5 Adat Shalom’s Kol HaShalom October 2017 New Member Corner Thank you to Anat Soffer for interviewing our new members! Art and Beth Ojena Welcome back to Arthur (Art) and Beth Ojena! The Ojenas were active members of Adat Shalom in the 1970s to early 1990s. Art was president of The Men’s Club, and their two daughters, Amy and Megan, attended nursery and religious school, and celebrated their Banot Mitzvah at Adat Shalom. Art grew up in Venice, Los Angeles, and Beth in , Colorado. After graduating college, Beth moved to Los Angeles to begin a career in education, where she met Art. Beth enjoyed a 40 year career as an educator for LAUSD, first as a teacher and later as a principal at a school in Venice. Today, Beth volunteers to mentor new principals at LA Unified, which she finds to be very meaningful. Art worked in the human resources field and as a teacher at Hamilton High School, where he taught history and was influential as a career advisor. Art loved helping high school students achieve their life and career goals, and guiding them in etiquette. Today, Art volunteers at Cedars-Sinai and at Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, which he believes to be an environmental treasure. The Ojenas’ daughter, Amy, lives in and is engaged to be married. Their daughter Megan lives in Encino with her husband and two children, Jaden who is 7, and Mara who is 5. Beth says “the grandchildren are the light of our lives!” Art and Beth also enjoy taking classes at Emeritus College in Santa Monica, which offers a broad range of classes geared towards the older adult community.

Beth and her sister recently started attending Adat Shalom’s morning Minyan in order to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish for their mother. Beth has enjoyed meeting and developing deep connections with the wonderful people leading and attending the minyan. The Ojenas enjoy taking Rabbi Lebovitz’s classes and attending Shabbat services.

Thank You! Thank you to Sandra Kass for being Shammas extraordinaire over the High Holidays, for coordinating all of the honors, and making sure all of the services ran so beautifully! Thank you also to everyone who volunteered before and during the High Holidays:
