Hiro Club News For your cultural life in Hiroshima おにぎり Onigiri (Rice Balls) Onigiri are Japan’s most popular picnic food. They are eaten with the fingers. They are made by firmly moding rice into triangular, round, or cylindrical shapes in the palms of the hands. Sometimes a mold is used to press the rice into shape. In the Kanto area (east Japan) triangular rice balls were standard, while in Kansai (west Japan) they were usually cylindrical. Many kinds of onigiri are sold by boxed-lunch vendors and at convenience stores and onigiri specialty shops. They’re one of the popular lunches. (Abstracted from The Japanese-English Dictionary for Conversation about Japan, p. 107, Obunsha) The standard ingredients people used to put in onigiri were pickled plums (umeboshi), dried shaved bonito (okaka), and broiled salted salmon (sake). Then, they were wrapped with a dried piece of seaweed (nori). But now, various kinds of ingredients such as tuna with mayonnaise and broiled beef are put in onigiri. Rice goes well with almost all food because the rice itself has no special taste. Yakionigiri is also a popular onigiri. The surface of a rice ball is covered with soy sauce and toasted until it is golden brown. Hot, freshly toasted onigiri smell great and are a popular thing to eat after drinking. Having a picnic under cherry trees is a Japan’s typical picnic style in Japan. The best season to have a picnic is now! Why not go outside with some onigiri and enjoy spring in Japan? Losing Two Daughters in the A-bombing Makie Fujii 1 Situation before the A-bombing My family lived on the river bank about 100 meters east of the Yokogawa Bridge at 1-chome in Yokogawa-cho. At that time, my family consisted of four members: my husband (Kiyoshi) and me, our three-year-old eldest daughter Kazuko, and a half-year-old youngest daughter Kiyomi. Before the A-bombing, whenever a red alert siren went off, I would run into a pit that had been dug underground, taking my two children with me. This happened repeatedly for many days and is still vivid in my memory. Damage from the A-bombing On the morning of August 6, my husband took the day off from work and was staying home because he had received call-up papers. Since the red alert had been canceled, my children and I were playing tag upstairs in our house. Suddenly, a burning fireball flew into our house with a thud from a window. At that moment, my children and I started falling down like being sucked into an abyss. My eldest daughter was shouting under my feet, “Mommy, I’m here. Mommy, I’m here.” “Kazuko-chan, mommy will get you out of there. Hang on,” I called out to her but couldn’t move even my neck because every part of my body was stuck between walls and various things in our house. Before long, I heard my husband calling my name from above. “Makieeee, where are you? Makieeee…,” while he seemed to be walking around in search of us.

hiro club news For your cultural life in Hiroshima 招き猫 Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) Ornamental maneki-neko (beckoning cats) have been popular since the middle of the Edo period (1603- 1868) as good-luck talismans. Made of clay, porcelain, papier-mâché, wood, or plastic, they are believed to bring good business to shops and restaurants. They are also often displayed as a sign of welcome in the genkan entrance of houses. The cat is sitting, but its tail is usually not visible. One of its paws is lifted close to its ear. It is beckoning in Japanese style – with the palm facing outward rather than the palm-inward style of Western beckoning. There are two basic types: cats with the right-paw raised are believed to bring good luck in business finance; those with the left-paw raised are for welcoming customers or guests. The length of the paw varies – the longer it is, the greater the reach of fortune. There are a few with both paws raised, but many people steer clear of them saying that it’s not wise to be too greedy. Many maneki-neko are based on a tortoiseshell cat appearance and are painted white with red ears and collars, a color connected with the good health of children (Abstracted from 『ニッポン風物詩』, p63, IBC パブリッシング). For your cultural life in Hiroshima 節分 Setsubun It is a bean-throwing (mame-maki) ceremony. The word setsubun was originally applied to the day preceding the traditional beginning of the day before the first day of spring (risshun), which falls on February 3rd or 4th. That is just the time when the lowest temperatures are recorded. After setsubun signs of spring gradually begin to appear. On the evening of February 3, people scatter handfuls of parched soybeans inside and outside the house to chase demons out and summon good luck. As the beans are thrown, good luck is invited in and bad luck driven out with much shouting and noise, and cries of “Fuku-wa-uchi, Oni-wa-soto” (=In with good luck, out with the devil). In some area they apparently string the heads of grilled sardine on a branch and fix it to the door. That’s also done to drive off evil spirits. It is also customary to eat the same number of beans as one’s age and to offer a prayer for good fortune at home. In some shrine and temple compounds, well-known personalities such as sumo wrestlers are invited to scatter the beans of the good luck for all present. Usually, these people are those born under that year’s zodiac sign. Bean-throwing ceremonies will also be held at some shrines such as Gokoku Shrine and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hiroshima City (see the Seasonal Event Information section for more information).

HIRO CLUB NEWS No. 287 さくら Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) The flower most closely associated with Japan would be the cherry blossom. There’s nothing so beautiful as a mass of delicate pink petals in full bloom under a blue spring sky. The cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan, and the word ‘flower’ alone can often mean cherry blossom. For example, hanagumori (literally ‘flower-cloudy’) refers to cloudy skies during the blossoming season. And hanabie (literally ‘flower-chill’) is a late cold spell when the flowers are already in bloom. Then there’s hanami (literally ‘flower-viewing’), to enjoying the cherry blossoms. Towards the end of March, the progress of the cherry-blossom front called “Sakura-zensen” is mentioned on TV and in newspapers. There are many varieties of blossoming cherry. Those planted in parks and along dikes are usually someiyoshino. And most of those that grow wild in the mountains are yamazakura. There are also ‘weeping’ and ‘double-flowered’ types. Colors range from the palest pink to a reddish shade. (Abstracted from The Japanese-English Dictionary for Conversation about Japanese, pp. 282-283, Obunsha) In Hiroshima City, there are also beautiful spots filled with full bloomed cherry blossoms. ‘Hiroshima Ebayama-zakura’ is a wild cherry tree grown on Mt. Ebayama in Hiroshima City. Usually, most wild cherry trees have blossoms with five petals. However, ebayama-zakura have blossoms which consist of five to thirteen petals. This is a quite rare type of cherry tree, so in 1996, it was designated as one of Hiroshima City’s protected species.
