Library and Friends Participate in L3ND Institute

The Library, along with the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library and other local organizations, was fortunate to be accepted into a special program sponsored by the Otto Bremer Foundation. L3ND (Libraries and Literacy Leadership North Dakota) is a leadership institute that offers education and mentoring to participants with the goal of helping to build the strength and integrity of libraries and literacy programs within Bremer Bank communities. There is also a grant awarded to all participants in the Institute. The Library’s partners for the Institute are: The Adult Learning Center (Bismarck Public Schools), Bismarck Global Neighbors (a New Americans support organization), and the Friends of the Bismarck Public Library. Representing the Library at the various meetings and training sessions are Reference and Adult Services Librarian Sarah Matthews and Head of Youth Services Traci Juhala.

After the initial meetings in May, the Bismarck partners decided on three goals for the Institute: 1) Developing community conversation groups for English language learners to practice their new skills; 2) Completing a community literacy needs assessment to determine the greatest needs; and 3) Promoting digital literacy. The first goal is being implemented this fall. Community conversation groups of native English-speakers and English language learners are meeting on Monday evenings at the Library through November 16. For more information about the Institute or the programs being developed, please contact either Sarah ([email protected]) or Traci ([email protected]).
