Tipu as He Really Was Gajanan Bhaskar Mehendale Tipu as He Really Was Copyright © Gajanan Bhaskar Mehendale First Edition : April, 2018 Type Setting and Layout : Mrs. Rohini R. Ambudkar III Preface Tipu is an object of reverence in Pakistan; naturally so, as he lived and died for Islam. A Street in Islamabad (Rawalpindi) is named after him. A missile developed by Pakistan bears his name. Even in India there is no lack of his admirers. Recently the Government of Karnataka decided to celebrate his birth anniversary, a decision which generated considerable opposition. While the official line was that Tipu was a freedom fighter, a liberal, tolerant and enlightened ruler, its opponents accused that he was a bigot, a mass murderer, a rapist. This book is written to show him as he really was. To state it briefly: If Tipu would have been allowed to have his way, most probably, there would have been, besides an East and a West Pakistan, a South Pakistan as well. At the least there would have been a refractory state like the Nizam's. His suppression in 1792, and ultimate destruction in 1799, had therefore a profound impact on the history of India. There is a class of historians who, for a long time, are portraying Tipu as a benevolent ruler. To counter them I can do no better than to follow Dr. R. C. Majumdar: “This … tendency”, he writes, “to make history the vehicle of certain definite political, social and economic ideas, which reign supreme in each country for the time being, is like a cloud, at present no bigger than a man's hand, but which may soon grow in volume, and overcast the sky, covering the light of the world by an impenetrable gloom.

  • Cultural Heritage Map of Wayanad
“A glimpse through the Culture of Wayanad” Cultural Heritage Map of Wayanad The culture of Wayanad, mainly, can be related to the tribal culture. This place is home to a huge population of Adivaasis or tribal people. Some of the main tribes that live here include Adiyars, Paniyas, Kurumas, Kattunaikar and Kadans along with a few other ones. Malayalam is the main language that is spoken here but there are other languages too due to cultural differences. These tribes are known for having a rich legacy of arts and crafts, dance, music, as well as handicrafts. Kolkali, Vattakali, Koodiyattam, Gadhika and Nellukuthu pattu are the main art forms of Wayanad. They also employ several organized farming methods and using herbal medicines for treating any illness, which has been gaining popularity from as past few years. A number of tribal folk performances take place between the months of February and May The Western Ghats serving as a huge barrier shielding Kerala from the rest of peninsular India, there have always been a small trickle of visitors transgressing this mountainous terrain. Relics and edicts found in various parts of Wayanad speak of an important pre historic era. Isolation further enhanced development of unique ways of life; traces of which survive intact amongst Wayanad’s tribe to this day. Passing through a period of Jain dominance, we come to the modern era wherein there are marked influences from prominent historic figures like Tipu Sulthan and the Pazhassi Raja. The eventual colonisation of the area by the British paved the way for organised agriculture which in turn led to large scale migration into the district.

  • Pre Historic Remains Jainism
PRE HISTORIC REMAINS JAINISM BY steffy varghese JAIN TEMPLES IN KERALA • Jainism was one of the oldest religions of Kerala, and was very popular and widely practiced after it came here during the 3rd century BC, just after Chandragupta Maurya left the throne in the 25th year of his rule and started promoting Jainism. He sent missionaries to different parts of the country and a few came to Kerala as well. • Jainism flourished in Kerala, with Jain monks traveling the length and breadth of the state, even going as far as present day Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to spread the religion. • The main purpose behind Jainism started with the Jain believers wanting a tranquil place to practice meditation. They came here, wandered through the entire state, teaching the laws of Dharma and Karma, and the religion was spread. • The spread of Jainism in India led to the flourishing of many Jain temples as well. In each of the temples, you can see a presiding Tirthankara and other Tirthankaras placed alongside the first deity. There are 24 Tirthankaras in all in Jainism. • Tirthankaras are actually liberated souls who have transcended the cycle of birth and death and help others follow the same path. They are ordinary people born into this world, but through intense meditation, kindness and good living attained omniscience. ANANTHNATH SWAMI TEMPLE • This temple is located at Puliyarmala, about 6 kilometres from Kalpetta in Wayanad district of Kerala. The temple is dedicated to the Tirthankara, Ananthanath. • The temple with its beautiful construction lures people interested not only in Jainism, but in ancient architecture as well.

  • EMERGENCE of a KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY Role of Migrant Farmers
Journal of Dharma 44, 2 (April-June 2019), 195-210 EMERGENCE OF A KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY Role of Migrant Farmers in the Educational Progress of Malabar in the Twentieth Century Joshy Mathew Abstract: This article explores the role of a migrant farming community in transforming a conservative and backward society into a modern society. By establishing educational institutions in Malabar region of Kerala, India in the twentieth century, farmers from Travancore educationally revolutionized the Malabar society. Though these farmers were not formally educated, their thirst for knowledge prompted them to formulate various methods and techniques of resource collection for bringing educational progress in the hilly terrains of Malabar. Not only in school education but in higher education also they marked imprints in this wild jungle region of south India. Native people, especially indigenous tribal groups, greatly benefited from the educational institutions of the migrants. Educational institutions of these marginal farmers had impacts upon the feudal social fabric of a conservative society by liberating oppressed people from the clutches of caste system and landlordism.
