Commercial fisheries are expanding their activities into deeper water. The life history features of these deep-water resources make them more vulnerable to exploitation than most shallow-water resources. Moreover, the apparent lack of solid information about the ecology of most deep-water species represents a major limitation for the development and implementation of management strategies. This scenario has caused great concern regarding the sustainability of these resources and the possible environmental impacts on the deep-sea ecosystem. In Latin America, commercial fisheries are going deep as well, and considering the above-mentioned concerns, we felt the need to compile the available information about the deep-water shrimp resources and the current status of their fisheries in Latin America. Focusing on Mexico, Central America, Peru, Chile and Brazil, this review describes the exploited species, and, whenever available, the fishing fleet, fishery statistics, and management strategies. -

References to New Zealand records and other significant references are given for all species previously recorded from New Zealand. The location of New Zealand material is given for a number of species first recorded in the New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity but with no further data. Information on geographical distribution, habitat range and, in some cases, depth range and colour are given for each species. Box 811, Mazatlán, Sinaloa 82000, Mexico ABSTRACT A total of 15 species of pelagic shrimps were collected during the TALUD cruises I-VII (R/V “El Puma”, UNAM) in 1990 and in 2000-2001 in the southeastern Gulf of California, including seven species of Dendrobranchiata (Hymenopenaeus doris, Sergia phorca, S. filicta, Parasergestes halia, Eusergestes similis, Gennadas incertus,andG. sordidus) and eight species of Caridea (Pasiphaea americana, P. emarginata, Hymenodora glacialis, Acanthephyra brevicarinata, A. cf. brevirostris, Plesionika trispinus and Maryprocessa pippinae). Most frequently collected species were G. sordidus (56% of samples), S. phorca (40%), P. emarginata (32%), P. americana and H. doris (both 28%). Most abundant species in the samples were G. sordidus, S. phorca, S. similis and P. trispinus. Sampling was performed between the surface to more than 2000 m. This explains the presence of P. emarginata, a deep-water species rarely reported from the area and not found in much shallower samples taken by the R/V “El Puma” in 1981-1985. Remarks: One genus, Sicyonia H. Milne Edwards, 1830, and 43 species, all marine, have been recognized in this family; 2 species occurring in the Western Central Atlantic are of economic interest, Sicyonia brevirostris and Sicyonia typica. Similar families occurring in the area Solenoceridae, Aristeidae and Penaeidae: integument thinner and less rigid; abdomen without deep grooves or tubercles. Abstract: Isla del Coco (also known as Cocos Island) is an oceanic island in the Eastern Tropical Pacific; it is part of the largest national park of Costa Rica and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island has been visited since the 16th Century due to its abundance of freshwater and wood. Marine biodiversity studies of the island started in the late 19th Century, with an intense period of research in the 1930’s, and again from the mid 1990’s to the present. The information is scattered and, in some cases, in old publications that are difficult to access. Here I have compiled published records of the marine organisms of the island. At least 1688 species are recorded, with the gastropods (383 species), bony fishes (354 spp.) and crustaceans (at least 263 spp.) being the most species-rich groups; 45 species are endemic to Isla del Coco National Park (2.7% of the total). The number of species per kilometer of coastline and by square kilometer of seabed shallower than 200m deep are the highest recorded in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Although the marine biodiversity of Isla del Coco is relatively well known, there are regions that need more exploration, for example, the south side, the pelagic environments, and deeper waters. -

ABSTRACT - A total of six species of pelagic shrimps were collected during the TALUD XIV cruise aboard the R/V “El Puma”, in the northern Gulf of California, in April 2011, including two species of Dendrobranchiata [Eusergestes similis (Hansen, 1903) and Sergia phorca (Burkenroad, 1940)], and three species of Caridea [Pasiphaea americana Faxon, 1893, P. emarginata Rathbun 1902, and P. pacifica Rathbun, 1902]. Additional specimens of the previously reported Maryprocessa pippinae (Wicksten & Méndez, 1985) were also found among the samples. Most frequently collected species were P. americana (50% of total) and P. pacifica (36.6%). Most numerous species in the samples were P. pacifica, P. americana and E. similis. Some minor morphological differences not previously recorded in specimens of Pasiphaea pacifica collected elsewhere were detected. These differences might correspond to an intraspecific variation.
