Members and staff at a Northumberland club have raised more than £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support for the second year running. Newsham Victory Club Steward Mick Storey, suggested the idea last year and although the club had never run a charity event before it was adopted enthusiastically with events including a 10-mile run, a family walk, buckets on the bar and a family fun day. A couple of men dressed in women’s lingerie even walked for miles and miles round Blyth with Macmillian buckets stopping at local clubs and pubs to help the club raise £5,000. “The whole community pulled together to show their support for Macmillian,” said Mick. “A lot of our members were facing cancer themselves or had someone they loved dearly dealing with it while some people gave it their all just because it is one of the most amazing inspiring charities going.” This year the club has gathered up friends, family staff, members and even strangers to participate and raised even more — £5,500. This year has yet again seen meteoric energy price rises bringing misery and hardship to clubs and their members — but the misery doesn’t end there as British Gas and the other members of the Big Avoid half measures. Six energy suppliers have warned that wholesale prices will rise even further. If your club is to survive then reducing what is usually the second largest overhead is an absolute must. For many clubs the majority of the energy costs are focused on the heating and in the cellar. Both of these are often areas where the energy usage can be dramatically reduced with the help of the Union’s recommended energy adviser Smart Energy, which has evolved from the foundations laid by Envtec Services to bring energy-saving opportunities to clubs. Smart Energy is geared solely towards clubs allowing Envtec Services to focus on its core activity of being a service provider. CJ November 2013.indd 11 23/10/2013 13:19 CANDIDATES LINE UP FOR ELECTION

This year’s election sees the National Executive reduced from 15 to 13 as two places have been lost in Yorkshire. The combined Doncaster/Leeds/Wakefield/York City electoral district now has less than 200 clubs so only elects one member as does the Heavy Woollen/South Yorkshire/West Yorkshire constituency. Two current members of the National Executive, Gordon Winn and Roger Oake retire at the end of the year and at least one more will leave the Executive as South Yorkshire Branch Secretary Ken Green faces Heavy Woollen Branch Secretary Colin Howroyd. Also standing in the West Yorkshire, Heavy Woollen and South Yorkshire seat are former National Executive member Philip Larkin, Howard Sharpe from Thornhill Briggs WMC in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Branch Executive member Dave Stenton. Roger Oake’s place will be taken by South East Met Branch Executive member Chris O’Neill, who is unopposed. Possibly the most interesting vote will be in County Durham and Cleveland where eight candidates are contesting two seats. Sitting members Colin Armstrong and David Walton are opposed by: Cleveland Branch Secretary Arthur Souter, Durham Branch Executive member George Smith from Billingham Trade Union Social Club; Stephen Foster from Easington Colliery Club; Dennis Long, from Stanley Central Club; Eric Wilkinson from North Biddick Social Club, Washington, and Christopher Wright from Sunderland National Reserve Club. Other contests see Leicestershire’s John Harris defend his seat against Derbyshire Branch Secretary John Batchelor; Doncaster Branch Secretary Dave Gravel stand against Leeds Branch Secretary Martin Smith in a straight two-way fight and, in the South West, Western Counties Branch Secretary Mark Brewer faces Wessex Branch President Bob Russell, who defeated him by six votes last time. A full list of candidates is on this page. Ballot papers will be issued on November 5 and must be returned to Head Office by December 3. The results will be printed in the January issue of Club Journal. • Wakefield Branch Secretary Gordon Winn (right) is leaving he held one of the two seats in the new Leeds, York City, Wakefield the National Executive next and Doncaster constituency. month after 22 years. Peter Miller The Union is sad to announce the death of our former Recreation Secretary Peter Miller at the age of 76. Peter was a familiar figure to club members as he organised the country’s biggest games programme for 24 years and attended matches at clubs up and down the country; he also acted as compere for many years of the annual Queen of Clubs competition at Blackpool. In retirement he continued to work at the annual conference and the Coventry Games League among others still invited him to their annual presentation nights. Peter joined the Union in 1958 when Head Office was based in Clerkenwell and after three years in accounts joined the Education & Recreation Department. When the two Departments were split in 1977 he became Recreation Secretary and held the post until ill health caused him to take early retirement in 2001 after 43 years with the Union, an event Club Journal described as “the end of an era.” Former General Secretary Kevin Smyth said: “I was saddened to learn of Peter’s death as I had worked with him and known him as a friend Peter Miller displays a certificate from Head Office staff and the NEC for 37 years. He still organised the counting of the votes at the Annual presented to him by National President Derek Dormer and General Conference and did the draw for the Union’s Greyhound evening this Secretary Kevin Smyth on his retirement in 2001. Our condolences go to his widow Doreen. Geoff Hendle It is with deep regret that the Langham Club in North London announce the death of former North East Metropolitan Branch Executive member George Hendle. George had reached the age of 90 and up until recently was still a regular face at the Langham Club and the Enfield Highway Club. He was also still an active supporter of his beloved Spurs. He will be sadly missed by his family and many CIU friends. Bob Morris Darlington Club & Institute are sad to announce the death of their Vice-President Bob Morris at the age of 64. He will be greatly missed by all at the Elland WMC.

CJ November 2013.indd 17 23/10/2013 13:19 Busy time for Durham clubs

Last month we featured Northumberland’s leek shows and this time it’s the turn of County Durham. At the Tanfield Lea Show Harry Lake won the trophies for Best Leek, Best Blanch, Best Intermediate and Overall Show Winner and he is pictured holding them with Club Chairman Bill Pearson and National Executive member Colin Armstrong. Also pictured (top right) with Colin Armstrong and Bill Pearson are Mel Smith, winner of the Best Mixed Veg section and (below) runner-up Thomas Hall. Pictured at Rookhope WMC’s 43rd annual leek show are National Executive member David Walton, champion Neil Stobbart and Club Secretary Kevin Roddam. Rookhope is more than 1,000ft above sea level in the North Pennines and is also on the Coast-to-Coast cycle route. Rookhope WMC is one of our smallest clubs with only 112 members and is staffed voluntarily by the Committee. Money raised from sale of produce went to the village hall fund. Colin Armstrong and David Walton have also been kept busy with sports presentations. Both pairs in the final of the Durham Pool Championship were from Grove and Moorside Club so the final was played there. They did the club proud as Phil Marshall and Colin Pilcher were taken right to the wire by Alan Hogarth and Kai Dixon in the best-of-seven match. Marshall and Pilcher, who have two entries in the Guinness Book of Records for playing marathons, took the opening frame, but Alan Hogarth immediately equalised with a complete clearance. The third saw Marshall clear up only to see Dixon produce a great clearance to level at two frames each. The fifth frame went to Marshall with another good clearance, and in the next frame he missed the black and Hogarth stepped up with a classy clearance to take the match to the decider. In the final frame, Pictured (left to right): are referee Simon Baker, Phil Marshall and however, Pilcher produced a nail biting clearance to take the title. Colin Pilcher, National Executive member Colin Armstrong, Alan Hogarth and Kai Dixon, and Branch Executive member John Corrigan.

The Kent Branch Golf Pairs Tournament was held at Upchurch River Valley Golf Club and both the winners and runners-up were from David Walton is also pictured with the winners of the Branch Bowls Walderslade WMC. Pictured (left to right) are runners-up T. Turner Triples from Leadgate WMC. Left to right: Stan Montgomery, Garry and S. Fowle; and winners T Marrel and R Smith. Robson and Derek Metcalfe.
