Armbruster1 Two new ancistrin genera and species are described from main channels and tributaries of the upper Orinoco River in Amazonas, Venezuela. Micracanthicus vandragti is black with white spots and distinguished by its small body-size, large gas-bladder capsules, and highly protrusible mandibles with short tooth cups and five to eight long teeth per tooth cup. The known range of Micracanthicus vandragti is restricted to the lower Ventuari River and portions of the Orinoco River near its rocky, anastomose confluence with the Ventuari River. Soromonichthys stearleyi is green with small yellow-gold spots on the head and thin vertical bars on the body and has long dentary and premaxillary tooth cups with 39–69 teeth per tooth cup. It is distinguished by its coloration and by its unique pattern of plate loss on the snout: plates absent from mesethmoid surface and anteriormost margin of snout. Soromonichthys stearleyi is known only from Soromoni Creek, a northern tributary of the upper Orinoco draining southern slopes of Mount Duida. Lefebvre Masters of Science Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The suckermouth armoured catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) are a diverse group of predominantly detritivorous fishes inhabiting rivers of South and Central America. Their distinct jaws are specialized for scraping a wide range of substrate. Though it is hypothesized that specialization of loricariid feeding morphology may have played a role in their diversification, little is known about the ecological and evolutionary processes involved. The present study quantifies variation in jaw functional traits and body morphology in a phylogenetic context. Morphological variation was compared to species’ relative position in assemblage isotope space (for both δ13C and δ15N) to test for correlations between diet and feeding morphology. Results show that although jaw functional traits are decoupled from body morphology, both are correlated with δ13C values. Partitioning of terrestrial and aquatic resources can be explained by both jaw functional traits and body morphology, however further partitioning of diet is only attributed to the former. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Nathan K. Part II: Fish types inventoried after 25 April 1944 (Pisces). Spixiana 34 (2): 233-288. Part I of the ichthyological type catalogue of the ZSM (Neumann 2006) reviewed the historic “Old Collection”, of which types were apparently lost in the Second World War. Part II refers to type material physically available in ZSM, including historic types saved and re-inventoried. Rebuilding the ichthyological collection after the war, Otto Schindler received with the so-called “Kähsbauer Donations” historic fish specimens from the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW). Among them are types from the Natterer and Thayer expeditions to Brazil, from the Hase- man expeditions to South America and from Steindachner’s late Brazil expedition in 1903. As far as possible, exchanged specimens were critically reviewed, traced to original lots and compared with NMW acquisition entries for unambiguous identification. Two new monogenoidean species of Unilatus Mizelle & Kritsky, 1967 found in the gills of loricariids in the Lower Xingu-Iriri rivers are described: Unilatus humboldtii sp. nov. from Baryancistrus niveatus (Castelnau, 1855), Panaque armbrusteri Lujan, Hidalgo & Stewart, 2010, Pseudacanthicus sp. (type-host), and Scobinancistrus aureatus Burgess, 1994; and Unilatus luciarappae sp. nov. from P. armbrusteri. Unilatus humboldtii sp. nov. is distinguished from other congeneric species due to its anterior anchor with well-developed superficial root with depressed or truncated distal portion, and inconspicuous or reduced deep root; anterior bar with posteromedial projection; hooks of pair 1 with dilated shaft comprising 2/3 of the hook length; spiraled male copulatory organ with approximately 16–18 counterclockwise loops. Unilatus luciarappae sp. nov. is characterized by having anterior anchor with well-developed superficial root and reduced deep root, slightly curved shaft, elongated, slightly curved, and tapered point; spiraled MCO with approximately 18–19 counterclockwise loops, with median distal bulbous portion and remaining portion tapered and elongated, comprising 1/4 of the body length; and accessory piece comprising approximately 2/3 of the MCO length. -

Ballen1 and Richard P. Vari2 The loricariid catfish genus Dolichancistrus is reviewed and four species recognized. Species of Dolichancistrus are distinguished from each other by the degree of development of the pectoral-fin spine, the form of the distal margin of the pelvic fin, the relative size and form of the cheek plates, the pattern of odontodes along the margin of the snout, the presence versus absence of a buccal papilla at the premaxillary symphysis, and the relative lengths of the anal- versus pelvic-spines. Dolichancistrus atratoensis is known from the río Atrato system and the río Cubarradó on the Pacific versant of Colombia; D. carnegiei occurs in the eastern río Magdalena basin in the departments of Boyacá and Santander, Colombia; D. cobrensis inhabits southern tributaries of the Lago Maracaibo basin in Colombia and Venezuela along with some highland rivers of the Cordillera de Mérida in Venezuela draining into the río Orinoco system; and D. fuesslii is known from the Andean piedmont portions of the río Meta basin in the western río Orinoco system. Pseudancistrus pediculatus is considered a junior synonym of Ancistrus fuesslii. Chaetostomus setosus previously assigned to Dolichancistrus, was found to lack features characteristic of its putative congeners and is rather more closely related to other members of Chaetostoma group. Consequently, the species is herein considered as incertae sedis within that group. Dolichancistrus is diagnosed, a key is provided to the members of the genus, and diagnoses and redescriptions are provided for all of the recognized species. -

Regional Biosecurity Plan for Micronesia and Hawaii Volume II Prepared by: University of Guam and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community 2014 This plan was prepared in conjunction with representatives from various countries at various levels including federal/national, state/territory/commonwealth, industry, and non-governmental organizations and was generously funded and supported by the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) and Headquarters, Marine Corps. MBP PHASE 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY NISC Executive Summary Prepared by the National Invasive Species Council On March 7th, 2007 the U.S. Department of Navy (DoN) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an “Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (OEIS)” for the “Relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Forces to Guam, Enhancement of Infrastructure and Logistic Capabilities, Improvement of Pier/Waterfront Infrastructure for Transient U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) at Naval Base Guam, and Placement of a U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Task Force in Guam”. This relocation effort has become known as the “build-up”. In considering some of the environmental consequences of such an undertaking, it quickly became apparent that one of the primary regional concerns of such a move was the potential for unintentional movement of invasive species to new locations in the region. Guam has already suffered the eradication of many of its native species due to the introduction of brown treesnakes and many other invasive plants, animals and pathogens cause tremendous damage to its economy and marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. DoN, in consultation and concurrence with relevant federal and territorial regulatory entities, determined that there was a need to develop a biosecurity plan to address these concerns.
