Nil File No. S.2690 FormB.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY JOSEPH CLANCY, Killaloe, Co.. Clare, formerly Brigade Training Officer, East; dare Brigade. I was born on the 19th June, 1899, in Kilkishen, Co. Glare, and I was the youngest of a family of nine children. My father was a carpenter by trade. Then I finished' at the local national school I spent a short while at the trade with my father until I took it into my head to run away and join the British Army. I was exactly sixteen years and a half when I enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the Munster Fusiliers at Sarsfield Barracks in Limerick. I was sent to Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee, to do my training, but was transferred to Franca after three weeks. Within six weeks of my enlistment I was serving in the trenches in the First Great Wars After being wounded three times I was discharged as medically unfit in July, 1918,, and then came home to Glare on a pension of £2 - 7 - 9. In addition to being awarded the D.C.M.,, I had attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant before being discharged. While: in the British Army I went through all infantry courses except signalling. During my years of service in the British Army I came home on leave on three occasions.

They also kept a few pigs for the own needs. Every night the family would sit around the open hearth fire.

Sir Michael O’Lochlen His Majesty’s Lt. for the County in 1915 resided in Drumconora. Killaloe RIC Barracks 2 Introduction In Jan 1916 Killaloe RIC Barracks (10 RIC) was the Head Quarters of the District, which included Whitegate (4 RIC), Mountshannon (4 RIC),Scariff (7 RIC), Ogonnelloe(3 RIC) and O’Brienbsridge (5 RIC). By late 1920 only Killaloe and O’Briensbridge were still open, as the rest had been burnt down or abandoned.

He lived there until he was 19. His family built a house in Scart, about a mile from Kilkishen. He lived there until he was 33 years then married into the farm of Angela McInerney in Derrymore. His parents were Molly Carmody & Jim McInerney. He had one brother and four sisters. His house in Kilkishen started out as a public house. He recalls a shop in his house run by a woman known as Auntie Mary, (Hargrove). The pub was called McInerneys. His grandfather was John McInerney. His father was born around 1898. He names some of his aunts. His grandmother was Kenna from Ogonolloe. 0:05:22 0:11:31 WAR OF INDEPENDENCE/GLENWOOD AMBUSH - Tom speaks of his father joining the local IRA during the War of Independence. He says he lived next door to Paddy Clancy who was a republican and he heard a lot of his stories. He speaks of Paddys brother Joe, who joined the British army. He recalls a time his father was hunting with Martin Mac, also known as The Neighbour Mac, when they met Joe Clancy, who asked Martin to join the British Army.

Nil File No. S.2369 FormB.S.M.2 STATEMENT OF SEÁN MURNANE, Stonehall, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. dare. (formerly 0/C. 1st Battalion, East Clare Brigade and Quartermaster of that Brigade.) I am a farmer living at the above address and I also hold the post of Rate Collector for the Newmarket area. My farm consists of about 40 acres of fairly good land. I inherited the farm from my father, who had a family of seven children of which I was the youngest. I went to Stonehall National School where I remained until I spent two years in the 6th Standard, being then about 14 or 15 years. On leaving school I assisted on the farm at home and also worked as a general labourer around my own district. My first connection with the national movement began in 1911 when I was enrolled in the I.R.B. by Torn Quinn, Laminagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, a farmer. The enrolment ceremony took place in the middle of a field at night time and another man named James Hassett was sworn in the same night. Though I cannot now recall what business took place at the meetings, I am sure that in the ensuing twelve months or so meetings were held flout once a quarter out in fields in remote parts of the locality.
