  • In the Middle of 1970, Curtis Mayfield Quit the Impressions and Began One of the Most Groundbreaking and Successful Solo Careers in History
In the middle of 1970, Curtis Mayfield quit the Impressions and began one of the most groundbreaking and successful solo careers in history. Nothing happened to force his hand—no dramatic falling out or heated argument. In his customary seat-of-the-pants way, he simply picked up the phone one evening, called fellow Impression Fred Cash, and said, “Fred, I’m going to try to go on my own and see what I can do. You and Sam [Gooden] can do the same thing. Y’all go on your own and see what you can do.” Fred called Sam and told him the news, and that was it. My father left the group. Fred, Sam, and the Impressions, three of the most important forces in my father’s life for more than a decade, no longer occupied his mind. The boyhood dreams, the endless miles traveled on tour, the lonely nights trying to steal sleep in motel beds, the harmonizing and fraternizing all came to an end. Dad struggled with the decision. For years, the three Impressions were so close that if you saw one of them, you usually saw the other two. They spent more time with each other than they did with their own wives. Yet, my father had the ability to turn off his emotions and make cold, calculated business decisions when he felt it necessary. Recalling this side of him, my brother Tracy says, “You saw a good and evil. The evil part came out when it was about business. I always separated the parent from the businessperson.

As a performer and musician, his resume is so complete that there is a tendency to sit back and marvel at it: virtuoso player, sonic innovator, hit songwriter, wild stage performer, outrageous dresser, sex symbol, and even sensitive guy. But there is also a tendency, possibly because of his overwhelming image, to fail to dig deeper into the music, as Rob Van der Bliek has pointed out.1 In this study, we will look at Hendrix’s music, his performance practice, and its relationship to the mythology that has grown up around him.

  • Jimi Hendrix

  • “Jimi Hendrix As Spiritual Guide” Rev
“Jimi Hendrix as Spiritual Guide” Rev. Don Rollins February 24, 2008 INTRODUCTION Dennis McFann was one of those older boys that your mother told you to stay away from. He had that long hair. He played the organ in that weird band of his. He was probably into drugs, like the rest of those long-haired hippies. You stay away from that boy. My mother was right on all counts, but, unbeknownst to her, Dennis Mc Fann was too late to be the first to corrupt me in the ways of life; my age-cohorts had already seen to that. No, he was not the Great Satan my mother assumed, but Dennis did introduce him to me. Now, keep in mind that my eleven-years-older sister’s musical tastes ran contrary to that of our working-poor parents’ country music, but at least you could identify a discernable melody, understand most of the words and the band members themselves appeared to have been taught the value of personal hygiene: do-wop boys bands; Motown girls bands. (Pelvis gyrations notwithstanding, Mom even admitted that that Elvis fellow was a looker.) Not so, the music of my youth, especially the Great Satan: a black man under an Afro, sporting frilly outfits and burning his guitar was not the kind of role model that most Appalachian progenitors had in mind for their budding adolescent offspring. Who was this man that could spirit away the ears, minds and hearts of rural white boys? Who, indeed. This is the last of three sermons based on the lives and contributions of four African Americans: Billie Holiday, Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby, and, my mother’s chief adversary for her son’s soul, Jimi Hendrix.

VOODOO CHILD 78 (FINAL) HENDRIX WORLDWIDE CATALOG IS NOW UNIVERSAL…Can the world be ready for more Jimi Hendrix? Universal Music certainly believes so as they have recently signed an exclusive administration agreement with Experience Hendrix LLC to manage the catalog of Jimi Hendrix’s music encompassing all territories throughout the world outside the United States. In that global realm, UMPG will represent the catalogue for all commercial opportunities including synchronization licensing for Motion Pictures, TV, Advertising and other mediums. The five-year contract moves the management from Sony ATV, which had managed the catalog since 1998. Upon making the announcement Renzer, Chairman/ CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) commented, "We are so honored that Experience Hendrix has chosen Universal Music Publishing Group to represent their iconic catalogue. Jimi Hendrix's catalogues represents the work of one of the premiere artists of our time and we look forward to working closely with the Hendrix family in representing these amazing songs". Janie L Hendrix President/CEO of Experience Hendrix commented: "We are excited about working with David Renzer and the UMPG staff. Our beloved Jimi has long been recognized as the greatest guitarist ever and the most amazing performer in music history. His ability to expand the frontiers of composition with an almost supernatural sense of melody and rhythm coupled with his truly poetic lyricism has made his catalogue of songs one of the true cornerstones of musical art foreach successive generation. His matchless skill, creativity and imagination on the guitar continue to give those who have come after him an elusive standard to strive for.
