The night of their high school graduation, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Philippe) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr) go out of town to celebrate. Returning in Barry's new car, they hit and apparently kill a man. While thinking what to do Julie's friend Max Neurick (Johnny Galecki) arrives. Julie tells him everything is fine so he leaves. They dump the corpse in the ocean and agree to never discuss again what had happened. Julie, Barry and Helen overlook the unconsious crumpled body of Ben Willis. One year later Julie is returning home from college. She has not spoken with Helen, Barry or Ray since the accident. Julie receives a letter that reads "I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!" Julie goes to see Helen's sister Elsa Shivers (Bridgette Wilson), who tells Julie that Helen has been working there. Julie shows Helen the letter and they decide to visit Barry. After going over the incident, Barry accuses Max. The three of them go to see Max, but Barry insists on going in the factory alone. Barry persuades Max to go into the back room and attacks him, telling Max he should keep his mouth shut. Julie finds Ray working on the docks. Ray tries to make up with Julie but she runs off. Inside the factory Max is murdered by someone wielding a hook. The killer attacks Barry next, running him over with Barry's car. The killer is shown wearing a raincoat and wielding a hook on one hand. Julie receives the letter from the The Fisherman. Julie arrives at the hospital to see Barry and finds Helen and Ray there. Julie reveals the man they hit was named David Egan. Helen and Julie track his sister, Missy Egan (Anne Heche), to her home, where she has been living since her brother's death. Missy does not recognise them and Julie is convinced she is innocent. Missy tells them she had a visit from a man claiming to be David's friend named Billy Blue. Max is murdered by The Fisherman. At Helen's home that night, the killer breaks in, hiding in her closet. The next morning Helen wakes up with most of her hair cut to bits and "SOON" written in lipstick on her mirror. Julie gets a call from Barry, who tells her to come to Helen's. On the way, Julie hears rattling in her trunk. She opens the trunk to find Max's body. She shuts the trunk, runs to Helen's and brings her and Barry to her car, but the body has disappeared. Julie is convinced the killer took the body and they are not safe. Later they run into Ray, who tells them he got a letter. Julie decides to see Missy again while Helen and Barry watch each other's backs at the parade. Julie tries to convince Missy that David did not kill himself after Missy presents her with a suicide note written in the same style as her letter from the killer. Missy tells Julie to leave. "What Are You Waiting For?" At the Croaker pageant, Helen sees Barry being murdered by the killer. However, neither the killer nor the body are found afterwards. A police officer drives her home, but the killer lures the cop into an alley and kills him. Helen runs to her store where Elsa is working, but the killer finds and murders Elsa. He then chases Helen into the attic where she jumps out of the window into the dumpster. Dazed Helen looks up at the window but no one is there. Helen flees through the back alleys to the roaring parade but hears a noise and turns to look. Helen then turns around when the killer shoves her into a stack of tires and slashers her to death. Julie learns that the killer is Ben Willis, a fisherman. He murdered David Egan after David and Ben's daughter Susan Willis were involved in a car crash near where the four teenagers hit Ben. Susie was killed in the accident and David was unharmed. Ben blamed David and killed him a year later, making it look like a suicide. On the way home, Ben was hit by the group. Helen escapes Shivers into the alley. Julie goes to see Ray on his boat and tells him the story, but he does not believe her. Julie notices the name on his boat is " Billy Blue " and accuses him of the murders. He chases her but is knocked unconscious by a man who tells Julie to get on his boat. After she does, she learns he is Ben Willis. She is chased all over the boat while Ray regains consciousness and steals a boat to save Julie. In a room full of ice, Julie finds Helen and Barry's bodies. Ray climbs aboard and is almost killed by Ben, but is caught in the boat's net. He climbs back aboard and saves Julie. Ben gets his hand caught in a rope and Ray hoists him into the air where his hand is cut off and he falls into the ocean. On land, Ray tells Julie the reason he went to see Missy was because he was guilty and had to know who they hit. He tells her he loves her and they embrace. Ben's body is not recovered. Julie James discovered by the Fisherman on Sweet Susie . A year later, Julie is in her second year and is going on a trip to New York with Ray. She receives a letter resembling the one she had got from Ben, but it only contains a pool party invitation. Julie returns to the bathroom, which has filled with steam. On the shower door, "I STILL KNOW" is written. Ben jumps through the shower door, attacking her. Everything We Know About Amazon's I Know What You Did Last Summer TV Show. I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to become an Amazon original TV show, but when will it release and what is its storyline? We have the answers. Amazon recently announced that they will be the home of the upcoming series I Know What You Did Last Summer . Coming out during the final years of the slasher sub-genre's peak in popularity, the original 1997 movie of the same name expanded into an enthralling trilogy. After nearly fifteen years of silence about the future of I Know What You Did Last Summer, this upcoming series has longtime fans waiting in anticipation. Here's everything we know so far about the series' release date, cast, and storyline. Adapted from Lois Duncan's 1973 novel, I Know What You Did Last Summer starred some of Hollywood's most recognizable names in the teenage horror and drama genres. Freddie Prinze Jr.'s career in teen oriented