FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Servant Leadership July 5, 2020 10:00 a.m. We extend a special welcome to those who are joining us for our live stream on this Lord’s Day as guests and friends. Come, let us worship our Risen Lord! SHARING COMMUNION DURING THIS TIME OF SEPARATION While the Lord’s Supper is designed to be a shared meal, we are going to celebrate it “together in separation.” This morning we will celebrate the sacrament during our live stream worship service. The pastor will share the liturgy for the sacrament during our time of worship. So this is what we are inviting you to do prior to the service: • Prepare your own bread and cup. (Any bread and juice you have on hand will do.) • Prepare a place at your table, just as we will prepare the Lord’s table in the Sanctuary. • Perhaps light a candle or open your Bible to the Scripture we will read during the service. • Most importantly, prayerfully ready yourself to participate in the service and receive the gift of the Sacrament. PRELUDE David Cantwell, piano WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. L. John Gable Leader: How good and pleasant it is when people live together in unity. People: It is like precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard and over the collar of the robe. Leader: It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. People: For there the Lord ordained His blessing, life forevermore. Unison: In the unity of faith, let us worship the God of our salvation. OPENING HYMN “You Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim” Hanover (Please join in singing) You servants of God, your Master proclaim, And publish abroad Christ’s wonderful name. The name all victorious of Jesus extol, Whose kingdom is glorious, who rules over all. Ascended on high, almighty to save, He still remains nigh; His presence we have. The great congregation His triumph shall sing, Ascribing salvation to Jesus our King. “Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!" Let all cry aloud and honor the Son. The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, Fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb. Then let us adore and give Him His right: All glory and power, all wisdom and might, All honor and blessing, with angels above, And thanks never ceasing, and infinite love! PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Rev. Oscar Clavel Almighty God, we confess how hard it is to be Your people. You have called us to be the Church, to continue the mission of Jesus Christ to our lonely and confused world. Yet we acknowledge we are more apathetic than active, isolated than involved, callous than compassionate, obstinate than obedient, legalistic than loving. Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins. Remove the obstacles which prevent us from being Your representatives to a broken world. Awaken our hearts to the promised gift of Your indwelling Spirit. These and all things we pray in, through and for the sake of Christ Jesus our Lord, in whose name we now silently pray. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, Who forgives all our sins, strengthen us in goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel. Unison: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Second Helvetic Confession – The Church “The Church is an assembly of the faithful called or gathered out of the world; a communion, of all saints, namely, of those who truly know and rightly worship and serve the true God in Christ the Savior, by the Word and Holy Spirit . and since there is always but one God, and there is one mediator between God and all people, Jesus the Messiah, and one Shepherd of the whole flock, one Head of this Body, and one Spirit, one salvation, one faith, one Testament or covenant, it necessarily follows that there is only one Church. We call this church catholic because it is universal, scattered through all parts of the world, and extended unto all times, and is not limited to any times or places . the Church is divided into different parts or forms; not because it is divided or rent asunder in itself, but rather because it is distinguished by the diversity of the numbers that are in it.” We are the Church. Amen. SPECIAL MUSIC “Glorious Day” Kristian Stanfill I was buried beneath my shame. Who could carry that kind of weight? It was my tomb 'til I met You. I was breathing but not alive. All my failures I tried to hide. It was my tomb 'til I met You. You called my name and I ran out of that grave! Out of the darkness into Your glorious day! Now Your mercy has saved my soul. Now Your freedom is all that I know. The old made new Jesus when I met You. I needed rescue. My sin was heavy, But chains break at the weight of Your glory I needed shelter. I was an orphan. Now You call me a citizen of Heaven. When I was broken, You were my healing; Now Your love is the air that I'm breathing. I have a future my eyes are open, ‘cause when You called my name, I ran out of that grave! Out of the darkness into Your glorious day! You called my name, and I ran out of that grave! Out of the darkness into Your glorious day! SCRIPTURE LESSON Acts 6:1-8 Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.” What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. SERMON Servant Leadership Rev. L. John Gable “Select from among yourselves those whom we may appoint to wait on tables.” MOMENT OF SILENT REFLECTION AND PRAYER RESPONSE “Here As in Heaven” Chris Brown The atmosphere is changing now, for the Spirit of the Lord is here. The evidence is all around that the Spirit of the Lord is here. Overflow in this place, fill our hearts with Your love; Your love surrounds us. You're the reason we came, to encounter Your love, Your love surrounds us. Spirit of God fall fresh on us; we need Your presence. Your kingdom come, Your will be done here as in heaven. A miracle can happen now, for the Spirit of the Lord is here. The evidence is all around that the Spirit of the Lord is here. SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (please join in singing) Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. CLOSING HYMN “We Praise You, O God” Kremser (Please join in singing) We praise You, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before You; we kneel and adore You; We bless Your holy name; glad praises we sing. We worship You, God of our fathers and mothers; Through trial and tempest our guide You have been. When perils o’ertake us, You will not forsake us, And with Your help, O Lord, our struggles we win. With voices united our praises we offer And gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise. With You, Lord, beside us, Your strong arm will guide us. To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise!
