In the lobby post-show, composer Jeanine Tesori is surrounded by friends. “Where’s Sarah,” she asks a young woman as I approach, “I thought she was coming.” “She’s in the theatre,” her friend replies, “She can’t move—she’s overcome.” I know the feeling. Astonishing it was! Despite an incredible score, a vital script and source, and tremendously relevant themes, no one expected this intimate, deeply personal musical to make it to Broadway. No one dreamed it would become a towering hit, win five Tony Awards (including Best Musical and Best Score), and tour the country to acclaim. For me that night, I knew only one thing. Some day this beautiful musical must come to TheatreWorks.

At HomeHome I met Jeanine Tesori in St. Louis in the fall of 1989. She was a keyboard player in the pit band for At Home the musical Chess. Author Bechdel pointed out that Fun Home “is after all about the toll that this sort of small- mindedness takes on people’s lives.”

If much has changed in America since then, the legacy of prejudice remains a dark presence in our society. I hope Fun Home will help more of us see the light.

INTO THE LIGHT

ctober, 2013, New York’s Public Theater. One of the final previews for Fun Home. Onstage, a father has lost himself, a daughter has found herself; off- Ostage, I have been profoundly moved. When I ask longtime friend Jeanine if we can present the show on the West Coast she replies “I’d love that. Y G A N O

T E R But Kelley, something’s happening! Something truly astonishing.”

I met Jeanine Tesori in St. Louis in the fall of 1989. She was a keyboard player in the pit band for the musical Chess. I’d come to convince her, and then-husband Keith Levenson, to let TheatreWorks produce their new musical Galileo, about the famous astronomer. After a summer stock version in New England, they had sent cassettes around the country seeking development and a full-scale production. We met, I shared my love for Jeanine’s music, our West Coast premiere debuted the next summer with the authors in residence, and a life-long friendship began. Since then we’ve done award- winning productions of Jeanine’s musicals Violet and Caroline, or Change, both, like Galileo, about the soul-stifling effects of intolerance. Fun Home is the next link in this powerful, inspiring chain.

Based on the extraordinary autobiographical graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, Fun Home centers on a father/daughter relationship in a dysfunctional family. Its themes of sexual identity repressed and released are universal. Born in the 1930s, a gay father leads a closeted life, consumed by a debilitating fear that his secret will be discovered. His lesbian daughter, free in the 1970s and ‘80s to be herself without shame or fear, pursues an artistic career, chronicling her own coming out in print. The difference between these two generations is a stark but liberating lesson in the value of personal freedom and the devastating price of prejudice for individuals, for families—for all of us. But in 2013, when the novel was included as a reading requirement for freshmen at the College of Charleston, the South Carolina House of Representatives cut the college's funding in retribution. Author Bechdel pointed out that Fun Home “is after all about the toll that this sort of small- mindedness takes on people’s lives.”

If much has changed in America since then, the legacy of prejudice remains a dark presence in our society. I hope Fun Home will help more of us see the light.
