  • Ubaldo Inspired by Challenging Upbringing Veteran Righty Motivated
Ubaldo inspired by challenging upbringing Veteran righty motivated to succeed after growing up poor in Dominican Republic By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 08/16/12 10:00 AM ET Outside of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, near the market, lies a hole. Natives refer to the area as Hoyo Caliente, or "Hot Hole." The destitute neighborhood hosts constant foot traffic from market-goers and a high volume of residents within its tight quarters. Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez spent most of his childhood in Hoyo Caliente, which he described as "always crowded," "really poor" and "really dangerous." Every day, Jimenez and the rest of the kids in the project played baseball, sometimes in the front yard, other times in the street. Once in a while, they would play on the roof of a nearby store. Anywhere to escape the harsh reality surrounding them. They didn't have bats and balls at their disposal. There was no Louisville Slugger factory nearby. Rather, in the sweltering heat of the ghetto, the youngsters swung a tree branch at the detached head of a doll. Such ingenuity would make MacGyver proud. "It didn't matter what we used," said the soft-spoken Jimenez in his calm, high-pitched voice. "We were poor; we didn't have a lot of things. ... It was crazy. In the Dominican, all the kids really love baseball. It doesn't matter how you play it." Jimenez's humble beginnings helped shape who he is today: A lanky pitcher who mostly keeps to himself and rarely shows emotion on the field, even though he has experienced the highest peaks and most cavernous valleys that a baseball career can offer.

  • '09 A's Need Better Pitching? Beat Reporter Mychael Urban Answers
A’s News Clips, Tuesday, November 3, 2009 Inbox: Did the '09 A's need better pitching? Beat reporter Mychael Urban answers fans' questions By Mychael Urban / MLB.com Why didn't the A's go after pitching before last season? Also, are they going to re-sign Adam Kennedy? -- Danny S., Alta Loma, Calif. Was pitching Oakland's problem in 2009? I'd argue strongly that it wasn't. Sure, some of the kids took some lumps, but general manager Billy Beane was, in my opinion, very smart to let that happen. Clearly, young pitching is the foundation of Beane's rebuilding project, and had Justin Duchscherer been healthy and had Josh Outman stayed healthy, the A's would have had one of the better rotations in the American League. Even without Duchscherer and Outman, they had a solid rotation. And the bullpen was among the AL's best for most of the year. The major problem in 2009 was the offense's performance in the first half -- and the failures of Matt Holliday and Jason Giambi to provide the kind of production for which they were brought in. That's the way I saw it, anyway. When the offense perked up in the second half, Oakland was a pretty good team. Not great, but certainly good enough to suggest that the team is heading in the right direction. As for Kennedy, who is a free agent, I can't give you an answer with any sort of conviction. I'm sure you've heard that there have been talks between the two sides, and both sides say they're open to a new deal.

  • Tomlin Writes Next Chapter in Comeback Story Right
Tomlin writes next chapter in comeback story Right-hander steps in for Kluber with four-hitter to beat Tigers By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | + 1 COMMENTS DETROIT -- Being stuck in rehab can be akin to being in solitary confinement for a ballplayer. When the monotonous daily exercises are complete, there is little to do, except to wait for the arrival of the next box on the schedule's checklist. For Josh Tomlin, his comeback from preseason shoulder surgery kept him in Arizona for much of this season. For months, long before Friday's complete-game gem in an 8-1 win over the Tigers, the Indians starter tried to stay connected to his team by monitoring as many innings as possible from the desert. "I would watch every single game that we played while I was in Arizona," Tomlin said. "Even rehabbing in Cleveland, I'd watch every game." What Tomlin has accomplished through five outings since rejoining the Major League rotation has been, at least in part, a byproduct of watching from afar. If he could not be on the mound competing, the veteran right-hander wanted to do what he could to study the game, watching opposing batters and focusing on how certain pitchers attacked with specific pitches. Back in Cleveland, while Tomlin worked on strengthening his arm for the season's first four-plus months, Indians manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Mickey Callaway held out hope that the righty would help the team down the stretch. After his win over Detroit, Tomlin improved to 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 32 strikeouts and only three walks since his return.