media kickstarted with the 1997 movie, which led to the actor landing roles in its subsequent sequel as well as She's All That. He is commonly known for his portrayal of Fred Jones in the live-action Scooby- Doo movies. Alongside Prinze were Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is known for her role as Buffy Summers in Buffy The Vampire Slayer , Jennifer Love Hewitt ( Ghost Whisperer ), and Ryan Phillippe ( Return To Sender ). After the group of friends hit a man with their car, they attempt to cover it up, but the past comes back to haunted them a year later. I Know What You Did Last Summer took influence from its fellow teenage slashers such as Prom Night. Luckily, Kevin Williamson of Scream fame was in charge of writing their screenplay and utilized his knowledge of where the sub-genre had grown stale to the movie's advantage. Prior to the release of 1998's Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer implemented the urban legend known as "The Hook." It is about a killer whose on the loose with a hook for a hand, which the movie's killer uses as his weapon of choice. With the resurgence of the slasher sub- genre, it was only a matter of time before I Know What You Did Last Summer joined its fellow teen oriented horror movies in the 2020s by gaining a television series. I Know What You Did Last Summer Series Release Date. Amazon has officially given the green light on the I Know What You Did Last Summer series, but a release date has yet to be announced by the company or showrunners. As of this writing, the most recent announcement regarding the show was made in October of 2020, which did not allude to any hopeful production schedule or release date. It is likely that they are in the midst of undertaking an all new set of COVID-19 restrictions as the second-wave of the pandemic is well underway. If it heads into the first phases of filming by early 2021, it is likely that it will release the following year in 2022. The release dates of the original movies aren't consistent, but they tend to fall into the end of the summer, which would be a likely choice for I Know What You Did Last Summer the television series. Therefore, fans can hope to see it hit Amazon by the end of the summer in 2022, if not sooner. I Know What You Did Last Summer Series Cast. There are no official cast announcements as of December 2020, but most of the crew has been revealed. Sara Goodman of Preacher notoriety is set to write and executive produce the series. As she is no stranger to strange and bizarre stories, Goodman is the ideal choice for the project. Alongside her are Shay Hatten as well as the 1997 movie's Neal H. Mortiz and Erik Feig. James Wan of The Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw fame is also tied to executive produce. I Know What You Did Last Summer Storyline. There is no official storyline at this moment, but it is likely that it will transform the original movie's plot into a much lengthier work. It is possible that they may take a similar route to Scream: The TV Series, which took the basic premise of a masked killer and created an entirely new premise with name recognition keeping it afloat. Rather than follow a similar structure, it may be best if I Know What You Did Last Summer take the original concept and expand upon each character's role through each episode. Regardless of whatever they choose, it will be the first time I Know What You Did Last Summer has been revisited in nearly fifteen years as well as one of the last slashers untouched from their original era, making it a highly anticipated release. She says that her writing technique is not the same as authors that begin writing with a general idea in mind and allow the stories to evolve as they go on. Because her books are so carefully constructed and tightly plotted, every sentence “is there for a reason”. Duncan relates that she can’t picture writing a book without knowing how it’s going to end– it would be akin to going on a trip cross-country without so much as a roadmap. Her other books were made into movies for television that include Don’t Look Behind You, Summer of Fear, Gallows Hill, Killing Mr. Griffin, and Stranger with My Face. Her novel Hotel for Dogs came out in 1971 and was turned into a full-length feature movie starring Emma Roberts in 2009. The book has been published once more by Scholastic and two sequels to it have also come out, News for Dogs and Movie for Dogs. Tragedy struck Duncan’s life when in 1989 her daughter was found murdered in New Mexico. Kaitlynn Arquette was her youngest child and the death was under suspicious circumstances. Duncan compiled the facts about the case as well as conjecture about it into Who Killed My Daughter. The case remains unsolved. Duncan wrote another book about the murder that picked up after the first one and contained new information that the family had gained through a private investigation. It was called One to the Wolves. Her suspense novel Down a Dark Hall was optioned to be filmed as a movie. It was a Gothic suspense genre book. It is being released in 2018 and stars Uma Thurman, AnnaSophia Robb, Isabelle Fuhrman, Noah Silver, Jim Sturgeon, David Elliott, and more. Plot [ edit | edit source ] Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is getting over the events of the previous film which nearly claimed her life. She hasn't been doing well in school and is continuously having nightmares involving Ben Willis (Muse Watson) still haunting her (such as the nightmare in the bathroom from the end of the last movie). Approaching the 4th July weekend, Ray surprises her at her dorm. He invites her back up to Southport for the croaker queen pageant. She objects and tells him she hasn't healed enough to go back and that it's just her. He tells her she needs some space away from Southport and him and leaves in a rush. Late that night someone enters her room alerting Julie. She grabs a knife out of her bedside drawer and hunts all over her room for the suspected fisherman. She runs into her room mate Karla (Brandy Norwood) who tells her she needs to get out and have some fun. They go out to a disco with Karla's boyfriend Tyrell (Mekhi Phifer) and Julie's friend Will Benson (Matthew Settle). After having an illusion of the fisherman she leaves in a hurry. The next morning Karla gets a phone call from a radio station and wins a contest for a holiday to the Bahamas. Julie invites Ray who is not sure if he should go and tells her to have a good time if he can't make it. Ray's friend Dave (John Hawkes) convinces him to go and surprise her. Late that night while driving up to Julie's college they run into Barry's Beamer (from I Know What You Did Last Summer ) and the fisherman lying dead on the road. While Ray goes to inspect, Dave is violently killed by the actual fisherman who has his sliced off hand replaced by a huge hook after Ray discovers it was a dummy dressed as the fisherman. The fisherman tries to run Ray down but Ray jumps down a steep hill and disappears from the fisherman's sight supposedly dead. The next morning, Karla has taken the courtesy of inviting Will and Ti regardless of Ray. Julie is disappointed in Ray and goes ahead with the trip. Upon their arrival they learn that the storm season begins that very day. Ray wakes up in hospital and escapes immediately realizing that the fisherman is coming for Julie and the others. Back at the Bahamas, the group are introduced to the bartender Nancy (Jennifer Esposito) who recommends using the karaoke machine. As Julie sings to Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive", the telepromptor reads "I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!". In fear, she runs back to her room only to be surprised by Will who tells her he really likes her and wants her to have a good time and hands her a rose. Outside on the docks, the dockhand Darik (Benjamin Brown) is slashed across the head by the fisherman. The maid is killed after being impaled in the back by the fisherman. The poolboy Titus (Jack Black) is viciously killed after being pinned to the table by a hook and stabbed in the chest with a pair of hedgeclippers. Ray tries calling the hotel, but is unsuccessful and decides to take matters into his own hands. Back on the island, all alone in her room, Julie finds the dockhand's body in her closet and runs outside to tell everyone. When they all go back to check, they find the body gone and all the blood cleaned up. The hotel manager Mr. Brookes (Jeffrey Combs) tells them the next few days will be rough and tells them to stay put in the meantime. Baggage handler Estes (Bill Cobbs) performs a voodoo ceremony on the stolen possessions of the four to protect them. Ray goes to a pawnbroker and sells his engagement ring for Julie and buys a loaded six-shooter. The next morning Julie and Karla go to the gym to work out while Tyrell and Will go out to find the pool boy. Julie is locked in a tanning bed by the fisherman who turns the temperature up to the max while Karla finds the body of the maid. After finding the horribly bloodied body of Titus , Will and Tyrell realize the girls are in danger and save Karla first and hear Julie's screams and break the bed open. They all go to find Brookes and find him with a machete through his head and the radio destroyed. All the boats have been cut loose and Estes is the prime suspect. They go to find him in his room and find all their possessions and go to find weapons. Julie runs into Estes who informs her he knows who Ben Willis is and that he lived on the island for many years and raised a family. Ray goes to the docks and holds the manager up for a boat. Julie, Karla, Will, Estes and Ti go out to the graveyard and find a tombstone with Julie's name on it. Estes has disappeared once again and Will runs off to find him. Will finds Estes dumping a boat in the ocean and attacks Will with an oar. Back in the hotel, Julie, Karla and Tyrell go and hide in the pantry where Nancy has been hiding. She attacks Tyrell thinking he's the killer. Tyrell is impaled in the neck by the fisherman and the three women run out up to the attic with the killer following behind them. They lock the door below them and climb across the beams but Karla gets her foot stuck in the roof of the room below as the fisherman breaks through and attacks her but they fall through the roof and into the room below. Karla runs for her life and jumps off the balcony into the glass house below. Julie and Nancy run down to the glass house and find Karla okay. As Nancy tries to find the key, the fisherman enters the glass house and narrowly misses Karla after Julie breaks the window on the door open with an axe. They all go to hide in the storm shelter and find all the bodies of the fisherman's latest victims down there. Will comes in and tells them the fisherman's gone. Inside the hotel, Julie tends wound Estes inflicted on Will while Nancy and Karla go and look for the first aid kit. At the main desk, Nancy runs into Estes who has been impaled with a sharp tool and falls onto her as the fisherman comes in and pushes the tool through Estes and into Nancy killing her as Karla watches in horror. He runs after Karla and presumably kills her. Meanwhile Will reveals the blood on his shirt is not his but Estes' and that he is Ben Willis' son. He drags Julie out to the graveyard where Ben Willis meets them and unmasks. As he is about to kill Julie, Ray shows up aiming his six shooter at them. He fires a blank and Will jumps for Ray and eventually weakens him. As the fisherman is about to hook Ray he jumps out of the way in time and Ben accidentally kills his son. Julie shoots Ben several times until he falls into the open grave. Ray and her embrace as the mud begins to fill the grave covering Ben. The next morning, the coast guard informs them a rescue team is on the way. Karla is still alive and is delighted to see Ray. A while later, Julie and Ray have bought a home. One night, Julie suspects someone is in the house. Ray is in the bathroom, but the door strangely shuts. Julie convinces herself it's nothing, but is pulled under her bed by Ben. The movie ends without the audience knowing whether Ray and Julie really died, or if it was another of Julie's nightmares.
