The forgotten and misunderstood history of the Sexual Revolution The 1970s blew to smithereens an entire structure of sexual morality. Revolutions like that do not last forever. They cannot. But the ending of a revolution is not the same thing as the restoration of the old order. It is the institutionalization of a new one. --David Frum, How We Got Here The Sexual Revolution and the new normal There is no series of historical events that has impacted every human living in the Western world today—and even beyond—more than the Sexual Revolution. And yet, while many are certainly familiar with the term, almost no one can explain what the Sexual Revolution is. Internet pornography, legalized abortion, the gay liberation movement, hook-up culture, contraception, public nudity, transgenderism, and threats to religious freedom are all either part of or the direct result of the Sexual Revolution. Television, the film industry, advertising agencies, academia, the media, and the music industry have all been shaped by the Sexual Revolution, and play an incessantly active role in promoting it. We are so saturated by these influences that rarely do we even notice. We simply take it for granted that this is the way things are, often without questioning how or why these things came to be. For example, consider hook-up culture on campuses, now considered the norm and lionized in dozens of stupid campus comedy films. When I was attending Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, it was just accepted that the binge-drinking that took place was accompanied by casual sex—and if that wasn’t happening, it wasn’t for lack of effort on behalf of the students. -

Academic Culture at Michigan, 1938-1988: the Apotheosis of Pluralism
ACADEMIC CULTURE AT MICHIGAN, 1938-1988: THE APOTHEOSIS OF PLURALISM David A. Hollinger* What follows is not a complete account of Michigan's accomplishments during the Rackham era, with balanced attention to each department and school, with due recognition of the achievements of each president and dean. Instead, my inquiry is quite simple. There are a dozen or so major research universities with whom Michigan shares the academic leadership of the United States. When we look at Michigan since 1938 in relation to the history of this entire class of universities, what do we see? In what varieties of science and scholarship has Michigan made the most visible marks? Insofar as there is a "Michigan tradition," what is it? And are there aspects of Michigan's history that should be X-rated? When the Rackham Building was dedicated in 1938, the University of Michigan was obviously comfortable with its longstanding reputation as a national university. Senior in years to Wisconsin and Berkeley, its only two intellectual peers among public universities, Michigan was decidedly more l "eastern" in style and in composition. In 1938 Michigan boasted an out-of-state enrollment of about 43 percent.2 It was said to possess the largest living alumni of any university in the English-speaking world.3 And the Michigan alumni were formidable qualitatively as well as quantitatively: Michigan was the fourth largest baccalaureate producer of the American scientists then designated as distinguished in American Men of Science, outproducing both Wisconsin and Princeton in that category at a rate of almost two-to-one.4 On the occasion of Michigan's celebration, the year before, of one hundred years in Ann Arbor, a major address was delivered by Dean Christian Gauss of Princeton, perhaps the most respected humanistic educator of the interwar period, himself a native of Ann Arbor and holder of two degrees from Michigan.5 But Michigan was more egalitarian than its eastern, private counterparts. -
PCHC Webinar: What Are Obscenity Exemptions & Why Must They Be Repealed?
PCHC Webinar: What Are Obscenity Exemptions & Why Must They Be Repealed? By Judith Reisman, PhD. And Mary McAlister, Esq. Oct. 2017 © Materials Defined As Obscene Are Not Protected by the First Amendment. Roth v. United States, 354 U.S. 476 , 485 (1957) • A cornerstone of our Constitutional Republic is “freedom of speech” as stated in the First Amendment to the Constitution. • Over the years, the concept of “freedom of speech” has expanded beyond spoken or written words to include “expression” of all types, e.g., literature, art, political activity, photographs, broadcasts, internet postings, as courts have attempted to protect innovative methods of self-expression from censorship. • Throughout history, there have been limited categories of speech that are not protected by the First Amendment, which means that the government can ban the activity. • Obscenity • Libel/Slander/Defamation • Insulting or “fighting” words—those which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace, e.g., yelling2 “fire” in a crowded theater. Modern Definition of “Obscenity”: Material which deals with sex in a manner appealing to “prurient interest.” “Prurient interest” means “material having a tendency to excite lustful thoughts.” “Prurient interest,” the Court explained, Roth v. United States, 354 U.S. 476 , 485 (1957) Legal Test for Determining If Material is Obscene: 1. Whether ‘the average person, applying contemporary community standards* would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest; 2. Whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law; and 3.
