nellore district is one of the 9 coastal districts it’s situated in the south eastern part of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded on the north by Prakasam District on the East by Bay of Bengal on the South by Chittoor District and Chengalpattu District of Tamilanadu and on the West by Veligonda Hills which separate it from Kadapa District. The district broadly 2 natural divisions from North to South. Southern Nellore is an industrial belt, with many large scale industries including public sectors undertaking & MNCS. It has a fascinating mix of traditional & modern industries, ranging from small artisan workshops to huge multinational companies, Micro and Small Enterprises and large scale Industries. The handloom sector of the district is also a major small scale industry of the district and a large number of people depend on it for living. Some of the important industries of the region are Mica Mines and thermal power plant. The Krishnapatnam port which is located 20 kilometres from the district serves as a major centre for economic activity of the district. Industrial operations lead to considerable generation of hazardous waste. The major hazardous waste- generating industries in Nellore include textile, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, paint and dye, fertilizers, Mica, Paper manufacturing, inorganic chemicals, power plants, and general engineering industries. Hazardous wastes from the industrial sectors mentioned above contain heavy metals, cyanides, pesticides, complex aromatic compounds (such as PCBs), and other chemicals which are toxic, flammable, reactive, corrosive or have explosive properties affecting the environment.
