PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: The very heart of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church is Christ present on the altar. Our mission, born at that altar, is to be sent forth into our neighborhood in order to build up the Kingdom of God. The labor of this effort must address in deed more than in word the needs of our people.

St. Matthew Parish has resumed public Masses. Our Guidelines follow the Archdiocesan protocol. Weekday Masses have returned to the Parish Office / Rectory. The Archbishop’s dispensation for attending Sunday Mass and Holy Days remains.

We enter up the handicap ramp between the Church and the Parish Office / Rectory. Our temperature is taken and masks must be worn. Then each person will be directed to a place to sit. Masks remain on throughout the service. There are no processions in the Church.

Directions are given for receiving communion and on how to exit the Church. The Parish Office / Rectory / Family Center are not open for meetings and social gatherings are prohibited. These Guidelines help us remain well in mind, body and spirit.

All are welcome to return using the established guidelines and protocols.

Urbi et Orbi Blessing 2021

Dear brothers and sisters,

On this festive day, I think in a special way of all those who refuse to let themselves be overcome by adversity, but instead work to bring hope, comfort, and help to those who suffer and those who are alone.

Jesus was born in a stable but was embraced by the love of the Virgin Mary and St. . By His birth in the flesh, the Son of God consecrated familial love. My thoughts at this moment turn to families: to those who cannot come together today and to those forced to remain at home. May Christmas be an opportunity for all of us to rediscover the family as a cradle of life and faith, a place of acceptance and love, dialogue, forgiveness, fraternal solidarity, and share joy, a source of peace for all humanity. Merry Christmas to everyone! Sunday, January 3, 2021

Feast of the Epiphany 20 + C + M + B + 21

After the birth of Jesus in , the was visited by the three Magi from the East. They came to worship Christ and brought for him gifts of , and .

The Feast of Epiphany is celebrated on the 12th Day of Christmas, January 6th. In the Western Church, the feast is placed on the Sunday between January 2-8.

Traditionally, families bless their homes on Epiphany. We recall the hospitality of Mary and Joseph to the Magi. The prayer asks for the protection of our homes and blessings upon all who enter.

We invite our families to bless their homes. With chalk, you may write on the door or the door frame the symbols 20+C+M+B+21.

The 20 21 marks the year we are entering. + reminds us of the cross on which our Savior died. C, M and B are the initials of the Magi: , Melchior and Balthasar. The Latin phrase: Christus Mansionem Benedicat, has been associated with it and means “Christ bless this house.” Writing on the door recalls the Passover of the Jews during the final plague. Prior to their Exodus, Jewish families used the blood from the lamb for their meal to mark and protect their homes and themselves.

Please join our Church in this prayer of Epiphany House Blessing from your home, with the sharing of gift, the blessing of one’s home and the protecting of everyone who enters it.

Epiphany Home Blessing

Begin with the sign of the cross. Read an Epiphany Scripture passage from any of the following:

Isaiah 60: 1-6; Psalm 72; Ephesians 3: 2-6; Matthew 2: 1-12; Revelation 21: 22-26

Pray: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Jesus Our Lord. Amen. (usccb.org) Chalk the door or door frame with: 20 + C + M + B + 21 Pray together the Our Father Sing your favorite Epiphany Song from any of the following:

We Three Kings; Come All Ye Faithful; Go, Tell it on the Mountain; etc.

End with the sign of the cross. Sunday, January 3, 2021
