Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

The slow death of Everett True: A metacriticism Jeremy Thackray A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2016 1 Abstract This thesis problematises and investigates the role of the popular music critic in Web 2.0 environments. It does so through an act of metacriticism grounded in my experience as an internationally successful popular music critic for major print publications including NME, Rolling Stone, and Melody Maker. The reflective aspect of the metacriticism is triangulated through interviews with other notable music critics, through a dialectical approach to role definition grounded in the literature, and through the ongoing experiment of Collapse Board, a music blogging site I set up to experience the new environment from the “inside”. Popular music critics have customarily been seen as gatekeepers of ‘cool’ and arbiters of taste. The industrial structure of print allowed critics to earn a living from their craft. The print environment was defined by limited outlets and large readerships with limited access to information. In that environment popular music criticism helped mould the ways popular music was received, consumed, and contextualised. This project asks whether the same holds true in Web 2.0 environments in which audiences have access to the same sources of information through which critics formerly derived their knowledge, authority, and influence. The thesis concludes that there are four major roles of relevance to the critic in the new media environments: bespoke criticism, music critic as fan, music criticism as entertainment, and the music critic as ‘firestarter’. -

Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz David García Jocelyn Neal Philip Vandermeer Albin Zak © 2014 Brian Jones ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN JONES: Signifying DIY: Process-Oriented Aesthetics in 1990s Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation posits and demonstrates a framework for analyzing how sound recordings convey meaning in rock—considering how listeners experience recordings, not only as fixed products, but also as sonic evidence of implied actions. I call this framework process-oriented aesthetics, and I define it as a sensibility in which musical meaning is conveyed in a record’s sonic foregrounding of its own production process. In this sensibility, recordings sonically evoke what I call a production myth—a real or imagined backstory, nurtured through the surrounding discourse, that adds meaning to the musical sounds. Production myths encourage listeners to aestheticize practices of musical creation and help facilitate intellectual and creative engagement in listening. The effects of process-oriented aesthetics rely upon the interplay between the nuances of recorded sound and the assumed (or imagined) circumstances of their production. I investigate these aesthetic sensibilities in the music and discourse of 1990s alternative rock and hip-hop. Alternative rock in the 1990s harbored an enduring tension between the small- scale, non-commercial values of its indie roots and the music’s eventual mass-mediated popularity. -

Grunge was one of the big phenomena of the 1990s, although it was largely confined to the United States. Grunge was essentially a revival of 1970s' hard-rock. However, it was also identified with the musical renaissance of Seattle, that suddenly became one of the world's centers for rock music, and "grunge" came to include just about any band that played in that city. The road had been opened in the late 1980s by Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Melvins and Mudhoney, with four distinctive styles that involved "hard" vibrations. Those were the four cardinal points of Seattle's grunge. Nirvana had turned grunge into a slot machine. Alice In Chains (1) perfected a form of gloomy pop-metal and of power- ballad with Facelift (1990) and especially the stark melodrama of Dirt (1992), the intimate portrait of a drug addict. Layne Staley's psychotic vocals and Jerry Cantrell's sharp riffs transformed their confessions into bloodsheds. Followers of their bittersweet hard-rock included My Sister's Machine, with Diva (1992), Truly, with Fast Stories (1995), and the most successful band of the second generation, the Foo Fighters, formed by Nirvana's drummer David Grohl, Germs' guitarist Pat Smear and Sunny Day Real Estate's rhythm section, with the even poppier Foo Fighters (1995), which was truly a Grohl solo album.
