Those who research prehistoric ritual frequently encounter difficulties in the interpretation of its often tantalisingly incomplete material record. Although Richards and Thomas do rightly stress that ‘ritual is not beyond the realm of archaeological inference’ (1984: 215), many questions cannot be answered with only fragmentary evidence. Ritual activity may be evident in the form of material structured deposits, for example, but often the details surrounding their deposition do not survive. It was created in 1920 by Professor Titu Vasiliu (1885–1961). The purpose of our paper is to present the most important landmarks of this Society and to put into evidence its place in the Romanian series of morpho-clinical societies. Documentary Material: The activity reports of “Anatomical Meeting” from Cluj, summaries published in “Medical Cluj” journal referring to the presentations and discussions of the cases, which were held at different meetings of this Society. The activity of the “Anatomical Meeting” from Cluj increased, in a significantly and consistently way, the level of morphological and clinical training of physicians from Cluj. There are mentioned some of the most important presentations and the personalities which had special contributions in the evolution of this Society. Conclusions: The “Anatomical Meeting” was a scientific forum that propagated morpho-clinical concept in Romanian medicine, initially in Cluj, and then on a national level. It contributed to the collaboration between pathologists, clinicians and laboratory physicians from Cluj and favored scientific emulation between them. It also was a tribune from which were discussed a few new medical achievements. -

After war, while sociology was abolished by the communist political regime, anthropology survived under the leadership of the physician Ștefan Milcu, an ex-member of Rainer’s team. As Director of the Anthropological Research Centre, Milcu took over the idea of monographical research ‒ this time from a bioanthropological perspective. However, he invited to researches a few social scientists to cover some aspects of demography, family studies, ethnography etc. Among them, especially Traian Herseni and Vasile Caramelea (under the protection identity of “demographer”, “or statistician”) produced outstanding contributions to the monographs of the villages Clopotiva, Bătrîna, Nucșoara & Cîmpu lui Neag ‒ all of them in the district of Hațeg, an ancient county of great importance for understanding the genesis of the Romanian people. A collateral super-eff ect of this activity was the foundation ‒ în 1964, at Vasile Caramelea’s initiative ‒ of the Section of cultural anthropology in the organization of the Anthropological Research Centre. -

Reading practice 1A Justin Bieber’s Baptism Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to say hello to Carl Lents, a New York pastor who has baptised Justin Bieber in an anti-racist ceremony. Leather-jacketed, and very popular in various American talkshows, Carl is the head of some kind of New York Pentecostal ministry, which was established with the lead singer of a Christian rock band, and is called Hillsong. For those who don’t understand the connection between this pastor and the famous singer Justin Bieber we have to explain how it all happened, Justin recently fell victim to one of those absolutely classic growing pains: that thing when teenage videos show you singing Ku Klux Klan songs, telling racist jokes and joking about killing black people. This kind of attitude was not considered appropriate, and as a consequence the whole process started. Carl Lents reported that he had spent a week doing intensive Bible study with Justin, before the singer was judged ready to be baptised. With no church able to offer the privacy Bieber desired, the ceremony was apparently performed in a friend’s bathtub. However, we could ask ourselves whether this is a real need to change the attitude or a favourite celebrity baptism, something that other celebrities have done and which can make Bieber sell even more than before. A Are the following statements true (T) or false (F)? Identify the part of the text that supports your answer by copying the exact passage. 1 Carl Lents is an American pastor who has prepared Bieber for his baptism. -
