  • Groundwater and Surface Water) Quality and Management in the North-West Province, South Africa
A scoping study on the environmental water (groundwater and surface water) quality and management in the North-West Province, South Africa Report to the WATER RESEARCH COMMISSION by CC Bezuidenhout and the North-West University Team WRC Report No. KV 278/11 ISBN No 978-1-4312-0174-7 October 2011 The publication of this report emanates from a WRC project titled A scoping study on the environmental water (groundwater and surface water) quality and management in the north- West Province, south Africa (WRC Project No. K8/853) DISCLAIMER This report has been reviewed by the Water Research Commission (WRC) and approved for publication. Approval does not signify that the contents necessarily reflect the views and policies of the WRC nor does mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation for use. ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BACKGROUND & RATIONALE Water in the North West Province is obtained from ground and surface water sources. The latter are mostly non-perennial and include rivers and inland lakes and pans. Groundwater is thus a major source and is used for domestic, agriculture and mining purposes mostly without prior treatment. Furthermore, there are several pollution impacts (nitrates, organics, microbiological) that are recognised but are not always addressed. Elevated levels of inorganic substances could be due to natural geology of areas but may also be due to pollution. On the other hand, elevated organic substances are generally due to pollution from sanitation practices, mining activities and agriculture. Water quality data are, however, fragmented. A large section of the population of the North West Province is found in rural settings and most of them are affected by poverty.

Accepted 15 July 2016 2015 marked the 90th anniversary of the description of the first fossil of Australopithecus africanus, commonly known as the Taung Child, which was unearthed during blasting at the Buxton-Norlim Limeworks (referred to as the BNL) 15 km SE of the town of Taung, South Africa. Subsequently, this site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site on the basis of its importance to southern African palaeoanthropology. Some other sites such as Equus Cave and Black Earth Cave have also been investigated; but the latter not since the 1940s. These sites indicate that the complex of palaeontological and archaeological localities at the BNL preserve a time sequence spanning the Pliocene to the Holocene. The relationship of these various sites and how they fit into the sequence of formation of tufa, landscapes and caves at the limeworks have also not been investigated or discussed in detail since Peabody’s efforts in the 1940s.

  • A History of Four Black Concentration Camps in the South African War (1899‐1902)
Historia, 64,2, 2019, pp1‐20 Land, labour, war and displacement: A history of four black concentration camps in the South African War (1899‐1902) Garth Conan Benneyworth* Abstract From the outset of the South African War both the British and Boer forces deliberately and directly targeted civilians during their military operations, thus heralding a harbinger of twentieth century “total war”. Well established in the historiography are the camps established by the British for internment of the Boers, later known as concentration camps. Less known are the so‐called “native” refugee camps, which functioned as forced wartime labour camps, and are today known as black concentration camps. Although civilian internment was not genocidal by design and purpose, the high loss of life and bitterness among the Boer descendants shaped the political narrative of twentieth century South Africa. Yet the black forced labour camps were far more lethal and designed along a completely different model to those where the Boers were interned. The memory of this experience has only in the last two decades entered historical discourse about the conflict, however. This article examines those camps which interned black civilians at Orange River Station, Taung, Vryburg and Brussels Siding. Situated approximately 300 kms apart at their southern and most northerly points, the sites of these camps were first identified by the author in the period from 2001 to 2008. Key words: South African War; black concentration camps; forced labour camps; Orange River Station Concentration Camp; Taung Concentration Camp; Vryburg Concentration Camp; Brussels Siding Concentration Camp; Dry Harts.

  • A Preliminary Estimate of the Age of the Gladysv Ale Australopithecine Site
Palaeont. afr., 30, 51-55 (1993) A PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF THE AGE OF THE GLADYSV ALE AUSTRALOPITHECINE SITE by Lee. R. Berger Palaeo-Anthropology Research Unit, Department ofAnatomy and Human Biology, University of the Witwatersrand, Medical School, 7 York Rd., Parktown, Johannesburg 2193 ABSTRACT Excavations conducted at the Gladysvale site in the Transvaal, South Africa during 1991 -1992 have revealed an abundant Plio-Pleistocene fossil fauna from the limeworks breccia dumps and in situ decalcified deposits. To date, over 600 specifically identifiable macro-mammalian specimens have been recovered including the remains of Australopithecus. These identifications have revealed that the Gladysvale site has an extremely diverse macro-mammalian faunal assemblage equal to many other South African Plio-Pleistocene fossil sites. Comparison of the Gladysvale macro mammalian fauna with those of the other early hominid-associated sites in South Africa indicates an age for the deposit(s) at Gladysvale between 1.7- 2.5 m.a.. ln addition, the Kromdraai A macro mammalian assemblage is considered to be closer in age to the Gladysvale assemblage than any other South African faunal assemblage. KEY WORDS: Australopthecus, Gladysvale, Macro-mammalian chronology INTRODUCTION Despite the site's richness in fossil bone, it was not until In November of 1991, a joint excavation project by the recently that the breccias were extensively sampled. Only Palaeo-Anthropology Research Unit and the South Afri a few fossils had previously been identified from the site, can Geological Survey was undertaken at the Gladysvale most of these were recovered by the University of fossil site in the Krugersdorp District, approximately 13 California, Berkeley expedition of 1947-48, and km east of Sterkfontein.
