Old Testament Overview The Christian Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The word “testament” can also be translated as “covenant” or “relationship.” The Old Testament describes God’s covenant of law with the people of Israel. The New Testament describes God’s covenant of grace through Jesus Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we enter into a new relationship with God. Christians believe that ALL Scripture is “God-breathed.” God’s Word speaks to our lives, revealing God’s nature. The Lord desires to be in relationship with His people. By studying the Bible, we discover how to enter into right relationship with God. We also learn how Christians are called to live in God’s kingdom. The Old Testament is also called the Hebrew Bible. Jewish theologians use the Hebrew word “Tanakh.” The term describes the three divisions of the Old Testament: the Law (Torah), the Prophets (Nevi’im), and the Writings (Ketuvim). “Tanakh” is composed of the first letters of each section. The Law in Hebrew is “Torah” which literally means “teaching.” In the Greek language, it is known as the Pentateuch. It comprises the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. This section contains the stories of Creation, the patriarchs and matriarchs, the exodus from Egypt, and the giving of God’s Law, including the Ten Commandments. The Prophets cover Israel’s history from the time the Jews entered the Promised Land of Israel until the Babylonian captivity of Judah. -

The Doctrine of the Bible Hilo, Hawaii – June 2008 13 Part 4: Canonicity Canonicity refers to the character of a book that qualifies it for inclusion in the authoritative list of books comprising the Scriptures. Canon is derived from a Greek word meaning “rule” or “measurement” — a “straight rod” (see Ezekiel 42:16 for an example). Canon refers to the set of writings regarded as authentic and definitive for Scripture’s contents. Canonicity has the same basic meaning as the thought involved in talking about “the yardstick by which we determine what belongs in the Bible.” Determining the Canon of Scripture Nowhere in Scripture is there any suggestion that any standard outside of Scripture itself should be used to judge the canon. Deciding which books to include in the Bible should not be a human decision. No church or church council can create or validate the canon of Scripture — they merely give assent to it. The testimony of the Holy Spirit Himself is the only acceptable standard: . 1 Corinthians 2:4–11 – the Holy Spirit is the persuasive power behind the words of Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 – the Holy Spirit was the force behind the words of the apostles. Romans 8:15–16 – the Holy Spirit bears witness with (and to) our spirit with regard to the recognition of spiritual truth. Ephesians 2:20 – the testimony of the Spirit through His Word is superior to the testimony of the church because the church was established upon the foundation of the Word. GENERAL AIM: This unit aims to build on students’ knowledge of Biblcal Hebrew by imparting a working knowledge of biblical Aramaic, enabling them to read all the passages in the Old Testament where Aramaic is employed. The unit focuses on building a comprehensive vocabulary of biblical Aramaic, understanding its grammar and syntax, and applying this knowledge to the translation of the relevant texts in Daniel and Ezra. The purpose of this unit is not only to enable students to work from the original language in all parts of the Old Testament, but also to lay a linguistic foundation for any subsequent study involving Aramaic texts. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of this course students should be able to: • Recognise and distinguish biblical Aramaic from biblical Hebrew; • Translate all biblical Aramaic texts into good, accurate English; • Parse and reproduce regular forms of the biblical Aramaic verbal system; • Analyse and explain most grammatical and phrase-level syntactical constructions. Ezra & Nehemiah- Week of August 27 Day 1- Ezra 5-6 Pray that God would open your mind and heart to understand and be transformed by His Word. Read Ezra 5:1-6:12 two times. As you read, circle God’s name. Remember at the end of Ezra 4, because of the opposition the people were facing, the work on the house of the Lord stopped. Ezra 4 ends in despair and defeat—it seems that God and His people have lost. In Ezra 5, what do Zerubbabel and Jeshua do? Verse 1 makes a connection to 2 prophets of that time. What did Haggai and Zechariah prophesy? See Haggai 1:1,7-8 and Zechariah 1:1-3. The people of God meet some opposition again from Tattenai and Shethar-bozenai, two local leaders. This opposition does not seem to be as harsh, but they are questioned about what they are doing in Jerusalem in Ezra 5:3-4. This time the work on the temple does not stop. According to the passage, why does the work continue? (vs. 5) The questioners, Tattenai and Shethar-bozenai write a letter to King Daruis to inform him of what is going on. They tell him that they have questioned the people, and they tell him the people’s response. What was the people’s response to their questioning (Ezra 5:11-17)? King Darius receives this letter and launches an investigation of his own. What is his response (Ezra 6:6-12)? What significance in there in King Darius’s words, especially in Ezra 6:12? Why would Darius, a king who probably did not know God, respond this way (think back to King Cyrus in Chapter 1)? We noticed in Ezra 1 (and in Exodus 12:31) that God freed His people for a specific purpose. -

Qumran Hebrew (With a Trial Cut [1Qs])*
QUMRAN HEBREW (WITH A TRIAL CUT [1QS])* Gary A. Rendsburg Rutgers University One would think that after sixty years of studying the scrolls, scholars would have reached a consensus concerning the nature of the language of these texts. But such is not the case—the picture is no different for Qumran Hebrew (QH) than it is for identifying the sect of the Qum- ran community, for understanding the origins of the scroll depository in the caves, or for the classification of the archaeological remains at Qumran. At first glance, this is a bit difficult to comprehend, since in theory, at least, linguistic research should be the most objective form of scholarly inquiry, and the facts should speak for themselves—in contrast to, let’s say, the interpretation of texts, where subjectivity may be considered necessary at all times. But as we shall see, even though the data themselves are derived from purely empirical observation, the interpretation of the linguistic picture that emerges from the study of Qumran Hebrew has no less a range of options than the other subjects canvassed during this symposium. Before entering into such discussion, however, let us begin with the presentation of some basic facts. Of the 930 assorted documents from Qumran, 790, or about 85% of them are written in Hebrew (120 or about 13% are written in Aramaic, and 20 or about 2% are written in Greek). The Political Background of the Shiloh Oracle
THE POLITICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SHILOH ORACLE BY JOH. LINDBLOM Lund The famous passage in "the Blessing of Jacob" (Gen. xlix) about the sceptre that shall not depart from Judah "until he comes to Shiloh" (or "until Shiloh comes") belongs to the most discussed passages in the Old Testament. Dozens of explanations have been brought forward, but none of them has been able satisfactorily to dispel the obscureness that covers the extraordinarily ambiguous words. The space I have at my disposai in this volume does not aUow me to give a report of the various explanations. I presume that aU the scholars who are going to read trus artide are weU acquainted with them. 1) Without spenrung many introductory words, I shall go directly in medias res, presenting an attempt of my own to solve the problem connected with the curious Judah orade v. 10, wruch has vexed so many generations of biblical scholars. I venture to do that although I have slight hopes that the debate will thereby be settled. In the ancient Hebrew poetry the tribe poem is a dearly distinguish able species though there are very scanty remnants of it in the Bibie. The tribe poem aimed at celebrating or blaming, from various points of view, the different tribes belonging to the group of tribes wruch reckoned Jacob as their ancestor and, after the occupation of the promised land, were comprised under the name of "Israel". Of this Hterature we have only two rustinct examples in the Old Testament: "the Blessing of Jacob" and "the Blessing of Moses" (Deut.
