Galatasaray SK v PSV Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadium, Istanbul Wednesday, 18 October 2006 - 20:45CET Group C - Matchday 3

Galatasaray SK are aiming to revive their prospects in UEFA Champions League Group C against a PSV Eindhoven side with a history of disappointments on Turkish soil.

• Although they sit three points behind both Liverpool FC and PSV going into Matchday 3, the manner of the Turkish champions' defeat at Liverpool on 27 September hinted at better things to come. Trailing 3-0 to goals from Peter Crouch (2) and Luis García, Erik Gerets' men fought their way back to 3-2 as Ümit Karan struck twice in quick succession in the 59th and 65th minutes.

• That fightback may have ultimately proved futile but it should ensure some optimism that they can add to the one point collected at home to FC Girondins de Bordeaux on Matchday 1 – as should PSV's record of four defeats and a draw (and only two goals scored) from five previous visits to Turkey.

• PSV also have cause for confidence as Ronald Koeman's team already have one away win to their name in Group C and have yet to concede a goal. Mika Väyrynen's 65th-minute effort earned the Dutch champions a 1-0 win at Bordeaux on Matchday 2 as they moved on to four points, level with early leaders Liverpool FC who visit Bordeaux in the section's other game.

Emotional encounter • Whatever the outcome, it promises to be an emotional encounter for Galatasaray coach Gerets who served PSV with distinction as both a player (1985-92) and coach (1999-2002). The Belgian was an ever-present for PSV during their triumphant 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup campaign, in which he starred alongside his rival coach, Koeman.

• Both Gerets and Koeman appeared for PSV against Galatasaray in their first-round success in September 1987. PSV won 3-0 in Eindhoven - with Koeman scoring the second goal - prior to a 2-0 reverse in Istanbul.

• Gerets was PSV's coach by the time the clubs next met in the UEFA Champions League first group stage in 2001/02. Although PSV were 3-1 winners on home soil, goals from Sergen Yalçın and Arif Erdem ensured a 2-0 victory for Galatasaray at the Ali Sami Yen stadium on 30 October 2001 which carried them through to the second group stage in second place – at PSV's expense.

Survivors • Only three players involved that night could feature here: goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón and forward Ümit Karan, who started for Galatasaray, and full-back Eric Addo who was on the bench for PSV.

• While Galatasaray's past matches against PSV have provided their only encounters with Dutch opponents, PSV have played ten times against teams from Turkey. However, their five victories have all come at the PSV Stadium.

Team facts

Galatasaray SK

UEFA club competition milestones • Galatasaray made history in 1999/00 when they defeated Arsenal FC on penalties in the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen to become the first Turkish team to triumph in a UEFA club competition. Fatih Terim's side held their nerve in the shoot-out after 120 goalless minutes, running out 4-1 winners and going on to overcome Real Madrid CF 2-1 in Monaco in August to add the UEFA Super Cup to their trophy cabinet.

• The Istanbul club are regular participants in Europe's premier club competition, and reached the semi-finals of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1988/89, losing 5-1 on aggregate to eventual runners-up FC Steaua Bucuresti. Galatasaray have reached the competition's quarter-finals on three further occasions, but were defeated by AC Milan - who went on to lift the trophy - in 1962/63, Legia Warsawa seven years later and Real Madrid CF on their sole appearance to date in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League, in 2000/01.

UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Cup: 1999/00

Ten-year record (including current season) Galatasaray are appearing in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in three seasons, having defeated FK Mladá Boleslav in the third qualifying round. Before missing out on European competition altogether in 2004/05, the Turkish team had appeared in seven successive editions of the UEFA Champions League, reaching the last eight in 2000/01.

2005/06 season Domestic record: Galatasaray claimed the Turkish Superleague title for the first time in four seasons by pipping Fenerbahçe SK on the dramatic final day of a gripping title race. A run of six successive league wins seemed to have put Galatasaray in pole position to triumph, but a 4-0 defeat at Fenerbahçe left them level on points with their rivals with three games to go. That was still the situation ahead of the 34th and final round of matches, when Galatasaray's defeat of Kayserispor gave them the championship by two points.

