Keyframe Or Motion Capture? Reflections on Education of Character Animation
EURASIA Journal of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, 2018, 14(12), em1649 ISSN:1305-8223 (online) OPEN ACCESS Research Paper https://doi.org/10.29333/ejmste/99174 Keyframe or Motion Capture? Reflections on Education of Character Animation Tsai-Yun Mou 1* 1 National Pingtung University, TAIWAN Received 20 April 2018 ▪ Revised 12 August 2018 ▪ Accepted 13 September 2018 ABSTRACT In character animation education, the training process needs diverse domain knowledge to be covered in order to develop students with good animation ability. However, design of motion also requires digital ability, creativity and motion knowledge. Moreover, there are gaps between animation education and industry production which motion capture is widely applied. Here we try to incorporate motion capture into education and investigate whether motion capture is supportive in character animation, especially in creativity element. By comparing two kinds of motion design method, traditional keyframe and motion capture, we investigated students’ creativity in motion design. The results showed that in originality factor, keyframe method had slightly higher performance support for designing unusual motions. Nevertheless, motion capture had shown more support in creating valid actions in quantity which implied fluency factor of creativity was achieved. However, in flexibility factor, although motion capture created more emotions in amount, keyframe method actually offered higher proportion of sentiment design. Participants indicated that keyframe was helpful to design extreme poses. While motion capture provided intuitive design tool for exploring possibilities. Therefore, we propose to combine motion capture technology with keyframe method in character animation education to increase digital ability, stimulate creativity, and establish solid motion knowledge. Keywords: animation education, character animation, creativity, motion capture, virtual character INTRODUCTION The education of animation is a long-standing and multidisciplinary training. -

Animating Social Pathology: Ontology, Aesthetics, and Cartoon Alienation by Wolfgang Boehm Under the Direction of Professor Greg Smith ABSTRACT This thesis grounds an unstable ontology in animation’s industrial history and its plas- matic aesthetics, in-so-doing I find animation to be a site of rendering visible a particular con- frontation with an inability to properly rationalize, ossify, or otherwise delimit traditionally held boundaries of motility. Because of this inability, animation is privileged as a form to rethink our interactions with media technology, leading to utopian thought and bizarre, pathological behav- ior. I follow the ontological trend through animation studies, using Pixar’s WALL-E as a guide. I explore animation as an afterimage of social pathology, which stands in contrast to the more lu- dic thought of a figure such as Sergei Eisenstein, using Black Mirror’s “The Waldo Moment.” I look to two Cartoon Network shows as examples of potential alternatives to both the utopian and pathological of the preceding chapters. -

Shawn Patterson
SHAWN PATTERSON SELECTED CREDITS MAKING APES: THE ARTISTS WHO CHANGED FILM (2019) THE LEGO MOVIE (2014) SUPERMANSION (2015-2019) THE ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS (2015-2018) ROBOT CHICKEN (2010-2014) BIOGRAPHY Shawn Patterson is an Academy Award, Emmy and Grammy nominated Composer, Songwriter and Music Producer. Originally hailing from Athol, Massachusetts, Patterson's lifelong passion for music started with his late father, Ronald Patterson, a multi-instrumentalist musician. As a child, Shawn was exposed to television shows whose music scores (and sometimes songs) became engrained in his head: ‘Star Trek’, ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’, ‘Lost In Space’, and ‘Starsky & Hutch’. But it was his introduction to John Williams' legendary scores of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Superman’ that initiated Patterson's profound life long journey to become a score composer and a part of cinematic storytelling through music. Shawn attended Berklee College of Music and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; where he was selected to study privately and perform with legendary jazz musicians Dr. Billy Taylor and Max Roach. As a jazz, blues, rock guitarist and bandleader, Shawn played shows and lead various bands (including trio, duo and solo settings) while writing compositions in his free time. In 1987, Patterson attended and graduated from the Grove School of Music in Studio City, California. While attending Grove, Shawn studied orchestration and arranging privately with Roger Steinman. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1990, Patterson studied composition and orchestration privately with legendary Los Angeles Composer and Orchestrator, Jack Smalley. Patterson soon found success writing music for film trailers around town. Over the years, Shawn has composed score and written songs in an enormous wide range of styles for a number of award winning episodic television shows.
