Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings December 3, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1869 - George Wright signs his contract for the 1870 season, becoming the last of the 1869 starters to sign. MLB.COM Meetings might mark time for Reds to wheel, deal Chapman, Bruce, Frazier among those who could entice offers at annual winter event By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon CINCINNATI -- In what is now Winter Meetings folklore from 1975, White Sox owner Bill Veeck and general manager Roland Hemond set up a makeshift desk and a phone in the hotel lobby with a sign on the table that read "Open for Business." Fast forward 40 years and well into the 21st century, the Reds won't need to employ such tactics. Everybody already knows that president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty and general manager Dick Williams are willing to trade key players to restock for the long term. In the digital age, Jocketty and Williams don't even have to leave their hotel suite next week when the Winter Meetings convene in Nashville, Tenn. Smartphones to call, text message or email are all they need to do that business. Since the General Managers Meetings last month, the Reds have made it clear they are in rebuilding mode and looking to make deals. Closer Aroldis Chapman is a leading candidate to be moved, but Cincinnati will be listening to offers for many of its veteran players approaching free agency within a year or two -- such as right fielder Jay Bruce and third baseman Todd Frazier.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, March 18, 2017 * The Boston Globe Bullpen can’t pick up where Rodriguez left off Peter Abraham SCORE: Astros (ss) 6, Red Sox 2 RECORD: 9-11-2 BREAKDOWN: The Sox had a 1-0 lead after five innings. Their bullpen allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in the two innings that followed. The Sox finished with only five hits. THUMBS UP: Projected No. 3 starter Eduardo Rodriguez was impressive again, working four scoreless innings. He allowed two singles, walked two, and struck out six. The lefty has a 2.08 ERA in four spring starts. “You throw every pitch you want, you know you’ll be ready for the season,” Rodriguez said . Dustin Pedroia made a diving stop of a hard-hit ball by Tony Kemp in the first inning then popped to his feet and threw him out . Robby Scott struck out righthanded-hitting Evan Gattis with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Scott, who is competing for a roster spot, got Gattis flailing at a breaking pitch. THUMBS DOWN: Joe Kelly, who cruised through his first five outings, allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth inning . Noe Ramirez was hit hard in the seventh, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk. Ramirez didn’t get much help from Rusney Castillo, who lost a fly ball in the sun. Castillo later struck out swinging. MEDICAL REPORT: David Price (left elbow) had a day off from his throwing program, which will continue on Saturday.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, March 28, 2017 * The Boston Globe Sandy Leon belts two home runs in one inning Dan Shaughnessy SCORE: Red Sox 11, Orioles 9 RECORD: 16-13-3 BREAKDOWN: Sox center fielder Steve Selsky homered off Tyler Wilson to give Boston a 1-0 lead in the third. It was Selsky’s fourth homer of the spring, his second in two days. He was sent to Pawtucket after the game. Should’ve hit more homers, evidently. The Orioles came back with a scratch run off Eduardo Rodriguez in the bottom of the third. E-Rod got cuffed around a little in the fourth for four runs on five hits. The Sox blew it open with nine runs in the top of the fifth — highlighted by Sandy Leon’s two blasts — one from each side of the plate, and one a grand slam. Mercy. The bullpens staggered to the finish in front of 7,796 happy snowbirds. THUMBS UP: Leon’s two homers in a single inning were a clear “Take that, Boston media!” message, coming one day after we all gave his job to Christian Vazquez. Dustin Pedroia and Mitch Moreland each had a pair of hits. THUMBS DOWN: Rodriguez gave up nine hits and six runs (four earned) in six innings. Manager John Farrell said Rodriguez was sloppy in Baltimore’s four-run fourth. The lefty crossed up his catcher and neglected to back up home plate, among other sins. “He needs to be more consistent,’’ the manager said. “Those lapses can come back to bite you.’’ The Sox committed three errors in the middle innings.

Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments. According to MLR 11(b)4 “A Major League Club may recall a player not to report after the conclusion of the championship season of the Minor League Club to which the player is on optional assignment but no later than October 1” Arizona Diamondbacks Signed: RHP Seth Lintz (Laredo (American Association)), RHP Dustin Loggins (Kansas City (American Association)), RHP Jacob Roberts (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), LHP Sean Mahley (Schaumburg (Frontier)), OF Dan Bowman (Lake Erie (Frontier)), OF Steve McQuail (Schaumburg (Frontier)) Elected free agency:
