New coach Kyle Smith yesterday took over Columbia University men’s basketball, which has dwelt mostly in the non-scholarship Ivy League’s middle-to-bottom ranks during the past four decades. A 40-year-old Houston native, Smith comes from St. Mary’s (Calif.), where he was an assistant coach and architect of the Gaels’ 16th- Kyle ranked offense.