European record: The Turkish team's participation in the UEFA Cup lasted only two matches as a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tromsø IL in the first round first leg proved costly. The Turkish team fell further behind on aggregate midway through the opening period of the second leg and, although Hakan Sükür scored a late equaliser on the night, Galatasaray bowed out 2-1 on aggregate.

Key facts • Galatasaray have played 193 games in UEFA club competition. To date, the Turkish club have recorded 70 wins, 50 draws and 73 defeats. In that time, they have scored 249 goals with 281 conceded.

2005/06 season Domestic record: PSV again won the title by ten points. This time AZ Alkmaar were their nearest rivals although that club were to lose out to AFC Ajax for the Netherlands' other UEFA Champions League place. PSV's third title in four seasons and thier 19th overall was enough to take them straight through to the group stage. Ajax stopped PSV winning the domestic double with a 2-1 victory in the Dutch Cup.

European record: PSV failed to score in any of their four away games in last season's competition. In the group stage, they lost 3-0 at Fenerbahçe SK and FC Schalke 04 either side of a 0-0 draw in Milan. Three home wins against all three clubs took them through in second place behind Milan. PSV came unstuck in the first knockout round, losing 5-0 on aggregate to Olympique Lyonnais.

Match facts

Galatasaray SK are looking for their first win in Group C as unbeaten PSV Eindhoven travel to Turkey. The Istanbul team's first two games have yielded a single point, from a goalless draw at home to FC Girondins de Bordeaux on Matchday 1 when PSV were held 0-0 by Liverpool FC. Galatasaray then went down 3-2 at Anfield while PSV produced a 1-0 win in Bordeaux to keep pace with Liverpool at the top of the table. Bordeaux welcome Liverpool in the other Matchday 3 game, a fixture that is reversed in a fortnight when Galatasaray visit the PSV Stadium. Bordeaux and Liverpool enjoy home advantage on Matchday 5, welcoming Galatasaray and PSV respectively, before the section concludes with Liverpool's visit to Galatasaray and PSV playing Bordeaux.

Galatasaray

• Ergün Penbe is still waiting to make his 50th appearance in the UEFA Champions League having missed both group games so far. The defender is the most experienced member of the Galatasaray squad, with Hasan Şaş close behind on 45 appearances.

• Six players have had a first taste of UEFA Champions League action this season; Mehmet Topal, Marcelo Adrian Carrusca, Ferhat Öztorun, Arda Turan, Necati Ateş and Hasan Kabze. Of those, all but Necati Ateş and Arda Turan were also taking their bows in UEFA club competition.

• Hakan Şükür is the top scorer in the current Galatasaray squad in both the UEFA Champions League and overall UEFA club competition. The striker has 13 goals in 35 games in Europe's premier club tournament - the next highest is Ümit Karan with six - and 36 in 82 European matches, with Saša Ilić second in the overall standings on 15 goals from 54 games.

• Ümit is one of eleven players on two goals in this season's competition having scored twice against Galatasaray. Louis Saha, Didier Drogba and Fernando Morientes lead the way on three strikes apiece.

• Rigobert Song is one of five players to have committed eight fouls in this season's competition, one fewer than Dudu and Liedson who have been penalised more frequently than anyone.

• Ümit was 30 on 1 October. Okan Buruk, meanwhile, is 33 the day after the PSV match.

• Galatasaray were held to a 1-1 home draw against Turkish Super League strugglers MKE Ankaragücü on Saturday. Ümit gave the Istanbul giants the lead with a diving header on the half-hour but Galatasaray's joy was short-lived as Tita equalised.

• The draw was Galatasaray's sixth from nine league games this season and left them languishing in mid-table.

• Coach Erik Gerets named an unchanged side from that which drew against on 30 September. Aydın Yılmaz made his first appearance of the season as a first-half substitute, replacing Hasan Şaş, who picked up a thigh injury.

• Hasan Şaş joined an injury list already including Özgürcan Özcan (broken nose) and Oğuz Sabankay (shoulder), while Necati missed the match as he is not yet fit having recently recovered from injury.

