Synopsis Act I Legendary Peking. Outside the Imperial Palace, a mandarin reads an edict to the crowd: Any prince seeking to marry Princess Turandot must answer three riddles. If he fails, he will die. The most recent suitor, the Prince of Persia, is to be executed at the moon’s rising. Among the onlookers are the slave girl Liù, her aged master, and the young Calàf, who recognizes the old man as his long-lost father, Timur, vanquished King of Tartary. Only Liù has remained faithful to the king, and when Calàf asks her why, she replies that once, long ago, Calàf smiled at her. The mob cries for blood but greets the rising moon with a sudden fearful reverence. As the Prince of Persia goes to his death, the crowd calls upon the princess to spare him. Turandot appears in her palace and wordlessly orders the execution to proceed. Transfixed by the beauty of the unattainable princess, Calàf decides to win her, to the horror of Liù and Timur. Three ministers of state, Ping, Pang, and Pong, appear and also try to discourage him, but Calàf is unmoved. He reassures Liù, then strikes the gong that announces a new suitor. Act II Within their private apartments, Ping, Pang, and Pong lament Turandot’s bloody reign, hoping that love will conquer her and restore peace. Their thoughts wander to their peaceful country homes, but the noise of the crowd gathering to witness the riddle challenge calls them back to reality. In the royal throne room, the old emperor asks Calàf to reconsider, but the young man will not be dissuaded.

FAIRTILE Abstract: This study of the ending customarily appended to Giacomo Puccini's unfinished Turandot offers a new perspective on its genesis: that of its principal creator, Franco Alfano. Following Puccini's death in November 1924, the press overstated the amount of music that he had completed for the opera's climactic duet and final scene.

  • Berio V Alfano Paper
Putting Puccini to Rest: A comparison of Alfano and Berio’s finales to Turandot By Matt Pollock On April 25 th , 1926 Giacomo Puccini’s final opera ‘Turandot’ was premiered at La Scala in Milan. At the height of the dramatic third act, at which point Liù kills herself and is carried offstage, conductor Arturo Toscanini laid down his baton and announced to the crowd in a quiet voice that at this point in the composition of the opera the composer had died, and the curtain lowered on the stage. 1 Accounts vary as to what exactly Toscanini said, but Puccini’s wishes had been made clear by his own words: “If I do not succeed in finishing the opera, someone will come to the front of the stage and say, ‘Puccini composed as far as this, then he died.’” 2 The opera was a major success, but many felt that for Turandot to truly come to life, the final duet between the Prince and Turandot would need to be completed. Little did the public know, two versions by the Italian composer Franco Alfano had already been composed, but neither held enough validity in Toscanini’s mind that he chose to end it with Puccini’s contribution rather than tarnish his old friend’s image. 3 A group of close friends of Puccini’s had gathered including Toscanini, the librettist Adami, several members of the Ricordi publishing group, and Puccini’s son Tonio. 4 A few major composers were discussed as possible candidates, specifically Puccini’s contemporaries Riccardo Zandonai and Franco Vittadini , but Tonio objected on the grounds of their popular status in the 1 Ashbrook and Powers, Puccini’s Turandot p.

UNITEL and CLASSICA present PLÁCIDO DOMINGO IN DE BERGERAC ran PLÁCIDO DOMINGO IN DE BERGERAC BY FRANCO ALFANO ran omingo creates the magical illusion that Alfano wrote the role especially for him: Domingo de “ Bergerac“ (review of the premiere in the Madrid daily ABC). Plácido Domingo‘s triumph in Valencia‘s stunningly futuristic theater El Palau de les Arts in February 2007 echoes the overwhelmingly positive reception he obtained at the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in this role. A coproduction of the New York, London and Valencia houses, Franco Alfano‘s little-known 1936 opera “Cyrano de Bergerac“ has been reawakened to life by the great Spanish tenor. Although Alfano (1875–1954) enjoyed a long and prolific career as an opera composer, he is known today above all for having completed Puccini‘s “Turandot”. His earlier works not surprisingly reflect Puccini‘s verismo style, Music by Franco Alfano but his later works – including „Cyrano de Bergerac“ – are Conductor Patrick Fournillier clearly inspired by Debussy, Ravel and Strauss. Opulent Chorus Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana scoring and colorful orchestral effects elegantly underscore Chorus Master Francesc Perales the tragic story based on Rostand‘s famous drama of 1897, Orchestra Orquestra de la which achieved international celebrity in the Oscar-nominated Comunitat Valenciana 1990 film adaptation with Gérard Depardieu. Alfano‘s work Music Director Lorin Maazel faithfully relates the story of the large-nosed soldier poet who pines for the beautiful Roxane and writes her glowing love Cyrano Plácido Domingo letters in the name of his fellow soldier Christian, who also Roxane Sondra Radvanovsky loves her.
