2018 Fixtures TICHBORNE PARK CRICKET CLUB 2018 FIXTURES Hampshire Cricket League Southern Premier League Winchester & District CCA TICHBORNE PARK CRICKET CLUB 2018 FIXTURES CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS Well here we are again, the start of another cricket season! While the 2017 senior playing side of things didn’t go too well, with both the 1sts and 2nds losing their place in their respective leagues and the ladies team withdrawing from their league, as always there was still many positives for the club. Not least the successful integration of several colts into the 3rd XI Saturday senior side, winning the Tichborne Trophy, the inaugural Vic Primmer sixes tournament, our new website and the launch of ECB All Stars initiative, which saw an influx of young people giving cricket a try for the first time. I say it all the time but not bad for a small village club, competing with towns the size of Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Basingstoke. The 2017 season ended with sadness when we learned of the sudden death of our President Anthony Loudon. A big challenge facing us this year is finding a new President to fill Anthony’s shoes. We look forward to remembering Anthony with his friends and family when we host the Presidents XI fixture in July. There is a lot of hard work ahead for the committee with Club Mark reaccreditation; an updated Club Development Plan; implementation of our media strategy to promote the club and attract new members and of course to push forward with fundraising and grant applications for the pavilion project. Continued on page 2 TICHBORNE PARK CRICKET CLUB 1 We were successful in receiving grant funding towards a new mower from Winchester City Council recently which is so desperately needed. We also received a small grants fund from the ECB for a new BBQ and hand dryers for the new pavilion. Thanks to Andy and Mike for their help with obtaining these. We welcome Australian Ryan Brooks back to the park this Summer, Ryan played for our seconds last year and will make his Southern Premier League debut in May. We hope you have a great season Ryan. We are running the All Stars programme again this summer and for the first time in a few years we have age groups competing in leagues at under 9, 11, 13 and 15. My thanks to Pete, Nick, Tom and every one of you who supports the training sessions, I know you give up your time and do an amazing job for our young people. As you can see there is a lot going on and there is a very small committee of people working to do it all. Please do what you can to lend a hand over the coming months, whether it is by helping Martin with the ground, doing a shift behind the bar, helping to arrange a social event or supporting junior coaching. At the very least, please support our fundraising efforts by turning up to events that are put on. If they are not your cup of tea, get in touch with Lucia and suggest something that you think would work. Finally, I wish you all a great season whether you play, umpire, score or support. We have much to be proud of and a beautiful place to enjoy, let’s make 2018 Tichborne Parks best year yet! Lisa Allam Chairperson Tichborne Park Cricket Club wishes to thank all advertisers who have sponsored this fixture booklet and respectfully ask our members to support them where possible. 2 TICHBORNE PARK CRICKET CLUB OFFICERS - 2018 LIFE VICE-PRESIDENTS G. Whereas parks were relatively small and enclosed by a park The medieval bishops of Winchester held the richest see in pale, chases were large, unfenced hunting England which, by the thirteenth century, comprised over fifty grounds which were typically the preserve of manors and boroughs scattered across six southern counties lay magnates or great ecclesiastics. In Hamp- (Swift 1930, ix,126; Moorman 1945, 169; Titow 1972, shire the bishop held chases at Hambledon, 38). The abundant income from his possessions allowed the Bishop's Waltham, Highclere and Crondall bishop to live on an aristocratic scale, enjoying luxuries (Cantor 1982, 56; Shore 1908-11, 261-7; appropriate to the highest nobility. Notable among these Deedes 1924, 717; Thompson 1975, 26). He luxuries were the bishop's deer parks, providing venison for also enjoyed the right of free warren, which great episcopal feasts and sport for royal and noble huntsmen. usually entitled a lord or his servants to hunt More deer parks belonged to Winchester than to any other see in the country. Indeed, only the Duchy of Lancaster and the small game over an entire manor, but it is clear Crown held more (Cantor et al 1979, 78). that the bishop's men were accustomed to The development and management of these parks were hunt deer in his free warrens.