• Following the game against Ankaragücü, Gerets said: "Some players are playing below par. The gap between the higher-placed teams and us is widening and the worst thing is that we don't deserve to be in a higher position with the way we are playing. We are going through a bad spell but we will never give up. Against PSV we have to make some changes, otherwise it could be a rout."

• Galatasaray were held 3-3 at home by Konyaspor in the league on 30 September despite leading 1-0 and 3-1. Ayhan Akman, Saša Ilić and Arda Turan all found the net in the game but Geret's side had to settle for another draw.

• Sabri Sarıoğlu made his senior debut for Turkey in his country's 1-0 UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group C win against Hungary on 7 October. The 22-year-old was fielded on the right side of the defence by coach Fatih Terim. In his second game, against Moldova four days late, Sabri provided the pass from which Hakan Şükür opened the scoring to set Turkey on their way to a 5-0 win to keep pace with the European champions Greece at the head of the standings.

• Hakan Şükür scored his first international goal for 784 days when he opened the scoring shortly before half-time against Moldova. That strike opened the floodgates for the 35-year-old – who last found the net in an international in a friendly against Belarus on 18 August 2004 – and he went on to score four in Frankfurt.

• The goals took the forward's total for his country to 50 and cemented his position as Turkey's all-time leading goalscorer.

• In addition, Hakan Şükür is now the leading current international striker in Europe. Jan Koller of the Czech Republic is his closest rival with 47 goals from 74 appearances following his effort against the Republic of Ireland on 11 October, the same mark Pauleta reached from his 88 games before ending his Portugal career after the FIFA World Cup finals.

• The match with Moldova marked the second time that Hakan Şükür had scored four goals in a single match for Turkey. He first achieved the feat in a qualifier for the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals against Wales on 20 August 1997.

• Arda has recently appeared in a television commercial for a leading telephone operator in Turkey.

PSV

• Michael Reiziger and Phillip Cocu are within three games of 75 appearances in the UEFA Champions League. Both have featured in 72 matches and could reach the mark in the trip to Bordeaux on Matchday 5, although neither featured on Matchday 2.

• Patrick Kluivert, meanwhile, could bring up his century of UEFA club competition appearances the same night; the striker has currently played 97 times. Reiziger is also closing in on the mark with 95 appearances, while Cocu has featured in UEFA club competition 114 times.

• The Matchday 1 draw with Liverpool marked the UEFA Champions League debuts of both Carlos Salcido and Edison Méndez. Diego Tardelli and Roy Beerens both appeared for the first time two weeks later away to Bordeaux.

• Kluivert is the top UEFA Champions League goalscorer in the PSV squad with 29 strikes to his name. No other player has reached double figures, although Cocu is on nine goals.

• PSV are one of five teams who are still yet to concede a goal; FC Bayern München, Olympique Lyonnais, PFC CSKA Moskva and AC Milan are the others.

• Jefferson Farfán celebrates his 22nd birthday on 26 October, three days before Cocu turns 36.

• PSV claimed a 4-1 home victory against Roda JC in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday in a match that Roda had led until the closing stages. The visitors claimed an early lead through Davy De Fauw but, in the final quarter, substitute Farfán equalised shortly before Roda were reduced to ten men as Jan-Paul Saeijs was sent off. PSV made the most of the advantage with Alex, Ismaël Aissati and Roy Beerens all finding the net late on.

• Beerens's goal was his first for PSV.

Last updated 17.10.2006 9:36:31CET uefa.com 8 Galatasaray SK v PSV Eindhoven MATCH PRESS KIT

• Farfán was making his first appearance following a month on the sidelines with concussion, which he suffered on 17 September against Feyenoord. Captain Cocu also returned to the starting lineup after four weeks out with a torn thigh muscle, meaning only Kluivert (knee) and long-term victim John de Jong are still unavailable to coach Ronald Koeman.

• "It is very nice to have options again," said Koeman. "For the first time I could concentrate on the players available and not have to think about those not with the squad."

• On the win against Roda, he said: "If you look at the way we played over the whole match, it was a deserved victory. The start did not work out as planned, however, and Roda started much sharper than us. We came back into the first half and should have scored a few goals, which we deserved after our first-half display."

