  • How Theme Park Rides Adapted the Shooting Gallery
How Theme Park Rides Adapted the Shooting Gallery Bobby Schweizer Texas Tech University Lubbock, Texas United States [email protected] Keywords Shooting galleries, theme parks, midways, arcades, media archeology EXTENDED ABSTRACT In 1998, Walt Disney Imagineering unveiled a new ride for Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida—one that introduced a new form of interactivity previously unseen in their parks. Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin was a hybrid attraction: part dark ride, part shooting gallery. Riders boarded Omnimover vehicles armed with two blaster guns mounted to the dashboard that could be aimed with a limited range of motion to defeat the Emperor Zurg. An LCD screen tallied the score as passengers spun their vehicles to position themselves to shoot at “Z” marked targets throughout the blacklight neon ride. With the creation of this attraction and, most recently the opening of the Star Wars Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, the dark ride has seemingly adopted the values of videogame interactivity. Yet, while a comparison to videogames seems obvious, this transition did not happen overnight and was, in fact, part of a long tradition of target shooting forms of play. The shooting gallery has always been a perennial entertainment form seen in fairs, carnivals, and amusement parks across the globe (Adams 1991). Emerging out of military and marksmanship traditions, these games emulate the practice of real target shooting in which a marksman stands at one end of a booth or range while shooting pellets at stationary or moving targets (Tucker and Tucker 2014). Played for prizes or bragging right, the simple act of aiming and pulling a trigger has undergone technological adaptations to automate the process, place it into new venues, and create new feedback loops that construct new player experiences intended for social interaction.

  • Saturday April 16Th - Magic Kingdom Park Hours: 9:00Am - 12:00Pm
Saturday April 16th - Magic Kingdom Park Hours: 9:00am - 12:00pm Welcome to the Most Magical Place on Earth! This is by far our favorite of the four Walt Disney World Theme Parks, and after today you will understand why! We have created a plan that covers a great deal of ground for you and hope that you will feel the magic from the moment you enter! Enjoy the sights and sounds of this amazing theme park and be sure to take a few photos in front of the iconic Cinderella Castle! *Note: If your day gets off track from the itinerary times, simply ignore the actual times and do the attractions in the order in which they are listed. Magic Kingdom TIP: If the kids would like to meet Anna and Elsa at Fairytale Hall and you do not have a FastPass+ you will need to report to the Magic Kingdom at least 45 minutes prior to park opening. Be there early! We strongly recommend arriving to the park at 30 minutes before and running straight to the Fairytale Hall with your entire party as soon as the rope drops. 9:13am - Space Mountain (69) - 3,2,1… BLAST OFF on this amazing roller coaster that will take you out of this world (in the DARK)! *Note: 44” height requirement. You can use the Rider Switch option if you would both like to ride and the kids cannot ride or do not want to. 9:24am - Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover (71) - a quiet ride lasting 10 minutes that takes you through Tomorrowland on a vehicle that has no moving parts because it uses a linear induction motor! 9:38am - Tomorrowland Speedway (68) - Put the pedal to the metal while you cruise around this scenic mini roadway! *Note: 38” height requirement.

  • You're on Stage at Disney World: an Analysis of Main
YOU’RE ON STAGE AT DISNEY WORLD: AN ANALYSIS OF MAIN STREET, USA IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM by MARISA N. SCALERA (Under the Direction of Henry Methvin) ABSTRACT This thesis explores the image and physical characteristics of Main Street, USA in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Florida. The first chapter explores the questions: What thematic roles does Main Street, USA play within the Magic Kingdom, within our collective national consciousness, and across the world? The second chapter asks: How does the visitor relate to Main Street, USA? How do these interactions change throughout the course of a day? The third chapter asks: What are the defining physical characteristics of Main Street, USA? How do these characteristics influence the experience of the visitor? All three chapters use the metaphor of a show that takes place daily on the Main Street, USA stage and in which visitors are both audience and actors. Through this examination both reader and author will gain a better understanding of the composition of Main Street, USA and insight into this undeniable design force. Disneyland, 1955: The Place That Was Also a TV Show he opening-r openings-of the new amusement park in Southern California did not go well. On July 13, a Wednes 1- day, the day of a private thirtieth anniversary party for Walt and Lil, Mrs. Disney herself was discovered sweeping the deck of the riverboat Mark Twain as the first guests arrived for a twilight shake down cruise. On Thursday and Friday, during gala pre-opening trib utes to Disney film music at the Hollywood Bowl, workmen back in Anaheim, some twenty-three miles away, struggled to finish paving the streets that would soon lead to Fantasyland,Adventureland, Fron tierland, and Tomorrowland; last-minute strikes had compelled the builders to haul in asphalt all the way from San Diego.' The invitation-only press preview and dedication, broadcast over a coast-to-coast TV hookup on July 17, was a disaster from start to finish. At dawn, with carpenters and plumbers still working against the clock, traffic on the freeway was backed up for seven miles, and gridlock prevailed on the secondary roads surrounding the former orange grove along Harbor Boulevard. Studio publicists had issued twenty thousand tickets to reporters, local dignitaries, Disney em ployees, corporate investors, and Hollywood stars-including Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Lana Turner, Danny Thomas (from the new television elite), and Frank Sinatra. But by mid-morning more than thirty thousand people were already packed inside the earthen 88 /izlSeenon TV Disneyland, 1955 89 berm that was supposed to seal off Disney’s domain from the cares The Dateline Disnqland special had “captured some fun and fantasy, of the outside world.
