We discovered that the word carousel means "little wars" and those cute wooden animals were initially warlike. Her use of music initiated an impassioned group conversation over the need to obtain copyright permissions for the use of music, especially since Swack's carousel piece was shown publicly at Banff. War games such as jousting later developed into carousels which currently exist for us as rides and perhaps in the future as virtual reality.In addition to horses, menagerie animals represented desirable characteristics needed for battle. All photographs were taken of actual rides on New York’s upper west side from 70- 110th street. “Four Burlesques for Flute and Bb Clarinet”, written by Dr. Irwin Swack is reminiscent of medieval masque plays. His archives are in the Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library. “Carousel” was created under a co-production grant at Banff Center for the Arts in 2002 and then exhibited at the Beecher Center for Arts and Technology in 2003/2004. It will also be shown Sept.9th - Dec 6th 2008 at the Binghamton University Art Museum. Debra Swack is a new media artist whose projects have been internationally exhibited at many institutions including Rhizome/The New Museum, Princeton University, the Banff Center for the Arts, the New York Hall of Science curated by Anne Barlow of the New Museum, the Arts and Genomics Centers in both Amsterdam and Vancouver, Xerox's Palo Alto Lab, Real Art Ways ("Works from the Sol LeWitt Collection") and the Beecher Center for Arts and Technology. She recently collaborated with Interactivos at Eyebeam in “Double Take” on view through August 9th. Her work is mentioned in Xerox Parc’s “Art and Innovation” and Stephen Wilson’s “Information Arts” published by MIT and also in PhotoReview selected by Philip Brockman, Senior New Media Curator at the Corcoran. The works currently on display are by Flame Schon (Santa Fe, NM), Martha Jane Bradford (Brookline, MA), Japi Honoo (Venice, Italy), Debra Swack (New York, NY), Mick Brady (Santa Barbara, CA),and Harry W. Yeatts, Jr.(Blacksburg, VA). Continuing on View BILL THOMPSON: Altered Flats This site specific installation, commissioned by the Butler Institute, features wall sculpture in monochromatic colors. These unique works were fabricated utilizing space-age materials‹acrylic urethane paint on polyurethane block‹and applied with a complex spray technique devised by the artist. September 28 - A Veiling: An Installation by Ed Hallahan with Jacki Mountan This site-specific installation juxtaposes technology with traditional art media, creating an inventive environmental statement that includes fiber, wood, video, light and sound. May - September 19, 2004 Air-hunger: Mary Magamen & Stephan Hillerbrand The project, "air-hunger" explores ideas about communication and trust in relationships through the metaphor of what is traditionally seen as a children¹s activity, chewing bubble gum.

    Why I’m revoking Don Cherry’s citizenship in the Six String Nation. The Six String Nation project was conceived in the divisive atmosphere of the lead up to the 1995 Quebec Referendum on sovereignty. Referenda are necessarily divisive. They take complex problems and cast them as simple choices, usually just between Yes or No. The media took its cues accordingly and the whole debate was framed as blue vs. red, Quebec vs. Ottawa, French vs. English. Even the responses of the rest of Canadians whom the referendum made mere bystanders could only be funnelled into the polarities of “Don’t Go” and “Good Riddance”. But how was that referendum supposed to account for the voices of indigenous people in Quebec, or francophones outside of Quebec or any of the thousands of other perspectives there are on what it is to be Canadian? Well, of course it wasn’t meant to. So the Six String Nation project was meant to invite those conversations by putting diverse histories and perspectives from different communities and cultures and characters into one object - a guitar - the very essence of which is to create harmony out of internal tensions. It would exist not only as an object that illustrated that complex truth but also as a living instrument through which those who played it and those who heard it could articulate those perspectives in their own way in their own place and time. Given my experience shepherding the project around the country and beyond, I can say that it has succeeded in doing just that in however small a way.

It was under review is the reply from Ottawa! In 2013, there were four Meritorious Service Cross (civil) awarded in Canada. No MSCs had not been given since 21 April 2005. It was an odd mixture - of the four MSCs, one already had an MSC (military) and would receive an Officer of the Order of Canada within a year (Chis Hadfield); one already had the Order of Canada (Clara Hughes) and one had died (Sarah Burke). The other was to the Mayor of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. All were well deserved. And all looked very political. This then raises the question, will the MSM (civil) again be awarded or will this become a little used medal. In the past, Canadians who received Olympic gold medals received Meritorious Service Decorations but this stopped with the review. I know several of the MSM (civil) recipients and they are outstanding citizens, well deserving of their honour and they wear the honour proudly. Suddenly, in the Canada Gazette of 02 January 2016, a large number of MSC and MSM (civil) awards were announced. No other announcement about what the review found or request for nominations.

    Media Information Updated June 1st, 2009 Six String Nation is the spirit of a country embodied in a single guitar. Canada. Its diversity of geographies, histories, mythologies, languages, literature, art, food, sport and industry all find a place in the body of the Six String Nation guitar, in the music coaxed from its strings by those who play it and in the imagination of all who encounter it. The guitar is made from 63 items of real Canadian history and heritage in wood, bone, metal and stone representing different cultures, communities and characters from every province and territory of the country. A handful of additional pieces adorn the guitar strap and the interior of the case. Each piece tells a specific story. Eleven years after its conception, the guitar made its official debut on Canada Day, July 1, 2006, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in the hands of Stephen Fearing, Joel Fafard, Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, Mighty Popo, La Volée d’Castors, Michel Pagliaro, Jean-François Breau, Kyle Riabko, Aselin Debison and Stars. Since then, it has traveled more than 200,000km across Canada, been played by hundreds of different musicians and been held by thousands of Canadians – pros, amateurs and posers alike – at festivals, concerts, schools and community events. In February 2008, at a press conference to launch the 39th Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg-St.Boniface, MB, the Six String Nation guitar was officially given the nickname suggested by contest entrant Lt. Col. Susan Beharriell of the Canadian Armed Forces: Voyageur. The ongoing mission of Voyageur and the Six String Nation project is to encourage Canadians to tell the story of Canada from a multitude of perspectives, to know and embrace our diversity as a kind of commonality and to celebrate the power of music – a language that Canada speaks better than just about anyone in the world.
