History of Medicine 5(4): 286–291. https://doi.org/10.3897/hmj.5.4.35689 Abstract Based on the analysis of available publications and using archival materials, an attempt has been made to present the main pe- riods in the life and work of Z.S. Tambiyeva, one of the first women to work as a doctor in the national regions of the Russian Empire. Specificities inherent to the provision of medical care for the peoples of the Muslim regions and important moments in the rural doctor’s work are considered. A female doctor’s role in providing medical assistance to the local population has been noted, since in the regions where Muslims lived, women, due to local customs and religious traditions, did not seek medical help from male doctors. In Decem- ber 1911, Z.S. Tambiyeva moved to the Baku Governorate. From 1912, she worked as a private practicing doctor in the industrial village of Raman, in the suburbs of Baku.

  • Memoirs. National Existence and Cultural Struggles of Turkistan And
Memoirs National Existence and Cultural Struggles of Turkistan and Other Muslim Eastern Turks Prof Zeki Velidi Togan Translator's Note his work needs to be read as a manual of governance in practice. It does not Tventure heavily into theory, as it concentrates on how large-scale applications of governance are conducted. In addition, the author was one of those practitioners who interacted and bargained with Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky and the rest of the Soviet and Bolshevik luminaries of his own time for Baskurdistan and Turkistan. It can be read profitably in the context of anti-colonialism, Sub-altern studies, Russian and Soviet studies. He presents the issues on world-wide bases. Ahmet Zeki Velidi Togan (1890-1970) provides the details of his pursuits and en- vironment in his own words. As he points out, in his own preface, he was not content to solely depend on his memory or even notes; he made use of secondary sources and collective recollections of his colleagues, especially to verify the political events. However, in rendering his words into English, the following provisions were borne in mind: 1. Gnosis: Togan was well read and in depth. At one point he delves into his own use of the term “Moslem.” Two of the arguments he presents are worth noting here: Now, we are learning the German organizations which are close to the same aims, with Azimbek. Here, the task of keeping together social- ism with nationalism in the same organization is split into two. One is National Socialists; but their primary aim is animosity toward the Jews.

1 COLD WAR CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND THE MOISEYEV DANCE COMPANY: AMERICAN PERCEPTION OF SOVIET PEOPLES A dissertation presented by Victoria Anne Hallinan to The Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts May, 2013 2 COLD WAR CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND THE MOISEYEV DANCE COMPANY: AMERICAN PERCEPTION OF SOVIET PEOPLES by Victoria Anne Hallinan ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History in the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts May, 2013 3 Beginning in April of 1958, as part of the Lacy-Zarubin Agreement, the Moiseyev Dance Company visited the United States with performances in multiple cities including New York, Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia. The Moiseyev fascinated American audiences and Americans drew direct comparisons between themselves and their culture with that of the Soviet Union, as presented on stage by the Moiseyev dancers. The company evoked a multitude of responses, from protest to admiration, fear of cultural inferiority to enthusiasm for the United States to send over its own cultural representatives to demonstrate American cultural excellence. Newspapers and magazines widely discussed how the group influenced political relations, whether writers felt the company demonstrated that cultural performance was a non-political space in which mutual respect between the two superpowers could be achieved or that it was pure propaganda, and possibly even dangerous propaganda at that.