• The Dutch champions could not continue a run of three successive Eredivisie wins as they were held to a 0-0 draw at SC Heerenveen on 1 October. Captain Cocu made his comeback from a thigh injury, replacing Ibrahim Afellay in the closing stages.

• Cocu's appearance was his 350th in Dutch league football and his 300th in the Eredivisie.

• An inexperienced PSV side also played a friendly against Belgian outfit K. Sint-Truidense VV on 4 October, losing 4-1. Cocu scored the opening goal in the match for PSV with a header early in the first half.

• Defender Michael Lamey is suspended for the match in Turkey following his sending-off on Matchday 2.

• For the second month in succession Netherlands coach Marco van Basten decided not to call up any PSV players for the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers against Bulgaria and Albania.

• Timmy Simons captained Belgium in their Group A games against Serbia on 7 October (0-1) and Azerbaijan (3-0) four days later. Simons scored the opening goal in the latter match, converting a first-half penalty.

• Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was part of the Brazil side who overcame Ecuador 2-1 in a friendly. Méndez was in the losing Ecuadorian team for the match in Stockholm, Sweden.

• Mika Väyrynen started Finland's 2-0 win against Kazakhstan on 11 October, also playing the majority of their 0-0 draw in Armenia four days earlier.

• Defender Csaba Fehér was part of the Hungary team that were consigned to a surprise 2-1 defeat against Malta having also started the 1-0 loss against Turkey on 7 October.

• Arouna Koné scored a hat-trick for Ivory Coast in their African Cup of Nations victory against Gabon on 8 October. He has yet to find the net for PSV in the Eredivisie this season, however.

• Aissati was a starter in the Netherlands Under-21 team's 2-1 friendly defeat by Denmark on 10 October before being substituted at half-time.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but none of the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A features three league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finished second in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature two domestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions. Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classified in third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placed finishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic league championship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC's record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end last season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons, United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition three times in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However, in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskva and FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cup second qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joined by FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yet to play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourth appearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition, Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are not involved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02) and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remaining UEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF and PFC CSKA Moskva.

UEFA information

FARE Action Week Anti-racism activities will take place at all games on UEFA Champions League Matchday 3 as part of the seventh FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) Action Week against racism and discrimination between 17 and 30 October. The activities will include the captains of all the teams wearing Unite Against Racism armbands, player-escort children sporting Unite Against Racism T-shirts, announcements being made to fans in stadiums over the loudspeaker calling for opposition to all forms of racism, and Unite Against Racism adverts being placed in matchday programmes as well as the official UEFA Champions League magazine Champions.

Such activities have been going on for several years, as UEFA has consolidated its partnership with the FARE network since the 2000/01 season by way of financial support - including UEFA's 2001 charity cheque worth CHF1m (€629,000) - conferences, publications and campaigns. A new guide called 'Tackling racism in club football' has been published by FARE and UEFA, and advises clubs on dealing with racist conduct on and off the field. A letter from the UEFA CEO was sent with the guide to all UEFA member associations, FIFA, FIFPro, UEFA disciplinary body members, and leading European clubs on 6 October.

"UEFA is proud to be backing FARE Action Week against racism and discrimination," said UEFA President Lennart Johansson. "We appreciate the opportunity to underline our unwavering commitment to eradicating racism in our game. We know racism can't be beaten in a single week, but we hope these activities will be a catalyst that engages more and more members of the football family in the fights against racism and discrimination."

Piara Powar, the director of FARE's UK partner Kick It Out, added: "As a unique coming together of the football family - from fan groups, migrants and ethnic minorities, to the biggest clubs in the game - the FARE Action Week is a statement as to the type of sport we all want to be involved with. The importance of an inclusive and discrimination-free game that actively reaches out to all communities is our goal. With the support of UEFA we know these ends are achievable."

2008 and 2009 finals The Luzhniki stadium in Moscow and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will stage the 2008 and 2009 UEFA Champions League finals respectively. UEFA's Executive Committee made the decision at its meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 4 October. The committee made its choice after assessing criteria such as stadium capacity, safety and security, access, transport, supporters' facilities and commercial potential. Athens will stage the 2007 final.

Strasbourg call The call for political and sporting bodies to work together for the good of European sport came out loud and clear in Strasbourg at the conclusion of the PACE-UEFA Play Fair With Sport conference on 29 September. "A healthy future for sport in Europe can only be achieved by politics and sport working together," read part of the closing statement from the conference at the Council of Europe, organised jointly by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly and UEFA.

Head coach profiles

Erik Gerets Date of birth: 18 May 1954 Nationality: Belgium Playing career: R. Standard de Liège, AC Milan, MVV Maastricht, PSV Eindhoven Coaching career: RFC Liège, K. Lierse SK, Club Brugge KV, PSV Eindhoven, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, VfL Wolfsburg, Galatasaray SK

Revered by Belgian fans as one of their greatest players, Erik Gerets has displayed similar acumen as a coach since hanging up his boots in 1992, picking up five championships with four different teams to date. A stout defensive presence during his playing days, Gerets' name is synonymous with R. Standard de Liège, for whom he played over 300 games in 12 seasons after joining as an 18-year-old. He won league (2) and cup honours with the Belgian side but, following brief spells with AC Milan and MVV Maastricht, it was with PSV Eindhoven that he stocked his trophy cabinet to the brim.

Gerets was inspirational in a side that won six league titles in seven years, also adding three Dutch Cups and their crowning glory, defeating SL Benfica on penalties to claim the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Tough-tackling Gerets, who won 86 international caps for Belgium, retired four years later and moved straight into management with RFC Liège. Two years later he was at K. Lierse SK and, in 1997, led them to the Belgian title – their first championship success for 37 years.

A year later he repeated the feat, this time at Club Brugge KV, before returning to his spiritual home at PSV where he led the club to two league trophies in four years. Following a barren spell in Germany with 1. FC Kaiserslautern and VfL Wolfsburg, Gerets was on the move again and in 2006, at the end of his first season, guided Galatasaray SK to the Turkish Superleague title.

Ronald Koeman Date of birth: 21 March 1963 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: FC Groningen, AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, Feyenoord Coaching career: Netherlands (assistant coach), FC Barcelona (assistant coach), SBV Vitesse, AFC Ajax, SL Benfica, PSV Eindhoven

Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking up the vacant position at SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian Giovanni Trapattoni. He guided the Lisbon club to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League and third place in Portugal before accepting the challenge of following Guus Hiddink at PSV Eindhoven in May 2006.

Ajax's fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the ArenA, winning a domestic double in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV as the Netherlands' top team, and Koeman resigned after UEFA Cup elimination. It is no surprise he has found his way to Eindhoven, as Koeman was a member of the PSV side that overcame Benfica in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, converting the opening kick in PSV's 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory after 120 goalless minutes.

As well as being an accomplished sweeper, Koeman was a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ball that he scored FC Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father's old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA European Championship. It was a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barça in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Yuri Baskakov RUS 10.05.1964 6 33

Yuri Baskakov is settling into life as a member of the UEFA refereeing élite, emulating his compatriot Valentin Ivanov among the top referees on the continent.

Baskakov, who is based in Moscow, was awarded his FIFA badge at the start of 1998 after an impressive rise through Russia’s domestic ranks. Most of his early appointments for UEFA were in youth matches before regular club competition assignments began coming his way in 1999, when he also was at the UEFA European Under-18 Championship final round.

Since then, Baskakov has continued to climb the refereeing ladder. A member of UEFA's highest category of referees since 2005, it is no surprise that Baskakov is a regular in the rarified air of the UEFA Champions League, taking charge of three games in the 2005/06 edition. He was also responsible for two 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers before kicking off the 2006/07 season with AEK Athens FC's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second-leg victory against Heart of Midlothian FC and the group-stage goalless draw between FC København and SL Benfica.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 24 August saw the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays one home and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) superior goal difference from all group matches played; e) higher number of goals scored; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be played over two legs on 20 February and 7 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season.
