  • Today's News Clips June 21, 2017
Today’s News Clips June 21, 2017 Chicago Tribune What Marian Hossa's announcement means for Blackhawks' salary cap Chris Hine June 21, 2017 Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa is facing a serious health issue and will not play in the 2017-18 season because of what he called a "progressive skin disorder" and the severe side effects associated with the disease's medication. Hossa's announcement means the Blackhawks will be missing one of their top players from last season (26 goals, 19 assists), a Hall-of-Fame caliber player who had a rebound season at 38. It will also have major implications on the complicated salary-cap situation for the Hawks — and it may end up providing them with some cap relief, although they'd rather have a healthy Hossa playing for them. Hossa signed a 12-year, $63.3 million deal with the Hawks before the 2009-10 season. Most of the money in the contract was frontloaded and Hossa stands to make just $1 million in each of the final four seasons even though he carries a cap hit of $5.275 million. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, which was signed before the 2013 season, the league would punish such long-term contracts if the player were to retire before the contract expires. Teams can face harsh salary-cap recapture penalties if a player retires before the end of a long-term deal. This is why Hossa saying he will just miss next season — and not formally retiring — is so important to the cap situation. The Hawks are likely to place Hossa on long-term injured reserve and could get relief on the $75 million cap from his absence.

  • {PDF EPUB} Shorthanded the Untold Story of the Seals Hockey's Most Colorful Team by Brad Kurtzberg Charlie Burns
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Shorthanded The Untold Story of the Seals Hockey's Most Colorful Team by Brad Kurtzberg Charlie Burns. Charles Frederick Burns (born February 14, 1936) is a retired American-born Canadian professional ice hockey forward who played 749 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Minnesota North Stars. Burns was mainly known for being an excellent skater, playmaker and defensive player who performed checking and penalty-killing. His trademark was the heavily padded helmet that he was forced to wear after suffering a serious head injury while playing junior hockey in 1954–55. In 1959, he was the only US-born player in the NHL. Although Burns was born in Detroit, Michigan, his family moved to Toronto, Ontario when he was a child. [1] Burns chose Canadian citizenship when he turned 21 [2] and later played for the 1958 World Champion Whitby Dunlops. Burns had three spells as a player-coach, twice with the San Francisco Seals (1965-66 & 1966-67) and one with the Minnesota North Stars (1969–70). He coached the Stars again in 1974-75 after his retirement. Curiously, all of these were midseason assignments. He currently coaches youth hockey for the Wonderland Wizards of Bridgeport, Connecticut in his spare time. [3] Maruk. If you have information about this name , share it in the comments area below! • TWO DECADES LATER, SEALS BOOSTERS KEEP the FAITH by Scott Surgent
TWO DECADES LATER, SEALS BOOSTERS KEEP THE FAITH by Scott Surgent Every couple of months in the San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 65 hock - ey fans get together to enjoy each other’s company, put up their feet, and talk hock - ey. The Sharks of San Jose are a hot topic these days, and the San Francisco Spiders of the IHL drew some interest during 1995-96, but invariably, the talk returns to their first love — the late, great California Golden Seals. The who? Older fans might vaguely recall there was once a National Hockey League fran - chise in the Bay Area (Oakland to be exact) from 1967 through 1976. The team was variously known during those years as the Oakland Seals, the California Seals, the California Golden Seals, and finally the California Seals once again. No matter the name, the team was most famous for playing bad hockey in front of empty houses while wearing garish kelly green and California gold uniforms and white skates. In most seasons, the Seals had clinched last place by mid-February. Aprils were reserved for family, golf and relaxing. The Seals were, in a word, awful. But to Mr. Ty Toki and many others, the Seals were the glue that bound friend - ships together and helped form one of the most supportive booster clubs in the league — both back then and now. Today, Ty Toki is an energetic man enjoying his 70s. He has been associated with the Seals Booster Club since its creation back in the early 1960s in support of the old Western League Seals.

O-Pee-Chee/Hockey Hall of Fame Frank Prazak/Hockey Hall of Fame PRAISE FOR THE GAME “A first-rate discussion of hockey by one of hockey’s first-rate players and first-rate minds …. Essential reading for anyone serious about hockey as an important part of Canadian life.” —Hamilton Spectator “The Game is a beautifully written, insightful, perceptive, revealing look at hockey.” —Toronto Star “We always wondered what he was thinking about whenever the play stopped and he struck his characteristic pose resting his chin on his goal stick. Now we know. He was composing one of the best hockey books ever written …. There is a ‘you are there’ quality to the prose as the author-goalie lets you see everything through his eyes, spicing his vivid descriptions with personal reflections and observations …. The Game succeeds both as an inside look at hockey and a portrait of an articulate athlete who knew when to quit.” —Winnipeg Free Press “The Game is a brilliant adventure into ourselves. It makes all other books about the sport look preliminary.” —Calgary Herald “A book about Ken Dryden, about Quebec, about the rest of Canada, and most of all, a loving book about a special sport.” —New York Times “The best Canadian sports book in years.” —Calgary Sun “An incredible memoir, a poetic journey through the life of Les Canadiens. It rises above being just a book about hockey. It’s a book about people, the fragile, delicate moments on the edge of fame and glory, failure and disillusionment. Dryden’s The Game is the complete hockey book.” —Windsor Star “As Dryden reminisces, we are presented with a portrait, in broad and vivid strokes, of the players who comprised the best team in professional hockey….
