Scope of Contract:

The Works to be carried out under this contract comprises of the upgrading of the Ethiopian Integrated Transport Program Phase 1: Jimma – Chida and Sodo – Sawla Road Project: Lot 3: Dinke – Sawla. The Project will be financed by a fund received from the African Development Bank, in term of a Grant and Loan.

The Project starts from Dinke town which is located 394.5 km from Addis-Ababa on the main Addis- Butajera – - Sodo road. The Project road then ends at Shifte town. The Project road has a total length of 75.97 km.

The project is found in the South Nations Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). The project will be the secondt part of the Sodo – Sawla Road Upgrading Project which connects Wolayta Sodo and Gamo Goffa Zones and it will upgrade the existing gravel road to an all-weather climate – resilient road transport infrastructure to the rich agricultural area of southern Ethiopia.

The project will upgrade the existing gravel road as per ERA-2002 Design Manual standard of Asphalt Concrete surface. The Project road is designed according to ERA’s Design Manual 2002, and specification is prepared based on ERA’S Standard Specifications, 2002.

The road when completed will have the following widths in Rural and Town Sections. The road will have a 7m carriage way with 1.5m shoulder width on each side in rural section. While in town sections, the road additional lanes / parking lanes and walkways will be provided as per the standard design manual.

The project involves provision and maintenance of site laboratory and accommodation, office, transport, equipment as per Bills of Quantities; site clearance and setting out; earthworks; construction new bridges; replacement or repair of existing minor drainage structures and construction of additional new culverts; construction of drainage facilities such as ditches, outfalls, linings for drains and outfalls and scour check; construction of retaining wall structures; construction of sub-grade, sub-base and base course layers and shoulders; construction of shoulders (outside town sections); construction of asphalt concrete surfacing on carriageway and shoulders; removal of expansive clay layer to the designated depth on expansive soil sub-grade locations, construction of free draining layer and side filling of slopes adjacent to pavement layers; provision and erection of road furniture; accommodation of traffic throughout the construction period; ancillary operations to complete the execution of the works; taking care of the works prior to the issue of a taking-over certificate and rectification of defects during the Defects Liability Period and construction of reinstatement of the construction environment during and after construction completed. The Contractor is required to carry out geotechnical investigation on the bridge sites and carry out foundations need to be revised accordingly. The test results, the analysis and the design need to be approved by the Engineer. It also includes the development of General Management Plan (GMP) for the Maze National Park and provide training on the same to the relevant stakeholders, to be undertaken by the Contractor by assigning a specialized Sub-Contractor who can carry out the service. Moreover, construction of Sawla General Hospital Obstetrics, Gynecology Ward and Operation Unit Building and provision of Ambulance Vehicle will be made by the project.
