The basic numerical groups are as follows: 10000 Series - Corvair 11000 Series - Chevy II 13000 Series - Chevelle 15000 serie~}_ Chevrolet 16000 Series 19000 Series - Corvette While the complete vehicle identification numbers are new in appearance, they continue to include model number, year of manufacture, plant desig nation, and sequence number. Example: #164395Fl00500 (16439) (5) (F) 100500 Impala V-B 4-Dr. 1965 Flint 500th 1965 Chevrolet Sport Sedan Built at Flint The model deSignation will always consist of five digits with the first two denoting vehicle series, the third indicating base engine equipment, and the remaining two numbers identifying body style. When the third digit of the model number is odd (1,3,5,7) the base engine is an L-4 or L-6. When the third number is even (2,4,6 or B), the base engine is a V-B. ~: If the model number in the example were 16339, it would be the same vehicle with an L-6 engine. Actual model number, engine identification, and body style can be com pared from model to model in the charts following this general infor mation. The following vehicles will each have their own continuous sequence of identification numbers starting with 100001 at each assembly plant: Chevrolet Chevy II Greenbrier Chevelle Corvair Corvette PASSENGER CAR IDENTIFICATION NUMBER LOCATION Identification numbers are stamped on a plate located as follows: Chevrolet Left front body hinge pillar Chevelle " II " " " Chevy II " " " " " Corvair Engine compartment rear rail -8 PASSENGER CAR IDENTIFICATION NUMBER LOCATION (Cont i nued) ~} Greenbrier Left front lock pillar Corvette Rear side of right hand pillar brace, under glove box.

The Little Car that Did Nothing Right: the 1972 Lordstown Assembly Strike, the Chevrolet Vega, and the Unraveling of Growth Economics Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By By Joseph A. Arena, B.A. History, Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee Kevin Boyle, Advisor Paula Baker Mansel Blackford Copyright by Joseph A. Arena 2009 Abstract In March 1972, the United Automobile Workers (UAW) struck for eighteen days at the General Motors (GM) assembly complex in Lordstown, Ohio. Previous historical studies have focused on the origins of labor-management conflict at the factory. Drawing upon documents from the UAW’s archives, the business press, and automotive industry trade publications, this thesis contextualizes the strike by linking shop floor conditions with GM’s business strategy, the Nixon administration’s economic policy, and working class life in the Mahoning Valley. The UAW and GM saw the Chevrolet Vega, manufactured at Lordstown, as the domestic industry’s best response to import competition. But bureaucratic imperatives, especially within GM’s management structure, encouraged a series of confrontations between the company and union that culminated in the strike and undermined the Vega’s viability. The thesis expands our understanding of an iconic moment in American labor history and illuminates the ongoing problems confronting the U.S. automobile industry. ii Dedicated to My Mother and Father iii Acknowledgements No historian works alone.
