NANCY DREW CLUES Edward Stratemeyer created Nancy Drew. The first three books in the series: The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase , and The Bungalow Mystery all debuted on April 28, 1930. Besides blue, Nancy Drew’s car has been yellow, green, and even maroon. Carolyn Keene was a pseudonym for many ghostwriters over the years. In the early books, Nancy often wore glamorous heels and fashionable frocks while chasing suspects, climbing ladders, and sleuthing for “ghosts” in secret passageways. Nancy Drew never takes money for her detective work—she is an amateur detective after all! Since 1930, Nancy Drew has solved over 500 cases! Pretty good for an 85+ year old sleuth. In the classic Nancy Drew series, volumes 1-56 from 1930 to 1979, Nancy Drew never solved murders. Nancy Drew’s chum George Fayne’s catch phrase was “Hypers!” (Like—Wow!) One of Bess Marvin’s favorite foods was a gooey chocolate fudge sundae. Nancy Drew went off to college in a short-lived series, Nancy Drew On Campus . Nancy Drew’s first trip outside the United States was to Canada in the original text of The Message in the Hollow Oak . Nancy Drew packed heat—carrying her father Carson Drew’s revolver in two early mysteries— the 1930 text of The Hidden Staircase and the 1931 text of The Secret at Shadow Ranch (she shot a lynx.) In contrast, in the 1965 Nancy Drew book, The Spider Sapphire Mystery , when confronted with guns, Nancy and her pal George Fayne tossed them into a brook. Some famous Nancy Drew fans include: Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O’Connor, First Lady Laura Bush, TV Personalities Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters, Mystery Authors Nancy Pickard, Sara Paretsky, P.M. Abstract MERRILL, ASHLEY CHRISTINE. The Evolution of Nancy Drew, Cultural Icon: Readers, Writers, and Fanfiction Authors. (Under the direction of Mary Helen Thuente.) Nancy Drew is widely recognized as an influential American cultural icon. In this paper I make a detailed examination of Nancy's initial characterization as girl sleuth in the first ten books of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, published in the 1930s. I spend another chapter examining the initial volumes of later Nancy Drew series books, specifically the 1960s rewritten texts, the 1980s-90s Nancy Drew Files series, and the contemporary Girl Detective series. My penultimate chapter discusses Nancy Drew as realized in fanfiction, or stories written by readers and fans. My emphasis is on explaining Nancy's appeal as a cultural icon and the ways fanfiction authors reinvent and appropriate that icon for their own purposes in stories. To this end I cite fanfic writers and readers' response to why they read and write Nancy Drew fanfiction, and I analyze the content and function of a sample of stories written by Nancy Drew fans. I conclude that Nancy's appeal and the basis of her status as cultural icon is due to her unique nature as a figure frozen in transition between adolescence and adulthood, along with her more conventionally admirable traits. Her Everygirl appearance when removed from that unique matrix makes her extremely adaptable to readers for their own purposes, both within the context of fanfiction and without. GREELEYVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NAMED AS A RECIPIENT OF A LIBRARY GRANT FROM THE LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION FOR AMERICA’S LIBRARIES Tuesday, May 18, 2021 Greeleyville Elementary School was one of 205 schools from 43 states across the country to receive a $5,000.00 grant through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. Mrs. Laura Bush joined Kelly Clarkson on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” to announce that the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries awarded more than $1 million in library grants this year. Inspired by the Laura Bush Foundation, H-E-B surprised 15 Texas-based Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries grant recipients with an additional gift totaling $100,000. Scholastic Books also provided the 34 teachers and educators in the virtual audience with money to purchase books for their schools and students. The grant recipients’ library collections are outdated, averaging approximately 20 years old. Many of the libraries will use the funds to update their collection, offer more dual language titles, and provide books focused on diversity and inclusivity. “There are many students who don’t have books at home, so having access to a library at school is essential,” Mrs. Bush said. “With the grants, school libraries across the nation can restock and update their collections providing opportunities for students for years to come.” “I was very excited when we received the notification of the Laura Bush Grant award because it will afford us the opportunity to expand our fiction collection and provide additional diverse books to reflect our student population and student interest.” Berlinda N.

At the time this research project was conceived, there were not many psychoanalytic and queer feminist critical literacy research studies concerned with how LGBTQ students were using literacy in relation to self-care and trauma caused by anti-LGBTQ oppression. Also LGBTQ students were frequently being characterized in positivist anti-oppression research as one-dimensional victims who were not exercising any agency, while being told by lesbian and gay celebrities to tolerate unlivable conditions at their schools because a better life in a LGBTQ enclave awaits them. Disempowering research, the unlivable lives LGBTQ students are expected to endure in schools and the need for further queer feminist research into specifically queer and trans critical literacies served as the central motivations for the undertaking of this project. This research study focuses on the ways in which LGBTQ students have come to understand the relationships between reading novels, self-care, trauma, and the development of a queer critical literacy. Narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and creative analytic practices were the methodologies used in this project.

Accessory to Murder: A Lesbian Masquerade Rob K. Baum ABSTRACT Mabel Maney parodies Fifties-era "girl detective" Nancy Drew with lesbian Nancy Clue, mocking the original series' insistence upon heteronormativity while maintaining Keene's luxuriously white, upper class sanctity. This article explores Maney's comic structure from Freudian "dress-up" and professional disguise to lesbian masquerade, demonstrating their ideological difference from gay camp - one queer commentary has repeatedly confused. Maney's conflation of the disparate motives of lesbian masquerade and gay camp lead to her abandonment of lesbian feminist readers. The Library’s holdings include more than 70 million pages of textual materials from the Bush (43) presidency, from staff files to National Security Council documents to special commission files. The Library also is the repository for condolence mail received by the State Department after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It additionally houses the George W. Bush Presidential records in response to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests listed in Attachment A. This material, consisting of 8,072 pages, 3,159 assets, and 1 video clip, has been reviewed for the six PRA Presidential restrictive categories, including confidential communications requesting or submitting advice (P5) and material related to appointments to federal office (P2), as they were eased by President George W. Bush on November 15, 2010. These records were also reviewed for all applicable FOIA exemptions. As a result of this review, 4,086 pages and 1,470 assets in whole and 582 pages and 186 assets in part have been restricted. Therefore, NARA is proposing to open the remaining 3,404 pages, 1,503 assets, and 1 video clip in whole and 582 pages and 186 assets in part that do not require closure under 44 U.S.C. § 2204. The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is the 13th presidential library administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and houses the official records and artifacts of the presidency of George W. Bush. Using the archives as its foundation, the Bush Library and Museum provides visitors an opportunity to better understand critical public policy issues and gain insight into how the U.S. government works to serve the needs of the American people. Also administered by NARA, the museum exhibit provides personal insight and historical perspective to a consequential period in American history. Exhibit designers sought to bring the story of President and Mrs. Bush’s leadership to life for visitors by highlighting the principles they followed when making key decisions.
