If it isn't, Dennis Hopper must be having considerable F difficulty explaining how he made such a horrendous cock-up of making 'Colors'. He has attempted to take the gratuitously cliched scenario of the old cop-young cop partnership and itonsform it into a gritty and realistic comment on life in Today's America. He pondered, he ogonised, he thought, he re-thought, but eventually he plumped for the tried and tested expendient of grittily and realistically beating and shooting a lot of people in graphic detail, right there in front of the camera. Explicit violence between the 'Crip' and 'Blood' gongs forms the core of 'Colors', but iustification of this with an argument of 'realism' is, in this case, untenable. Suspension of reality is never entirely possible whilst watching this film. The two central performances — from Robert Duvall and Sean Penn — ore impressive, but seem adrift in a superficial and unconvincing plot. The only anchors the film seems to have in reality are those in which the audience is grabbed by the throat and forced to gaze into the gaping chest-wounds of rapidly-expiring teenage gang members. Hopper's film suffers by catering too much to the mainstream: good elements of original film-making merely poke through a veneer of predictability, along with heavy-handed statements and social comment. The use of a police helicopter as a deus ex mochina device throughout the film is one such demonstration of the Hopper who mode 'Easy Rider' cracking the gloss, and indeed it is this which makes the final scenes as powerful os they are. However, in the end 'Colors' does not seem like the work of one mon thinking and working consistently. It is interesting, but ultimately only has enough 'moments' to make a good 20-minute short.
