Notes for Emil R. Tuma Sr: Emil Tuma moved his family to a plantation in Louisiana. Once in a while the northern relatives would travel to his plantation for a summer vacation. The children of Edward M. Anderson and Marie Anna Biskup (this author's grandparents), Mary, Georgia, and Edward, Jr. would pick cotton on the plantation. His decendants live in that area to this day (2005). It is said that his sister, Georgia (Jirinia) would scold him because he maintained contact with the Communist Party in Czechoslovacia. She knew of him receiving a Communist Newspaper frequently, which he read diligently, and didn't like the idea of him maintaining "contact" with that party when they had moved to America to be free of the Communistic rules.

This author (Denver J. Weigel) is one of her grandsons and I'd like to share some of my thoughts of Grandma Anderson...

Every kid needed a grandma like ours. She always had good baked goods at the house. And was very happy to share them with us.

She was a hard worker, and at less than 5 feet tall was a dynamo. She could work other people under the rug!

She and grandpap cared for both of their mothers in their respective last years. Great-grandma Anderson first, and then great-grandma Biskup.

Grandma Anderson, I believe, obtained her baking expertise from her mother, great-grandma Biskup.

Grandma would do anything for you and had a heart of gold. In her later years, she traveled to Florida to be with Georgie and Rick (her daughter and son-in-law) during the winters and lived near Edward and Mae (her son and daughter-in-law) in the summer in a small mobile home. If you visited Grandma during the day, she ALWAYS had a pot of coffee brewing and either cookies or candy for her sweet-tooth.

She loved life and her family and never forgot to send you a birthday card with a dollar or a quarter in it. Something to let you know she loved you and had thought about you on your special day. And on Christmas, you could count on getting a new set of handkerchiefs.

Mary A. Biskup Anderson Generation 3 (con't) Mary A. Biskup Anderson, 86, of Zelienople, formerly of 277 Biskup Lane, Center Township, died Wednesday, January 27, 1982, in her home.

Born September 4, 1895, in Allegheny, PA, daughter of the Godfrey and Georgia Tuma Biskup, she was a lifelong resident of the Monaca area; a member of North Branch United Presbyterian Church, Center Township, and Big Knob Grange.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Anderson, Sr.

Surviving are a son, Edward M. Anderson, Jr., Center Township; two daughters, Mrs. George (Mary) Weigel, Zelienople, with whom she resided, and Mrs. Georgia E. Grogg, Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Biskup, Aliquippa, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the HARPER J. SIMPSON FUNERAL HOME, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, where a service will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. by her pastor, Rev. William Green.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Monaca.

Notes for Edward McCullough Anderson Sr.: When Edward Anderson was 12 years old, he was selected to carry the payroll on the train from Pittsburgh to the J&L (Jones & Laughlin) plant in Aliquippa.

This author (Denver J. Weigel) is a grandson of this individual. Some of the memories of my grandfather are noted below...

He was a craftsman. Toward the end of his life he was a skilled cabinet maker and made kitchen cabinets for my Mother and one of my Aunts during my growing up years of the 50's.

He was an inventor. We have the components of a device he invented as a communication device to the "ice man". In those early years (no electric refrigerators, but "Ice Boxes") it was necessary to let the ice man know if you wanted ice delivered as he drove through the streets. Grandpap's invention was an aluminum spring clip attached to a small, clear rubber, suction cup that was about 1-1/2" in diameter. On delivery day, you would attach the clip to the window of your home with the suction cup and then hang a diamond shaped aluminum sign (about 12" square) on the clip. One side of the square sign was painted "ICE" and the other side was painted "NO ICE". The sign was large enough so that as the driver traveled down the street he could see whether a customer needed ice that day without getting out of his horse drawn wagon (or later a truck) and go to the door. The clip that we have has the words "Pat. Pending" stamped on the aluminum. We don't believe Grandpap ever actually received a patent for this item.

He made his son Edward, and many of his grandchildren, electric train layouts. They were very elaborate with ponds with running water, a mountain with skiers traveling down the mountain, a water wheel that was fed by pumping the water from the pond, and many other items. He made replicas of the old J&L Steel yard buildings out of cardboard boxes and painted them black. We thought they looked like the real thing. He also built "blimps", to remind us of the Hindenberg, complete with flashing red tail light and hand carved engines on the sides.

In his later years, after we moved to the farm (1950), he and grandma would come out to visit most Sundays and we always talked about him and our Uncle Bob Potter because they both wore WHITE shirts, TIES, and HATS. It was just what men of that time did on a Sunday. It's the way they dressed.

As a grandfather, it seemed to us that he knew EVERYTHING. They were the first in the family to have a television and we would visit them on the weekend in the late 1940's (before we moved to the farm) and watch the Ed Sullivan show on their TV. It was quite an event.

He worked for numerous businesses in Monaca, PA including the Phoenix Glass plant, and the "Sanitarium".

Notes for Georgia Elizabeth Anderson: Georgie's funeral services were held at the Batchelor Brothers Funeral Home in Monaca, Pennsylvania Services were conducted by Reverend Marvin Barney at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2001.

Georgie had moved from Florida, back to Beaver County in 1998 and Edward purchased the home Ed Anderson, Sr. had built for himself and wife Mary. It was a cement block home sitting on a piece of ground up the hill from and located between the original home of Ed and Mary Anderson and Edward and Ada Mae Anderson. This home was rented by Georgie and she was extremely happy during these last years of her life. She wanted to be around family and she was...... It seems that Georgie never really got over her husband Rick's death and in her final years found that close to "family", rather than "friends", was where she wanted to be.

The thing I remember most was that Georgie, at age 81, was the baby sitter for her great-grand niece, Brooke Tomasko, Renea and Glenn's daughter. Renea is the daughter of Sandra Mae Anderson, daughter of Edward and Ada Mae Anderson, and niece to Georgie. Georgie loved her time with Brooke and Brooke loved going to Aunt Georgie's home. Two days prior to her death, Georgie was "sled riding" down the hill to Ed and Mae's house with Brooke..... and pulling the sled back up so they could do it again. Georgie couldn't have been happier than when she was with family during these last days.

Georgia Elizabeth Grogg, 81, of Monaca (Center Township), formerly of Palmetto, Florida, died unexpectedly Friday morning, January 5, 2001, in the Medical Center, Beaver.

Born June 4, 1919, in Monaca, she was a daughter of the late Edward M., Sr. and Mary Biskup Anderson. A homemaker, Mrs. Grogg was a member of the Palmetto Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Palmetto Chapter, both of Palmetto, Florida. She attended the North Branch United Presbyterian Church, Center Township.

Harry F. (Pap) Biskup, 69, of Biskup Lane, Center Township, died Monday evening, March 18, 1974, in the Rochester Unit of the Medical Center of Beaver County, following an extended illness.

Born June 7, 1904, in Monaca, son of the late Godfrey and Georgia Tuma Biskup, he was a lifelong resident of the Monaca area, a retired employee of the Rheem Manufacturing Co., Monaca, and the Center Township School District. He was former President of the Center Township ?School Board 18 years, a member of the Monaca-Center Lodge 791, F&AM, the New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine, Pittsburgh, Beaver Valley Caravan No. 18, Fathers Council of the American Legion Post 580. Monaca FOE Lodge No. 1412, and the American Federation of Musicians of U.S. and Canada.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Karlberg Biskup, November 1964, a daughter, Eleanor, in 1948, and a brother, Andrew, in 1964.

Frank Biskup, 90, a lifelong resident of Center Township, passed away Wednesday evening, April 3, 2002, in The Medical Center, Beaver.

Born January 21, 1912, at the family homestead on Biskup Lane, he was a son of the late Godfrey and Georgia (Tuma) Biskup. Mr. Biskup retired as a supervisor from the Former St. Joe Mineral Corp. in Potter Township with 42 years of service. He was a member of the North Branch United Presbyterian Church, Center Township, and was an avid musician who loved to play the banjo. Frank was a warrant member of the Monaca-Center F&AM Lodge 791 and was a member of the New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh, and Beaver Valley Caravan 18. He was also a member of the Center Township VFW 1821 and Midland Legion Club.

He leaves his wife of 67 years. Irene (Smallwood) Biskup; two sons and their spouses, Ronald Biskup and his wife, Carol, Bel Air, MD., and Dennis Biskup and his wife, Patty, Center Township; four grandchildren, Rhonda and Ronald Biskup, Jr., both in Maryland, and twins, Mark and Michael Biskup and Michael's wife, Belicia, all in Ohio and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Andy and Harry Sr. Biskup, and a sister, Mary Anderson.

Katherine R . Sochor, 98, a lifelong resident of Center Township passed away, December 24, 2015 at Good Samaritan Hospice at Heritage Valley, Beaver.

Born December 5, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Anna R. (Kugle) Biskup.

Mrs. Sochor was a retiree of Center Area Schools, a longtime member of the Center Twp. VFW Post #1821 and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.

She leaves three children: Andrew Sochor, Janet Berarducci and Thomas (Joyce) Sochor.

Eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

John B. ‘Bronk’ Sochor, 95, a lifelong resident of Center Twp., passed away peacefully on Monday, April 30, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was a son of the late Broanislav M. and Suzanne (Majzlik) Sochor.

Wanting a place for his children to play baseball, Mr. Sochor was responsible for the construction of the two original baseball fields near the municipal building in Center Twp. He was currently a member of the Rochester Lodge No. 229 F&AM and a former member of the Center Twp. VFW Post 1821. He enjoyed bowling and was a former tournament horseshoe pitcher.

Mr. Sochor leaves his wife, Thelma (Tomajko) Sochor; his former wife, Katherine Sochor; his children, Andy Sochor and his wife, Gloria, of Center Twp., Janet Berarducci and her husband, Wilbert, of Rochester and Thomas Sochor and his wife, Joyce, of Center Twp.; proud grandfather of Brian, Precious, Wilbert Jr., Shane, April, Jacki, Carly and Tom ‘Hoss’, and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary and Lydia, and two brothers, Fred and Tom.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sochor was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley; a brother, Ben, and four sisters, Ida, Martha, Gert and Zelma.

Andrew Stewart (Stew) Biskup, 61, of 239 Biskup Lane, Center Township, died Thursday, April 8, 1982, in his home, following an extended illness.

Born July 12, 1920, in Center Township, son of the late Andrew John and Anna Kugel Biskup Ramer, he had been a lifelong resident of Center Township; was employed as an engineer for the Aliquippa & Southern Railroad, Aliquippa, where he had worked for the past 30 years, and was a veteran of World War Generation 4 (con't) Southern Railroad, Aliquippa, where he had worked for the past 30 years, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, in Germany.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Center Township; Center Township VFW, Post 1821; Monaca American Legion, Post 580; the 36th Infantry Division Association of Texas, and the Brotherhood of Locomotives & Engineers. He also belonged to Monaca Center Lodge No. 791, F&AM; the New Castle Consistory; the Syria Shrine, Pittsburgh, and the Beaver County Caravan, No. 18.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Johnston Biskup; a son David Stewart Biskup, Monaca; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Whippo, Georgetown, and Mrs. Rodger (Nancy) Mineard, Monaca; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Sochor, Monaca and Mrs. Clifford (Mary) Cox, East Palestine, Ohio.

Helen Mae (Johnston) Biskup, 90, of Center Township, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, August 28, 2012, at West Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Moon Township.

Born October 21, 1921, in Rochester, she was a daughter of the late David Sr. and Hazel (Hill) Johnston. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Stewart Biskup, who preceded her in death on April 8, 1982.

A devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church, Center Township, Helen was a member of the church council, a pastor’s assistant and served Communion to shut-ins. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter 55 and served as a Worthy High Priestess of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, New Castle. She was always willing to volunteer her time and talents to organizations including Girl Scouts, where she served for 35 years; Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Center Township, and Center Area School District PTA. Helen enjoyed baking, camping, working crossword puzzles and more recently playing bingo and watching golf on TV. Spending time with her family was what she cherished most.

She leaves to mourn her loss a son, David S. Biskup and his wife, Patty, and two daughters, Shirley Whippo and her husband, Bob, and Nancy Mineard and her husband, Rodger, all of Center Township; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Keefer and her husband, Frank, and a sister-in-law, Kathryn Sochor.

In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by a grandson, Douglas Adams; a great-grandson, Randy Adams; a sister, Mary Kosto, and two brothers, Russell Johnston and David Johnston, Jr.

He began his teaching career in Clairton, PA in 1942 as an automotive mechanic instructor. After a one year stay in Clairton, he moved to a position with Aliquippa School District where he stayed for 20 years. During his tenure in Aliquippa, Mr. Brobeck taught vocational subjects and served as administrative assistant to the superintendent.

When the Big Beaver Jointure was formed he was selected as supervisory principal. The jointure merged with Beaver Falls schools seven years later and Mr. Brobeck became assistant superintendent. In 1975 he was promoted to superintendent.

Stanley retired from the teaching field December 31, 1979 after 37 years as an educator.

Mr. Brobeck, during his residence in Center Township, served as tax collector.

On Sunday, April 25, 2010 Carl H. "Tuck" Biskup, 86, of Center Township, the well known owner and operator of Biskup Plumbing and Heating, passed peacefully into life eternal surrounded by his loving family.

He was the devoted husband of Keath McMullen Biskup who entered life eternal on October 19, 2005. They were married on March 12, 1947 , and celebrated 58 years of marriage together. They had four children, Carl L. (wife Debbie), Center Township; John M. (wife Cindy) of Hopewell Township; Laurie Davenport of Locust Grove , OK, and the late Jeffrey W. (Sandra) of Beaver. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grand children.

Carl was a 1942 graduate of Monaca High School. He entered the United States Army Air Corps and served his country in Italy and Africa during World War II as a Technical Sergeant for the 326th AAF Base Unit. Carl was a member of North Branch Presbyterian Church, Monaca-Center Lodge #791, F&AM, New Castle Consistory and Pittsburgh Syria Shrine, Monaca American Legion, Center Township VFW where he was a past Commander, Rochester Owls, and PNA Alliance, Monaca.

Beside his wife and son, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Harry and a sister, Eleanor Biskup.

The void she leaves will be felt by her four children, Kenneth Biskup and his wife, Jan, Connie Patton and her husband, Terry, all of Center Township, James "Dink" Biskup and his wife, Kim, Aliquippa, and Rodney Biskup and his wife, Sue, Center Township. Alice leaves her cherished twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived, by two brothers, Howard (Virginia) Knopp, Jr., California, and Ed (Elaine) Knopp, Center Township.

A 26-year-old Center Township man was killed early Saturday morning when his truck crossed over a medial strip into the path of oncoming traffic.

Deputy coroner Dr. Thomas Todd, identified the man as Timothy R. Biskup. Biskup was driving his 1970 International truck south on Constitution Boulevard near the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge when it crossed the highway and landed on top of a 1970 Camaro driven by John D. Hovan, 25, Maplewood Avenue, Ambridge, Todd said.

Biskup was thrown from his truck and struck by a car driven by Mark Ross, 21, of McMinn street, Aliquippa. Ross was in the process of passing Hovan's car. All three vehicles were heavily damaged.

Hovan is listed in stable condition at Aliquippa Hospital with cuts to the face and legs. Ross was treated for a minor head injury.

Todd, who pronounced Biskup dead at the scene, said he was unsure if Biskup's death resulted from the initial collision or from being struck by the car. An autopsy was to be performed Saturday at the Medical Center of Beaver County.

The son of Alice Knopp Biskup of Monaca and the Late Harry Biskup, Jr., Biskup was a lifelong resident of Center Township and was an employee of St. Joe Minerals, Potter Township. He attended the Monaca United Methodist Church.

E. Jane Biskup, 86, formerly of Center Township, died Monday, June 15, 2015, at Kingston Residence Assisted Living, North Carolina, surrounded by her family. She was born December 8, 1928, and was a daughter of the late Wilmer and Mildred Davis Shaffer. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Biskup, in 1982, and sisters, Hazel (Jack) Moffett and Janet Hahn.

Jane was a graduate of Slippery Rock College and was a physical education teacher at Monaca School District and Beaver Falls School District for a short time. She enlisted in the Army and trained at Walter Reed Hospital to become a physical therapist. She also attained the rank of Captain. Following discharge from the Army, she was the Director of the Physical Therapy Department at Rochester Hospital and later Easter Seals Society and Conway Hospital, SC. She semi-retired from physical therapy and worked at the Myrtle Beach Brace & Limb. Even though she was retired, she never stopped being a physical therapist; she recently was instructing a resident how to use her walker. Jane and George were avid golfers and frequented Myrtle Beach with their many friends. She was always very proud of her championship win at the former Crucible Management Club. Jane was a past Worthy Matron of Naomi Chapter #55 Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Bennett Worked for California Paramedical and Technical College in Long Beach, CA for 11-1/2 years before she retired in 2000.

In her yourh she was involved with 4-H. She was a graduate of Monaca High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bennett, Jr., and a sister, Charlotte.

Surviving are two sons. Douglas, San Jacinto, CA and Michael, in Nevada; two grandchildren, and a brother, Bill Biskup, in Florida.

Services were held at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside, CA.

Burial was private and internment was at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA.

Gloria J. Sochor, 74, of Center Twp., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, November 26, 2013, at her home.

Born October 9, 1939, in Portage (Cambria Co.), PA, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Beverly (Fleck) Bendzak. When Gloria was 12 years old, her family relocated to Aliquippa and in 1958, she graduated from Aliquippa High School.

She and Andrew John Sochor (who survives) were united in marriage on July 17, 1965. They were blessed with two sons, Brian, currently living in Virginia, and Bradley, who passed away on May 12, 2002. Gloria had an infant brother who died at six months of age.

Gloria had worked the majority of her life, with employment with K-Mart, Kings Restaurant and lastly, Wal-Mart. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Center Twp., and enjoyed crafts.

A private family viewing was held Wednesday with private entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

David S. Biskup, 74 of Center Twp., passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015, after a brave, courageous battle with cancer.

Dave was a proud veteran of the United States Navy where he was stationed on the USS Sam Rayburn submarine. Jeffrey W. Biskup, 45, of Brighton township, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 22, 2002, in The Medical Center, Beaver, {Pennsylvania}

Born November 25, 1956, in Rochester, {PA} a son of Carl "Tuck" and Keath McMullen Biskup, Center Township, he was a member of the North Branch United Presbyterian Church, Center Township. He was a self-employed engineer and had worked with Westinghouse the past 15 years. A 1975 graduate of Center High School, {Center Township, Beaver County, PA} he was a graduate of Point Park College and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps having served at Paris Island. Jeffrey enjoyed traveling, and his hobby was to restore old homes.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Sandra A. Bosnak Biskup; a daughter, Julie A. Biskup, at home; two stepsons, Bryan Herbuth, Monaca, {PA} and Carl Herbuth, Baden {Beaver County, PA}; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John "Jack" and Cindy Biskup, Hopewell Township {Beaver County, PA}, and Carl Lee and Debbie Biskup, Center Township {Beaver County, PA}; a sister and brother-in-law, Laurie and Toby Davenport, Locust Grove, Oklahoma; a brother-in-law, Robert Bosnak, Baden {Beaver County, PA}, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME, 333 Third Street, Beaver. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 A.M. in the North Branch United Presbyterian Church. In the absence of his pastor, the Rev. Dennis D. Burnett will officiate.

Interment will follow in Beaver Cemetery.

Douglas "Doug" Brown, 40, of Hanover Township, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. He was born March 9, 1967, in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of the late Jack Brown and Charlene (Shipek) Bennett. Doug was employed by Liberty Pittsburgh Systems in their shipping department. In his leisure, Doug enjoyed fishing.

He was a faithful member of the Christian Assembly, Industry, where he served as a member of the media Generation 6 (con't) He was a faithful member of the Christian Assembly, Industry, where he served as a member of the media ministry team. Doug truly enjoyed the Christian life and lived his life with a consistent walk of faith and trust. He immersed himself in The Scripture; and memorized countless Bible verses from where he would draw strength and comfort during his courageous battle with cancer.

In addition to his mother, Doug is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca "Becky" (Anderson) Brown; his son, Abraham "Abe" Douglas Brown; two daughters, Brianna and Victoria Brown; two brothers, Richard and Thomas; his mother and father-in-law who he loved and respected as parents, Edward and Christel Anderson, Georgetown; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jason, Christel, Rachel, Joshua and Kate, and his "trustworthy and faithful" friend, Mark Johnson.

Friends will be received Friday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 P.M. at the Christian Assembly, 6241 Tuscarawas Road, Industry (Ohioville), where a service will be held at 7 P.M. immediately following the visitation. His pastor, William Anzevino, will officiate.
