‘Love each other as I have loved you’ John 15:12

Newsletter week ending 25th June 2021

Mrs Truslove writes: Huge congratulations to all of the children who have taken part in the various sporting events this week and well done on the many and varied successes. We are always so proud of you for taking part but it is lovely to also take the win. Thanks to Mr Wilkinson for organising these events.

Hockey Well done to the Quicksticks Hockey team from years 5 and 6 for Wednesday evening’s skills sessions and matches at Moulton School. Wren, Beck, Cara, Elena, Ruben, Toby, Finley and Adele were excellent with the skills, scoring loads of points in that part of the event and they then went on to win every match they played against teams from and CCS to finish 1st overall.

Cricket skills festival We took 2 teams, from years 3 and 4, to Playing Fields on Thursday morning to take part in a Cricket Skills Festival, where the children all took part in 6 different cricket skills stations and scored points for their performance. There were also extra points given out, based on School Games Sporting Value, for Respect, Teamwork and Honesty and these were added to the performance scores to give an overall score and our two teams finished in 1st and 2nd place, with the year 4 narrowly edging out the team from year 3. Well done to Catherine, Ollie, Olivia, Alfie, Cohen, Jack and Ava from year 4 and Eva, Fleur, Joseph, Charles, Mae, Martha, William, Tom F and Toby from year 3.

Kwik Cricket We also managed to take 2 teams to yesterday afternoon’s Year 5/6 Kwik Cricket competition, again at Guilsborough Playing Fields, where they faced off against teams from Crick (A, B and C teams), Badby, and Overstone. At the end of the group stages of matches, Team A progressed through to the overall final after winning all 3 of their matches, while Team B missed out on joining them on run differential after tying at the top of their group. Team B played in the 3rd place playoff and again lost by the narrowest of margins; tying for runs it came down to wickets lost. Team A then played in the final against Overstone and won by 2 runs to claim the title. As we don’t have the space at school for a proper kwik cricket pitch, it was the first time that many of the children had played this version of the game, with fielding and bowling much larger elements than the versions that we normally play. Every single one of them were excellent and also improved as the afternoon went on, showing really good teamwork to encourage each other, especially when bowling. Team A: Sterling, Wren, Beck, Lucas, Harry, Calum, Darcey, Jack R and Adele Team B: Toby, Elliott, Elena, Finley, Jude, Florence, Henry, Edward and Kenny

For all three of the events attended out of school this week, the children that went were an absolute credit to the school. They behaved to the excellent standard we always expect from them and showed real teamwork to encourage each other and work together to achieve great things.

Thank you to Sport for organising and running the events. With all of the current restrictions still in place, it was amazing for the children to be able to get back to competition and representing the school.

Finally, the events use young leaders from the local secondary schools for the officiating and running of the events and it was lovely to see some familiar faces from Guilsborough at yesterday’s cricket, with Arthur, Josh, Lilia and Megan all former students of East Haddon (now in year 9) making the most of the leadership opportunities on offer to them.

Year 3 are also playing a football fixture against a team from Guilsborough Primary this afternoon. More to come on this next week.

Mrs Barnes/Mrs Truslove Next week in maths, Year 1 will be looking at mental addition and subtraction. Reception will be exploring measurement. In science we will be describing and identifying a variety of common animals and fish. The children have made a wonderful start observing and sketching shells, we were very impressed.

Mrs Gibbins The children are all very excited to be doing an assembly about the Vikings. They will be bringing home their words today (Friday) - please look through them with them. They need to make sure they remember to have them in school everyday. We will be recording our assembly on the 13th July and to really get into the mood I would like the children to come to school dressed as Vikings. They will be bringing home a guide sheet on how to create the look (simply). They will wear these costumes for the assembly. Thank you. If possible could your child bring in a cereal box for Monday? I would like to start making helmets to go with the costumes. We will also make shields so if anybody has any large cardboard they could donate that would be great.

Homework is in the yellow books and we will be doing the 10x table next week.

Mrs Pickles/Mr Wilkinson Years 5 & 6 Puberty talk: This will take place on Thursday 8th July and will be delivered by the school nurse.

Times tables: All times tables division facts mixed up. Homework this week: There is no spelling homework sheet so that Year 4 can continue to prepare their Where in the World presentations. Yr6: Maths: 3 pages in the CGP books on Prime Numbers, Square and Cube Numbers and Mixed Practice (p.25, 26 & 27) English: 2 pages in the Grammar book on Colons (p.58 & 59). Friends of East Haddon School

Dear Parents of East Haddon School,

Well, what a bizarre few months it has been! My name is Sarah and I am Chairperson of The Friends of East Haddon School Charity. Our role for many years has been to raise money for the extra things the school needs and for those special things that sometimes budgets do not allow. Over the last few years we have achieved so much through the hard work of a special group of parents who volunteer their time. The things you can actually see - the new extension to the playground and the lovely grass area - have been so beneficial to allow the children the extra outside space and allow social distancing in their bubbles. Theatre trips and special visitors to school are all so valuable to our children’s journey at school and these could not have happened without the hard work of our school Friends.

Sadly, due to the Pandemic, we have not had the usually sociable playground environment and I know from experience my son has really missed getting to know the “littlies” as they are affectionately known. A knock-on effect from this hasalso been to Friends, as usually we would have the chance to introduce ourselves to new parents get to know you all whilst running events.

From September, I will sadly be stepping down from the Committee as my son now moves on to big school and I would love to leave my role with the knowledge that a new group of parents are going to move forward enthusiastically with this wonderful charity. I know from years of avoiding joining that I missed out on so much - you get to meet new friends at meetings, over coffee (sometimes wine!) discussing fun events all of which help our children. Our AGM will be held in the new term (October time) and I would love to be able to welcome and meet new mums, dads etc. on this date, as by then I am hopeful that we might be able to share a glass of wine…

Our treasurer, Vicky Hill, will also be stepping down in September but will be around for the next year to hand over our accounts and answer any questions.

As parents at East Haddon School we are part of a special group. I have been privileged to have my three sons attend and they have all benefited so much from what the school do and all the extras from Friends. Personally, I have meet such special friends throughout the years. The Friends have such a wonderful relationship working alongside the school making things possible, as the teachers always give us their time and support often running events - I know that this can only go from strength to strength.

If anyone would like to discuss, please drop me a line. My email is [email protected]

I wish everyone a lovely summer - stay safe.

Sarah
