Founded in 1873 and located on 160 acres in the heart of Ottawa, Ontario, Beechwood is a community cemetery that is also the National Cemetery of Canada, the National Military Cemetery, the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery and the Ottawa Police Service Memorial Cemetery. BCC is owned by The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation (“BCF”), a not-for-profit corporation and a registered charity under the Income Tax Act. This ensures any profits generated by the bereavement services business are reinvested in continuing improvements of assets and services. A one-of-a-kind organization, Beechwood provides a year-round venue for people to gather for celebrations of life and seasons, commemorations, and historical and unique cultural events. As a National Historic Site, its beautiful gardens are a destination for visitors to Ottawa and residents alike. The website is located at www.beechwoodottawa.ca. The Position The President of BCC and Executive Director of BCF are concurrent positions reporting to, and working closely with, the volunteer Boards of Directors of each corporation. This includes the development and implementation of annual business and strategic plans and policies consistent with Beechwood’s Mission, Vision and Values. Due to a planned retirement, we seek a person possessing leadership skills to carry out the Beechwood mission, maintain the positive workplace culture, and provide exemplary client service to its varied customers and communities. As the “face and voice” of Beechwood, he or she will interact with customers and the public at large, as well as with politicians and government ministries and agencies at all levels, a variety of key stakeholders and culturally diverse, multi-faith and historical groups. Operationally, the President and Executive Director, supported by an experienced management team, will oversee day-to-day personnel to deliver Beechwood’s quality bereavement services and a variety of community outreach programs. Candidates We seek an effective, imaginative business leader, able to communicate in English and French, possessing: • a level of empathy in line with the nature of bereavement services at Beechwood; • relevant experience/knowledge acquired in the bereavement sector or a related environment; • a sound appreciation of “for profit”/“not-for-profit” business models; • proven leadership, management and strategic skills encompassing a focus on results; an ability to inspire and to build loyalty and trust; sales and client service; capital planning/investment management; and an understanding of technology/implementation; and, • a planning/operations background, with work experience and demonstrated achievement of goals in a regulated industry.
