Everything Began with the Movie Moulin Rouge (2001)
Introduction Everything began with the movie Moulin Rouge (2001). Since I was so obsessed with this hit film, I couldn’t but want to know more about this particular genre - musical films. Then I started to trace the history of this genre back to Hollywood’s classical musical films. It’s interesting that musical films have undergone several revivals and are usually regarded as the products of escapism. Watching those protagonists singing and dancing happily, the audience can daydream freely and forget about the cruel reality. What are the aesthetic artifices of this genre so enchanting that it always catches the eye of audience generation after generation? What kinds of ideal life do these musical films try to depict? Do they (musical films) merely escape from reality or, as a matter of fact, implicitly criticize the society? In regard to the musical films produced by Hollywood, what do they reflect the contemporary social, political or economic situations? To investigate these aspects, I start my research project on the Hollywood musical film genre from the 1950s (its Classical Period) to 2002. However, some people might wonder that among all those Hollywood movies, what is so special about the musical films that makes them distinguish from the other types of movies? On the one hand, the musical film genre indeed has several important contributions to the Hollywood industry, and its influence never wanes even until today. In need of specialty for musical film production, many talented professional dancers and singers thus get the chances to join in Hollywood and prove themselves as great actors (actresses), too. -

Studies in Musical Theatre , 1 (3). pp. 275-292. White Rose Research Online [email protected] ARTICLE NAME Billy Elliot The Musical: Visual representations of working-class masculinity and the all-singing, all-dancing bo[d]y. AUTHOR NAME GEORGE RODOSTHENOUS ABSTRACT According to Cynthia Weber, „[d]ance is commonly thought of as liberating, transformative, empowering, transgressive, and even as dangerous‟. Yet, ballet as a masculine activity, it still remains a suspect phenomenon. This paper will challenge this claim in relation to Billy Elliot the Musical and its critical reception. The transformation of the visual representation of the human body on stage (from an ephemeral existence to a timeless work of art) will be discussed and analysed vis-a-vis the text and sub-texts of Stephen Daldry's direction and Peter Darling‟s choreography. The dynamics of working-class masculinity will be contextualised within the framework of the family, the older female, the community, the self and the act of dancing itself. KEYWORDS Billy Elliot, masculinity, male dancers, dancing musicals, representations of the male AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY George Rodosthenous is Lecturer in Music Theatre at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries of the University of Leeds. -
Names of Companion Animals: Rovers in the Onomasticon?
Names of Companion Animals: Rovers in the Onomasticon? Katharina Leibring Sweden Abstract The names of companion animals could, from the outside, be seen as freely roving elements in the onomasticon. There are few or no legal restrictions on their given names, so, in theory, a dog, or a cat, could have any kind of word creation as a name. Dogs and other companion animals play a larger role as family members in many countries than ever before, something that possibly has an influence on their names. My major aim here is to establish, from a socio-onomastic viewpoint, whether animal owners in general take advantage of this apparent liberty, or whether they restrict themselves to using otherwise well-established name groups, e.g. anthroponyms or older zoonyms. The first part of the study is devoted to dog names. A large corpus of such names used in Sweden during the last decade is examined. The features of the most popular names given to dogs are studied and their relationship to popular baby names is discussed. This is combined with a study of dog names attested only once in the corpus. The results are supplemented with some findings on general attitudes to names of companion animals, taken from a recent questionnaire survey of animal owners. * * * Introduction It is well known that dogs and other companion animals play an important role as family members in many countries today (Thorsen 2001, Leibring 2015a, Saarelma 2012).1 This close relationship could and does have an influence on their names – more popular anthroponyms are now used for animals than seems to have been the case in earlier times. -

Examining dance on screen, influenced by storytelling, camera technology and editing. Course Description Ever since Edward Muybridge created the first moving image, dancers and dance-makers have been experimenting with new ways of capturing motion. Today, this has led to dance occupying a central place in almost all media: films, television, advertising, the internet and other digital media. In this course, students will investigate the history of dance on film both in theory and practice, situating seminal works within their greater socio-cultural milieu as well as investigating the impact of choreography, narrative, camera technology, editing styles, and music. Through substantive analysis of course readings and assigned media, students will advance critical reading, writing and analytic skills. For their final project, students will use personal media devices to make their own short dance film and write a paper that reflects on the creative process. -
