Generali Showjumping Tournament

What a fantastic experience in !

The French Open Championships are something that is hard to fathom from Australia. The first week 7,000 horses, compete the following week is slightly quieter with only (!?!) 6,000 horses, which compete across 14 different disciplines each week. The grounds are enormous, with 25 hectares of arenas, plus a further 25 hectares for the cross country course, 20 hectares of parking and of course a castle! In total, there are 27 arenas plus warm up arenas and the grounds now feature Europe’s biggest indoor arena.

Thanks to the assistance of Espoirs Normandie - COREN, I was fortunate to work with Sam Gourmaux, one of France’s leading Junior/ Pony coaches. Sam’s pupils have had success all the way through to European championships and have built highly successful careers. Sam’s local knowledge and understanding of his horses was invaluable in helping me to assist the girls in building partnerships with their horses in such a short time frame and navigate the behemoth that is FFE’s Parc Équestre (I walked nearly 20km in one day alone - which did have the advantage of helping ensure my clothes still sort of fit after all the yummy food!). Unlike many of the teams, Australian girls were riding borrowed horses for the event. We had 4 days of training at Haras de la Chechiniére prior to event to get to know the horses and workout the partnerships. Sam and the COREN had arranged for some lovely and wellbred horses for us.

It is an interesting exercise to arrange four riders on four horses with a deadline to compete. Unlike when you’re horses shopping, there isn’t a option to walk away and find another horse. Rider and horse personalities play such a big part in putting together that initial partnership. Whilst riding style was very important and factored into the decision, personality was the main driver. Having watched a couple of videos of the riders and seen them ride out the the Mont Saint Michel, I had a fair idea which riders would suit which horses once I’d been told a little bit out them. The first rides on the horses in a round robin style swap, confirmed this and then we were flying! By the third day the girls were really going well on their new mounts and we were confident that they would put in a strong performance at Lamotte-Beuvron. And they delivered! They were unfortunate in that their small mistakes resulted in 4 penalties on the board, but they rode with class and stood out as one of the strongest teams in the competition.

From a coaching point of view it fascinating to see the approaches of coaches from different coaches in the warm up ring. I recently read an article in Heels Down magazine where the warm up ring was likened to a Jackson Pollock painting. There was never a truer description of the warm up ring for the International Club Championships! 14 different nations in the warm up ring at one time, horses going every which way, and a cacophony of languages being yelled. At one point there was English, French Thai, Chinese, Indian and tiny bit of Gaelic all being shouted out! Some nations, such as China, we’re working with a French coach, so instructions to one rider often flowed in a mixture of French English and their native language.

Aside from the general chaos that comes from a melting pot of different languages and cultures combined with horses, it was really interesting to see the different techniques used in the warm up arenas by different coaches. Some concentrated on flatwork, jumping minimal fences (typically these were the more experience teams such as French and ), others set up gymnastic exercises, some altered the appearance of fences, other just went for confidence building, lesson style warm ups; and of course there were lots of last minute gear tweaks.

For the Aussie team, we kept the warm up fairly short. Hannah’s horse, a talented mare who had a tendency to come behind the leg, the warm up focused on getting her moving and doing as little jumping as possibly to keep her sharp and motivated. Jess & J’aime had longer style horses, so transitions and changes of direction were really important. For Jess, thèse transitions were within the pace to encourage Black to stay forward on his stiffer side. For Georgia, who had a hot mare, we ended up visualising the course as a cross country full of vertical arrowheads to encourage her to be slow with her body and to compensate for the for the mare’s right drift.

What struck me with the courses, was despite the fact that the fences weren’t big, the course designers were not afraid to add some technicality, using non standard distances and broken lines which asked the rider to make a decision on their pathway and the number of strides. On top of this, the number one arena has a slight down hill gradient, which on day two the course designers used to their full advantage. We had a treble going down hill, towards the gate, with a waiting distance to the vertical at C. This however caused less trouble than the long run towards the gate for the final vertical or the broken line from 5 to 6 jumping towards the trade stands. These sorts of questions weren’t just for our classes. They were presented in various formats from 80cm up, allowing riders to learn how to cope with the question at a low level where the mistake is more easily forgiven.

Thank-you to Pony Club Australia and COREN for a fantastic opportunity!

Pony Club is an international organisation and PCA is keen to increase the opportunities for its members.

2018 has been the biggest year yet for international teams. 49 Australian pony club riders have competed in 6 teams participating in international events in France, China, UK and USA • China Pony Club Championships —rounds of competition in showjumping and games • competition in the UK • Tetrathlon—in 2018 PCA sent a full team to the USA • Generali World Club Showjumping in France against 14 countries • Mounted Games—an annual competition this time in the UK • Club visit to IHorse Centre in Wuhan China.

PCA seeks to send members that are good ambassadors and competent riders, but teams are not just for the elite. Resilience, maturity, curiosity and experience riding unfamiliar horses are also important. Team coaches and managers need to have PCANCAS accreditation and experience managing state teams or equivalent. Congratulations to the riders, coaches and team managers selected.

We hope this inspires members to aim high.

In 2019

At this stage we know PCA teams will be competing in:

 Mounted Games in USA (a team member from Qld, Tas, WA, NT, NSW)

 Inter-Pacific championships in Hong Kong (NT, Qld, Vic, Tas)

 China

And hosting visiting teams from France and China

Sharing the road with animals

Whether you’re riding your horse, or past a horse rider you need to follow certain road rules. Rules also apply to drivers of animal-drawn vehicles, and when you lead an animal when walking.

Horse riders

Horse riders must give way to pedestrians when riding on a footpath or nature strip.

Vehicle drivers must stop at the side of the road and turn off their motor if a horse rider signals that their horse is jumpy or agitated. The horse rider can signal to the driver by raising a and pointing to the horse. The driver must not move the vehicle until the noise of the motor, or the movement of the vehicle, won’t aggravate the horse.

The rider of an animal must not lead more than 1 animal on a road, unless they hold a permit issued by a local council.

Travelling on a road or path

You should ride or lead your animal on the footpath or nature strip (or other road-related area), if it is practical to do so. Only ride or lead your animal on a road if there is no footpath, nature strip or other road-related area.

The driver or a passenger of a vehicle must not lead an animal from the vehicle, including tying the animal to the vehicle. The same rules apply to cyclists.

A person in charge of an animal must not allow its droppings (on a road) to cause a problem for other road users. The driver or rider is responsible for removing any droppings that fall on the road.

How to avoid a collision with an animal

If you need to take evasive action to avoid an animal on the road, assess the situation and take appropriate action that avoids or prevents risk to yourself and other road users. You must not unreasonably obstruct the path of other road users or cause a traffic hazard.

You may safely stop or drive on the road shoulder to avoid hitting an animal, and if you have a clear view of approaching traffic you may safely:

 drive to the right of the centre of the road to avoid hitting an animal (if there is no centre line) or

 drive to the right of a dividing line, a dividing strip, over a single continuous line, over two parallel continuous lines or over a painted island to avoid hitting an animal.

Any evasive action you take must be considered necessary and reasonable with animals
