In late March a heavy storm ruined the Independence Day parade on 25th. April was mild and sunny but there were still periods of rough weather. The weather settled down after this. The Summer was very, very hot. In October the weather was mixed being cold and wet and stormy at times. This produced a disappointing migrant evidence. Amongst the hirundines there were plenty of swallows but few martins, and only one species of Wheatear was recorded. The rivers were dry and recent rain produced pools in the riverbeds but these did not attract birds. BIRDS The dry weather resulted in fewer records of wildfowl this Spring. However there were plenty of other records of interest with Greater Sand Plover, Pacific Golden Plover, Kittiwake, White-breasted Kingfisher, Upchers Warbler, Spectacled Warbler, Marmora's Warbler, Rock Nuthatch, Crossbill and Bullfinch amongst others being reported and Penduline Tit turned up again in October. A density surface modelling approach using survey data from line transects, integrated with a geographic information system, was applied to estimate the population density and abundance of the fan mussel in the study area. Marked zonation of P. nobilis distribution was revealed with a density peak at a depth of ~15 m and practically zero densities in shallow areas (<4 m depth) and at depths >30 m. A hotspot of high density was observed in the south- eastern part of the bay. The highest densities occurred in Caulerpa racemosa and Cymodocea nodosa beds, and the lowest occurred on rocky or unvegetated sandy/muddy bottoms and in Caulerpa pro- lifera beds. The high densities of juvenile fan mussels (almost exclusively of the first age class) observed in dense beds of the invasive alien alga C. racemosa were an indication of either preferen- tial recruitment or reduced juvenile mortality in this habitat type. In C. nodosa beds, mostly large individuals were observed. The total abundance of the species was estimated as 130 900 individuals with a 95% confidence interval of 100 600 to 170 400 individuals.

Autumn flowers were slow to emerge from the parched ground but, nevertheless, we saw everything we expected, except in smaller quantities than we may have hoped for. We had a great week exploring the wilder parts of western Crete and many aspects of its fascinating geology, history and archaeology. Our success was due, in no small part, to the enthusiasm and good humour of the group, the interesting walks and good food. Day 1 Tuesday 17th October We arrived in Crete in mid-afternoon. The weather was sunny, settled and clear, with a temperature in the mid- twenties and it remained that way for the rest of the week. After checking into our hotel, we made the short journey to the Theriso Gorge, in the foothills of the White Mountains, a little way south of the city. We made a few brief stops in the narrow gorge, finding our first Cyclamen graecum subsp. candicum, wedged into tight crevices in the limestone. On the cliffs, we identified some of the commoner endemic plants, typical of Crete’s interesting chasmophyte flora, many of which we would encounter during the rest of the week.

    THE GULF OF SOUDA DURING THE CENTURIES HELLENIC MINISTRY OF CULTURE 28TH EPHORATE OF BYZANTINE ANTIQUITIES MUNICIPALITY OF SOUDA THE GULF OF SOUDA DURING THE CENTURIES HANIA MAY 2007 THE GULF OF SOUDA DURING THE CENTURIES he gulf of Souda, at the northern shores of the nowdays Chania region, is formed by the mainland of Crete and the peninsula Melecha or Akrotiri. Its geomorphology and orientation, in conjunction with its size and adequate depth, create a safe harbor throughout the year. Its geo- Tgraphical location at the centre of the Eastern Mediterranean, on the trace of ancient sea-roads, acquires unique strategic importance, thus stimulating the vivid 2 interest from antiquity to the present day. In the gulf of Souda throughout time there have been developed com- plex defensive systems, verifying the continuous interest in the area by the relevant occupants. he gulf of Souda is elongated in shape with maxi- mum length 8km and width 2.600m at the T entrance, which decreases to 1500m due to the existence of two rock-islands at its northern side. To its shallow, sandy cove ends the Moronis torrent and at its sides small bays are shaped, suitable for anchoring, such as of Ag. Marina, Limionari tis Grias to the south, Aspalatheas and Limni to the north, while outside the gulf are the Loutraki and Marathi bays, as well as a small rock- island named Palia Souda or Marathi. At both sides of the gulf the land is semi-mountainous.
