They were highly sought after dogs by local shepherds, who were fond of their energetic and intelligent nature. Sheepdog trials began in the late 1800s, in which this breed of sheepdog impressed and was bred further, developing the Border Collie we recognize today. Today the Border Collie is considered one of, if not the, best sheepherding dogs. The AKC recognized the Border Collie as an official breed in 1995. Border Collies have a high stamina level, matched by their desire to be kept busy. While being a loyal companion dog, the Border Collie mainly thrives on activity. If not given sufficient exercise, Border Collies can be difficult house dogs, directing their energy on less productive activities such as chasing anything that moves or digging. This work-oriented breed requires a high level of both physical and mental stimulation. Border Collies generally have a black and white double coat that sheds moderately. As you can imagine, this breed excels at many sports including obedience, agility and tracking. The Border Collie ranks as Fun Fact the 38th most popular breed.

  • Behavioral Genetics and Animal Science
Chapter 1 Behavioral Genetics and Animal Science Temple Grandin* and Mark J. Deesing† *Department of Animal Science, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA; †Grandin Livestock Handling Systems, Inc., Fort Collins, Colorado, USA INTRODUCTION A bright orange sun is setting on a prehistoric horizon. A lone hunter is on his way home from a bad day at hunting. As he crosses the last ridge before home, a quick movement in the rocks, off to his right, catches his attention. Investigating, he discovers some wolf pups hiding in a shallow den. He exclaims, “Wow ...cool! The predator ...in infant form.” After a quick scan of the area for adult wolves, he cautiously approaches. The pups are all clearly frightened and huddle close together as he kneels in front of the den ... all except one. The darkest-colored pup shows no fear of the man’s approach. “Come here you little predator! Let me take a look at you,” he says. After a mutual bout of petting by the man and licking by the wolf, the man suddenly has an idea. “If I take you home with me tonight, maybe mom and the kids will forgive me for not catching dinner ...again.” The opening paragraphs depict a hypothetical scenario of man first taming the wolf. Although we have tried to make light of this event, the fact is no one knows exactly how or why this first encounter took place. More than likely, the “first” encounter between people and wolves occurred more than once. Previous studies suggest that dogs were domesticated 14,000 years ago (Boessneck, 1985).

Preprints (www.preprints.org) | NOT PEER-REVIEWED | Posted: 8 June 2021 Abstract Domestication had a dramatic influence on the cultural evolution of human histories, and on the biological evolution of domesticated species. Domestic dogs occurred earlier in the Americas than other domesticated animals. Older records in the continent come from North America, dated 11,000-8,400 ybp, and in the Andes from 5,600-5,000 ybp. In order to present an overview of human- dog interaction in the Americas, and to identify gaps in knowledge of this subject, we reviewed 178 publications on zooarchaeological record of burials, genetics, morphology, and ethnological information of American dogs, revisiting the history and interactions across the continent. There is no evidence of an in- situ dog initial domestication.

  • THE PYRENEAN BEARDIE by David Hancock
979 LAUDING THE LABRIT - the sheepdog of the Pyrenees LAUDING THE LABRIT - THE PYRENEAN BEARDIE by David Hancock Only comparatively recently have we in Britain come to appreciate and then value the herding or herd- protecting breeds of France. But nowadays, with 11 Pyrenean Sheepdogs (long-haired/rough-faced), 42 Beaucerons and 154 Briards registered with the Kennel Club in 2015, to reinforce the 108 Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, our acknowledgement of their many agreeable qualities is manifesting itself; all the French herding breeds resemble other European breeds too. The Berger de Brie or Briard is like the Schafpudel of Germany, the Berger de Beauce is similar to our own smooth collie, the Berger de Picardie resembles our long-lost Smithfield Sheepdog, the Berger des Pyrenees looks like the Schapendoes of Holland, the Catalan Sheepdog and our Bearded Collie, by type, as function and climate decided form. Lesser known varieties like the Berger des Pyrenees a face rasee or smooth-faced Pyrenean Sheepdog, the Berger du Langedoc or Farou, the Berger de Bresse, the Berger de Savoie and the Labrit from Les Landes in the south-west indicate the way in which the various areas can produce their own types, rather as the Galway Sheepdog and the Glenwherry Collie of Ireland, the Welsh Hillman, the Black and Tan Collie and the Old Welsh Grey of Wales and the Smithfield Sheepdog of England existed in the British Isles. The show ring has refined each of the surviving pastoral breeds, whilst making those of a type all too similar to each other, almost a standardisation.

Currently, the Patagonian Sheepdog is most commonly found in the Chilean Patagonian region (43◦12’ S to 56◦30’ S), where it plays a fundamental role as a working dog in sheep and, to some extent, in cattle farming. Dog types that may have contributed to the Patagonian Sheepdog include the Old Welsh Grey and other old UK herding dogs.
