  • Recreating the Ensemble Dynamic of Motown's Funk Brothers
6 Unsung Heroes: Recreating the Ensemble Dynamic of Motown’s Funk Brothers Vincent Perry Introduction By the early 1960s, the genre known as soul had become the most commercially successful of all the crossover styles. Drawing on musical influences from the genres of gospel, jazz and blues, ‘soul’s success was as much due to a number of labels, so-called “house sounds”, and little- known bands, as it was to specific performers or songwriters’ (Borthwick and Moy, 2004, p. 5). Following on from the pioneer releases of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, a Detroit-based independent label would soon become the ‘most successful and high profile of all the soul labels’ (Borthwick and Moy, 2004, p. 5). Throughout the early 1960s, Berry Gordy’s Tamla Motown dominated the domestic US pop and R&B charts with its assembly-line approach to music production (Moorefield, 2005, p. 21), which resulted in a distinctive sound that was shared by all the label’s artists. However, in 1963, the company ‘achieved its international breakthrough’ shortly after signing a landmark distribution deal with EMI in the UK (Borthwick and Moy, 2004, p. 5). Gordy’s headquarters—a seemingly humble, suburban 95 POPULAR MUSIC, STARS AND STARDOM residence—was ambitiously named Hitsville USA and, throughout the 1960s, it became a hub for pop record success. Emerson (2005, p. 194) acknowledged Motown’s industry presence when he noted: Motown was muscling in on the market for dance music. Streamlined, turbo-charged singles by the Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, and the Supremes rolled off the Detroit assembly line … Berry Gordy’s ‘Sound of Young America’ challenged the Brill Building, 1650 Broadway, and 711 Fifth Avenue as severely as the British Invasion because it proved that black artists did not need white writers to reach a broad pop audience.

  • Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) You Can't Hurry Fame: Motown's Unsung Heroes
Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002) You Can't Hurry Fame: Motown's Unsung Heroes Cast & Crew Director : Paul Justman Producer : Paul Justman , Sandford Passman , Alan Slutsky Screenwriter : Walter Dallas , Ntozake Shange Starring : Richard 'Pistol' Allen, Jack Ashford , Bob Babbitt , Benny 'Papa Zita' Benjamin, Eddie 'Bongo' Brown, Bootsy Collins , Johnny Griffith , Ben Harper , Joe Hunter , James Jamerson , Uriel Jones , Montell Jordan , Chaka Khan , Gerald Levert ,Joe Messina , Me'Shell NdegéOcello, Joan Osborne Director: Paul Justman Writers: Ntozake Shange (Narration), Alan Slutsky (book),and 1 more credit » Stars: Joe Hunter , Jack Ashford and Uriel Jones By ELVIS MITCHELL Published: November 15, 2002 ''Forty-one years after they played their first note on a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited in Detroit to play their music and tell their story,'' reads a title early in the director Paul Justman's documentary ''Standing in the Shadows of Motown.'' It is a simple premise that this movie more than lives up to, falling back on the serene power of the Funk Brothers, the squadron of elite musicians heard laying down the rhythm -- and the law -- on Motown's greatest hits. This salute to the literally unsung and underrecognized studio heroes of Motown is so good because it is one of those rare documentaries that combine information with smashing entertainment. And it is one of the few nonfiction films that will have you walking out humming the score, if you're not running to the nearest store to buy Motown CD's. The movie, which opens nationwide today, shifts among four components: performers lining up to offer heartfelt but uninvolving tributes to the Funk Brothers; the musicians talking about performances that turned sheet music into legendary recordings; new renditions of Motown classics with the Funk Brothers backing up guest vocalists like Ben Harper; and dramatic re-creations of Funk Brother anecdotes.

JAZZ GUITARIST JIMMY PONDER: A CASE STUDY OF CREATIVE PROCESSES AND IDENTITY FORMATION IN AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC By Colter Harper BM Duquesne University, 2001 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Department of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MA, Ethnomusicology University of Pittsburgh 2006 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH Faculty of Arts and Sciences This thesis was presented by Colter Harper It was defended on November 30, 2006 and approved by Akin Euba, PhD, Andrew Mellon Professor of Music Andrew Weintraub, PhD, Associate Professor of Music Thesis Director: Nathan Davis, PhD, Professor of Music ii Copyright © by Colter Harper 2006 iii JAZZ GUITARIST JIMMY PONDER: A CASE STUDY OF CREATIVE PROCESSES AND IDENTITY FORMATION IN AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC Colter Harper, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2006 This study examines musical and social processes in American popular music through the creative life of Pittsburgh born jazz guitarist Jimmy Ponder. I contextualize Ponder’s technical and conceptual approaches with a historical analysis of developments in jazz during the mid-20th century. In examining intersections between jazz and other popular forms of music during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, I aim to identify Ponder’s “musical identity,” which encapsulates the totality of his musical existence. In this study, I focus on relating musical sounds to social contexts and the processes that give these sound meaning. Musical identity, as a tool for examining the creative life of the jazz musician, is comprised of the individual’s approach to their instrument(s), recording, band leading, performance, song interpretation, and improvisation. From these approaches develops a “voice” with which the musician creates meaningful musical experiences (authentic performances) as well as engages certain social realities in public contexts (affective collective listening).
