The bridge directly connects the two quay sides of Sluseholmen and Teglholmen along the main axis of the area. Thus the bridge follows the natural flow along the main axis of the area and with its minimalistic though intricat design it offers a natural con- tinuation of the existing ways of movement for pedestrians and bicyclists in the area. While play- ing with the concept of a straight bridge crossing over the harbor channel. ABSTRACT 03 area for placing a bridge proposed map of the area BRIDGE PROJECT 04 CONTEXT & DATA The Bridge is located in the harbor of Copenha- gen between the two parts; Sluseholmen and Teglholmen across ‘Teglløbet’, which has a width of approximately 100 meters. The area is newly develeoped, based on the mas- terplan by Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec in coopera- tion with Arkitema. The area is still in development, though due to pollution of the site on Teglholmen and the cur- rent financial status of the markets, the next stages of the development of the area has been put on hold for the moment. The area is a kind of pastiche on the historical channel buildings in Holland, Christianshavn and the docklands of London. Though the apartment buildings are designed to look unique, they are similar in their architectural style, and inside all the apartments are very simi- lar, the same inhabitants with the same kitchens and the same number of kids as in all the other newly developed apartments in the area. All signs of previous historical connection to the site has been removed and not many signs of an industrial era has remained. proposed map of the area CONTEXT AND DATA 05 Diagram of my perceived distances of the different areas of Copenha- gen, compared to the reality of the layout of Copenhagen. It’s the beginning of travels and adventures. Under a bridge The underside of a bridge is in history, culture and philosophy used as a reference to the underworld with crime, homeless people, prostitution and drugs. The underside of bridges is for an example used in fairytales as a home for trolls etc. Today the underside of bridges is also used by sub- cultures such as punks, anarchist etc. The underside of bridges is a free space - that is not under the normal control, norms, and laws of society. BRIDGE PROJECT 14 On a bridge When on a bridge it can both function as a place for romantic meetings, and also for tragedy; historicaly a place for ‘jump- ers’ It also offers the views of the city and the nearby area. The middle of a bridge is in a state of ‘non-place’ constantly a flow occurs Passage of a bridge To pass a bridge, the passage itself is a reference to evolution of man in a social and cultural context. A rite of passage. A passage to the unknown other side. In daily use it also creates connections on a large urban scale, the connection of cities and different parts of the city, and on a smaller human scale; connecting people. Thus, the actual de- sign of places and buildings is often becoming less relevant than the movements that unfold between them.” Gilles Delalex Go with the flow Non-Place “If a place can be defined as relational, historical and con- cerned with identity, then a space which can not be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place.” Marc Augé Non-Places an introduction to supermodernity BRIDGE PROJECT 20 IDEAS OF FOUNDATION Throughout the project I worked with two basic ideas, ‘flow’ and ‘the underside of bridges’. Though by the end of the project my focus had shifted more and more towards flow and the idea of ‘non-place’, as argumented by Marc Auge, that the develeoped area of Sluseholmen and Teglhol- men is in a state of ‘non-place’. IDEAS OF FOUNDATION 21 THE BRIDGE The The bridge is located in the southern part of Copenhagen between Sluseholmen and Teglhol- men. The bridge directly connects the two quay sides of Sluseholmen and Teglholmen along the main axis of the area. Thus the bridge follows the natural flow along the main axis of the area and with its minimal- istic though intricat design it offers a natural continuation of the existing ways of movement for pedestrians and bicyclists in the area. BRIDGE PROJECT 22 METHOD OF WORKING THE PROGRAM One aspect I wanted to incorporate more in my Architectual conditions project than I’ve previously done, was the use of social, historical, and philosophical theory and The bridge over the southern inner harbor called ideas in my work process. “Teglværksløbet” is based on the main structure of the overall plan for the southern harboir of This was done mainly by reading of the books; copenhagen. “Go with the flow” by Gilles Delalex; “Non-Places, It starts of at “Ben Webster/dexter Gordens vej” An introduction to supermodernity” by March at “sluseholmen” and end at “Støberihavnsgade” Auge and “Bridge” by Peter Bishop.
