  • The Suggestionists JAMIE HEWLETT
THE SUGGESTIONISTS JAMIE HEWLETT 21 June – 17 August 2019 Press release Lazinc is proud to present The Suggestionists, a solo exhibition by renowned artist, designer and co-founder of Gorillaz, Jamie Hewlett. Opening this month, it marks the gallery’s first Lazinc show with Hewlett, and will present three multi-media bodies of work. 29 Sackville Street W1S 3DX The collections shine a light on the conscious and unconscious, the everyday and the fantastical, all framed by Hewlett’s unique sense of wit. The psychogeographic works lazinc.com are a playful and dreamlike subversive reaction to cultural iconography and visions. Tarot, the first collection of works, is an homage to the world of tarotica. Inspired by a book on the legendary Tarot de Marseille deck by Chilean-French art filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, Hewlett has created 22 larger-than-life tarot cards. Taking three years to complete, the artist painstakingly hand-painted each one in watercolor, gouache and India ink. He has transformed the originals into dreamy and absurd scenes. Disinterested characters in L’Amoureux (The Lovers) are engaged in a half-hearted romantic dilemma, while a monkey can be seen groping a man in Le Mat (The Fool). The second collection, Honey, sees Hewlett’s take on the sexual exploitation of 60s and 70s movies. Revolving around the fictional character of HONEY a series of light boxes evoke a seedy kind of adult cinema lobby. Hewlett draws deeply from the lexicon of B-movie language to create posters that are audacious, saucy and, at the same time, deeply authentic – right down to the affectionately rude credits.

  • Girls Made Of? the Discourse of Girl Power in Contemporary U.S
WHAT ARE LITTLE (EMPOWERED) GIRLS MADE OF? THE DISCOURSE OF GIRL POWER IN CONTEMPORARY U.S. POPULAR CULTURE Rosalind Sibielski A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Lesa Lockford, Graduate Faculty Representative Cynthia Baron Kimberly Coates © 2010 Rosalind Sibielski All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor Beginning in the late 1990s, U.S. popular culture has been inundated with messages promoting “girl power.” This dissertation examines representations of girl power in the mass media, as well as popular literature and advertising images, in order to interrogate the ways in which the discourse of girl power has shaped cultural understandings of girlhood in the past twenty years. It also examines the ways in which that discourse has functioned as both an extension of and a response to social concerns about the safety, health and emotional well-being of girls in the United States at the turn of the millennium. Girl power popular culture texts are often discussed by commentators, fans and their creators as attempts to use media narratives and images to empower girls, either by providing them with models for how to enact empowered femininity or by providing them with positive representations that make them feel good about themselves as girls. However, this project is arguably limited by the focus in girl power texts on girls’ individual (as opposed to their structural) empowerment, as well as the failure of these texts to conceive of the exercise of power outside of patriarchal models.

  • Daft Punk Have Replaced Their Own Author Image with Robotic Representations That Reflect a Music That Deals with the Aesthetics of Technology
IDENTITY THROUGH REPRESENTATION: WHAT HIDDEN PERFORMERS REVEAL ABOUT IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION MATTHEW BROMBLEY Abstract Issues around identity are made most apparent when an aspect of identity is missing. Whilst modern pop star personas exploit the existence of the empirical human beings behind their identity constructions as a site for authentication, identification and commercial success, there are artist that have eschewed this approach in favour of hidden performances. Daft Punk have replaced their own author image with robotic representations that reflect a music that deals with the aesthetics of technology. Through creating the virtual pop band Gorillaz, Damon Albarn is able to reclaim his creative freedom to role-play and, in partnership with Jamie Hewlett, create music and a virtual world reflective of the digital technologies they are enabled by. Sia's anti-fame manifesto in billboard magazine set out her desire to forego the fame that accompanies the music that she has written for some of the world'd biggest pop stars. Her own music is deeply personal and her use of obscured identity has enabled her to express herself without trapping herself into a single, potentially stigmatising, identity. In all three cases, there are personal and creative freedoms that come from the removal of the artists’ personal image from the public gaze. However, to allow them to operate within the confines of the commercial imperatives of major label politics, these artists must replace the their personal appearance with an alternative author image. These post-modern constructions that are offered up in place of the artist’s personal appearance reveal the constructed nature of all pop personas, as well as highlighting the fluid and changing nature of the self-identities that we each must socially construct.

  • Goryle Na Scenie
Hologramy i death metal w serialu. Zanim jednak dokładniej opowiem o tej wyjątkowej kolaboracji, to pozostanę jeszcze przez chwilę w świecie Gorillaz i przytoczę fikcyjne początki animowanych muzyków, któ- re zostały zawarte w autobiografiiRise of the Ogre. Muszę jednak przestrzec czytelnika, że posługiwanie się rozróżnieniem na fikcję i autentyzm w przypadku Gorillaz jest odrobinę nieuzasadnione.

  • Jamie Hewlett
Gorilla thriller Inside the mind of Jamie Hewlett From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with art-pop noisemakers Gorillaz, dabblings with Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture. With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid 1990s as cocreator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then-roommate, Blur frontman Damon Albarn, he went on to create the unique cartoon band Gorillaz, a virtual pop group of animated characters, which recorded four studio albums and mounted breathtaking live spectacles. Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a Bafta for their Monkey animated sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. More recently, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett s practice. This new TASCHEN edition, Hewlett s first major monograph, illustrates this thrilling creative journey with over 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and up to the present day. Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Hewlett s exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath
