Don't count on Phils repeating as champs | Philadelphia Inquirer ... http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/39606702.html SPORTS Welcome Guest | Register | Sign In High School Sports email this print this TEXT SIZE: A A A A Posted on Sat, Feb. 14, 2009 Don't count on Phils repeating as champs In five trips to the Series, the team didn't make it back the next year, much less repeat. By Rich Westcott For The Inquirer The euphoria from the Phillies' 2008 World Series victory has yet to subside, but as spring training begins, the speculation already has started. Can the Phillies do it again? Can the team that was one of the best in Philadelphia baseball history and one that captured the hearts of the region win a second consecutive World Series championship? Will there be another parade down Broad Street? While posing that question, which the Phillies and most of their fans hope will be answered in the affirmative, let's look at what the team did in the years after its previous trips to the World Series. The Phils appeared in the Fall Classic in 1915, 1950, 1980, ERIC MENCHER / Staff Photographer 1983 and 1993. Phillies catcher Darren Daulton (right) and reliever Mitch Williams during the 1993 World Despite high expectations, there were no repeats. In the Series against Toronto. last half-century, only one of Philadelphia's major sports teams, the 1974-75 Flyers, won two championships in a row. And in baseball, no team has won two straight since 1 of 3 View images the 1998-2000 New York Yankees. -

La Salle College High School Football: in Retrospect
La Salle College High School Football: In Retrospect NOTE: This is the twenty-first of, I hope, many retrospectives highlighting some unique history of the football program at La Salle. The topics to discuss seem endless at this time. Hope you enjoy these. Bill Wasylenko, ‘69 Issue Number Twenty One: 1964 – The Year Of The Blue (and Gold) Snow As an eighth grader in the fall of 1964, I had met my first love, as had many of my peers. My first love wasn’t named Donna, Linda, or Mary Anne, it was the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, which was unexpectedly and inexplicably riding high in first place in the powerful National League. It was “The Year Of The Blue Snow”, as coined by Phillies catcher Gus Triandos, to denote a once-in-a-lifetime MIKE TOS occurrence. Though the team had shown promise and progress the last few years, no one gave these castoffs much of a chance to win a pennant in 1964 against a lot of great teams like the Dodgers, Giants, Reds, Braves, and Cardinals. The Whiz Kids of 1950 had become long in the tooth, and the farm system was barren in the late 50’s. Many prospects were instead suspects, and by 1961, the Phils were the league doormat. Young Gene Mauch took over the helm in 1961, and labored through a 47-107 season, featuring a lovely 23-game losing streak. But there was some promise in youngsters like Johnny Callison, Tony Taylor, and Tony Gonzalez, all acquired in trades, and farmhands like catcher Clay Dalrymple and shortstop Bobby Wine were able to claim starting spots. -
Danny Litwhiler, Became One of the Greatest Ballplayers Ever to Adorn a Spartan Uniform
Michigan State Baseball 2007 Media Guide Michigan State University Elite Spartans Spartan Pride 7 Michigan State Baseball 2007 Media Guide Kirk Gibson Kirk Gibson, who joined the baseball team as a junior in 1978 at the recommendation of head coach Danny Litwhiler, became one of the greatest ballplayers ever to adorn a Spartan uniform. Bringing pure speed and raw talent to every at bat, Gibson possessed power at the plate that was unmatchable. Known for his intensity and tenacity, Gibson played just one season at Michigan State before entering the major league draft, where he was chosen as the No. 1 pick by the Detroit Tigers in 1978. Carrying his fi erce competitiveness with him to the big leagues, Gibson became one of the greatest big-moment players in baseball history. A Waterford, Mich., native, Gibson earned fi rst-team All-America honors for the Spartans in both baseball and football in 1978, hitting .390 with 16 homers and 52 RBI in the spring and catching 42 passes for 806 yards (19.2 avg.) with seven touchdowns in the fall. In one of the most historic moments at Kobs Field, Gibson launched a home run that cleared the trees and the Red Cedar River, landing on Adams Field (formerly known as Landon Field) for a blast measuring 550 feet. A four-year letterman in football (1975-78), he amassed 112 career receptions for 2,347 yards and 24 TDs. Highly recruited in both sports, Gibson opted to enter the June 1978 MLB draft. Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson dubbed Gibson as “the next Mickey Mantle.” Nagged by injuries in his fi rst few seasons, the former MSU all-star broke onto the scene in 1984, helping guide the Tigers to a World Series Championship. -
