Sacramento State In the latest round of predictions for the NCAA Championships, Track and Field News Magazine picks the Trojan men fifth with 39 points and the Women of Troy outside the USC Quick Facts top 10 with 18 points. Trackwire.com has the USC men third with 38 points and the LOCATION: USC women tied for 11th with 20 points. Los Angeles, Calif. (213) 740-4201 TRACK & FIELD SID: Chris Huston LAST YEAR’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS (213) 740-3806 The USC women finished in the top three for the fourth-straight year at last year’s NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, LA., as their 57 points put them behind South Carolina and UCLA. Angela Williams won her fourth-consecutive NCAA 100m title, while teammate Natasha Mayers finished on her heels in second. Mayers also went on to win the 200m crown--the first such title for a USC woman. The Trojan men finished tied for 11th with 21 points as Dawid Jaworski was the high jump runner up, Julien Kapek took third in the triple jump and Ryan Wilson was sixth in the 110m HH. USC COACH RON ALLICE AT THE NCAAS Trojan coach Ron Allice’s men’s teams have finished in the top 10 at the NCAAs for six of the last eight years, including a third place finish in 1997. The Trojan men have also captured seven NCAA individual titles in his time at USC. His women’s teams have placed in the top five each of the last five years, including 2001’s NCAA team title. USC women have won 10 NCAA individual championships under Allice. The previous season—2001—the Trojans were 12th at the NCAA meet and 2nd in the conference, while snapping crosstown rival UCLA’s dual-meet win streak at 22. The seven seasons prior to 2001, Troy finished no lower than seventh at the NCAAs (including three top-5 finishes) and won three Pac-10 titles. During his tenure, Trojan men have won seven NCAA individual titles, garnered All-American acclaim 75 times and set seven school records—not an easy task considering the glorious track and field history at USC. Allice also runs perhaps the top women’s program in the country. The Women of Troy are the only team in the country to finish in the NCAA top three each of the last four years while winning at least one NCAA team title. Last year, his squad finished third at the NCAAs. It was led by the most celebrated sprinter in collegiate history, Angela Williams, who won an unprecedented fourth NCAA 100m title and later was awarded the Honda/Broderick Cup given to the nation’s top female collegiate athlete.
