It is the day in 1919 when the first American Legion caucus, held by members of the American Expeditionary Force, convened in Paris. Much as the birthday of the United States is celebrated on July 4 – for the day in 1776 when rebelling patriots declared the independence of the British colonies and the spirit of America was born – March 15 is the day on which the Legion came to life. Each year, Legion posts across the country hold events – public, private or both – to commemorate this anniversary. At the National Headquarters of The American Legion there also is an event conducted annually to observe the Legion birthday, and on a worldwide scale. Members of The American Legion Amateur Radio Club (TALARC) will operate a special event station to commemorate the Legion’s 98th birthday. Operating from the radio room at National Headquarters in Indianapolis, ham radio operators at club station K9TAL will celebrate the Legion’s 98 years of service to America’s veterans with both members and non-member amateur radio operators around the world on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Ham radio operators wishing to contact Special Event Station K9TAL should tune to 40 meters: 7.225 MHz (+/- 5 KHz) LSB; or to 2 meters: K9DC 147.315 Repeater at Indianapolis; or IRLP Node 9735; or, to EchoLink *CROSSRDS* Conference node. All operations will be conducted on Saturday, March 11 between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time [1800Z to 2359Z]. All amateur radio operators are invited to check in. American Legion posts with TALARC stations are encouraged to check in from around the country. A full-color certificate and QSL card will be sent to all amateur radio operators contacting K9TAL, and to shortwave listeners providing signal reports, upon receipt of a 9-by-12-inch self-addressed stamped envelope to: 1 of 3 http://editor.legionemail.com/vo/?FileID=dc603eb6-ebdd-4a95-bc4f-6c9... View as a Web page ABOUT TALARC | JOIN TALARC | HAM RADIO EVENTS | LEGIONTOWN | CONTACT US IRLP net returns April 12 Dear TALARC Members and Friends, In December 2016 the monthly IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project) net was suspended due to a lack of wide-scale participation. Since then the TALARC Board has looked at options and made a determination for return of the net with a change that is expected to be more accommodating, and thereby increase participation. Beginning in April the IRLP net will operate on the second Wednesday of the month, mid-week and in the evening. The return of the net is set for Wednesday, April 12, 9 PM EDT, on IRLP Node 9735. The re-instatement of this net comes with a nice enhancement. That is, the 9735 IRLP node is bridged to the *CROSSRDS* EchoLink conference node. This allows the two different modes of communication – IRLP and EchoLink – to operate as one net. As such, those calling in to the Wednesday night net via the *CROSSRDS* EchoLink conference node will hear those calling in on IRLP node 9735, and vice versa. NOTE: Adding of the *CROSSRDS* EchoLink conference to IRLP operations is just that, an addition. It is not a replacement for the *FMCA-ARC* EchoLink conference net that operates on the second Saturday of the month at noon Eastern. To those who are limited by their equipment or by HOAs that restrict antenna arrays, IRLP is a means to reach out, virtually around the world, to other ham radio operators. An inexpensive VHF rig and close proximity to an IRLP repeater is pretty much all you need to access IRLP. It was this thought – ease of access – that moved the TALARC Board to establish this net when the club was formed. Information about IRLP is at: www.irlp.net. For those who may be even more restricted by their equipment or by residential rules, EchoLink is a good alternative in amateur radio communications. The equipment required for Echo Link is simple: a PC, or a tablet, or a smart phone; any of the three can work. EchoLink software is free and can be downloaded to most platforms that include iOS and Android software. Information about EchoLink is at: http://www.echolink.org/. 1 of 3 http://editor.legionemail.com/vo/?FileID=11dddc3b-8c72-472b-b96e-15... View as a Web page ABOUT TALARC | JOIN TALARC | HAM RADIO EVENTS | LEGIONTOWN | CONTACT US TALARC member interest and participation continues to grow Dear TALARC Members and Friends, Last month this newsletter drew attention to interest in, or start-up of, Legion post-affiliated radio clubs. Five or six new ones were mentioned, some of which are yet in the formative stages, while others are functioning as a group complete with gear and a club call sign. This recent activity is encouraging, and it's obvious because it has generated inquiry to the Legion's National Headquarters from those still holding the idea of post affiliation and looking for help to make it happen. The previous paragraph addresses member interest, as noted in the headline. And to the second point, participation, we are pleased to note the following. Within the last month three new TALARC nets have been established. One is an IRLP/EchoLink combined net; another is the addition of a second D-Star net; and the third is the addition of an 80-meter net that will operate weekly. The D-Star addition is compliments of Mark W2UIS, who has anchored the D-Star net for some time. Running the existing evening net at 9 p.m. Eastern, and wanting to accommodate folks on both coasts and everywhere in between, Mark recently added a midnight [Eastern] D-Star net on the first Monday of each month. This done to give convenient and timely access to the net, particularly, for those west of the Mississippi. And speaking of Mississippi, our hats are off to Don KA5DON, and the members of the Gautier American Legion Post 1992 Jim Leist Memorial Amateur Radio Club, call sign K5TAL, for taking the reins on a weekly 80-meter net. Don, who is trustee for the club, tells us that K5TAL hosts a net every Wednesday on or near 3.862 MHz at 7 p.m. Central, which is 12 a.m. UTC [0000 Hours]. TALARC members from Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas, "and anywhere else," says Don, are welcome and encouraged to join in the net. It is also open to all ham operators, regardless of veteran status or affiliation. Now, for those needing help with garnering support from your post leadership for a post-affiliated club, know that National Headquarters can provide that, and in several ways. First is by direct contact with Bill NZ9S, trustee for K9TAL 1 of 4 http://editor.legionemail.com/vo/?FileID=7be179b8-8d4a-4006-8af9-3e..
