Burst U.S. Embassy Prepared by: Australian Centre for Retail Studies Report Highlights: Within the global confectionery market, Australia is ranked 11th for sugar confectionery consumption and 9th for chocolate. Nine out of ten people regularly consume confectionery from both the chocolate and sugar confectionery categories. Approximately 55 percent of confectionery sales are through supermarkets, with the remaining 45 percent sold through outlets such as milk-bars, convenience stores and specialty shops. New products are introduced fairly regularly to the Australian confectionery market; however highly innovative products are less common and this may be an area that offers opportunities for U.S. exporters to be successful in this market. In 2001, Australia was the 15th largest export market for U.S. confectionery products. These efforts can severely limit the impact of social marketing. As a consequence, social marketers often engage in counter-marketing, the development of marketing strategies aimed at undermining the mes- sages promoted by a competitor. In this paper, it is studied the creation of the Easter Bilby brand, developed in Australia as a counter-marketing strategy to the popular Easter bunny. Rabbits are invasive to Australia and have caused massive damage to the country’s biodiversity while the bilby is an endemic and threatened species that better reflects the uniqueness of Australia’s fauna. The interview is being recorded as part of the City of Sydney’s Oral History Project, Commerce and Work in the City of Sydney, and the interviewer is Roslyn Burge. Paul, thank you for your time this afternoon for this project and if we could just start with some personal details, when you were born and where. PM: I was born in Germany in ******** 1927 and in a little place, a village actually, called ******** which is in northwest Germany not far from the Dutch border. RB: And you left there when you were about eleven, I understand. Oral History/Commerce and Work/Paul Mendels/Transcript 2 PM: Yes, we left early in 1939 after the so-called Kristallnacht which sort of trashed the houses of Jews in Germany and burned synagogues and so on. And we went via Holland; we had relatives in Holland where we stayed a few weeks, and then came by boat to Australia. RB: Did your family elect to come to Australia or was that just a happenchance? PM: No, we originally wanted to go to America where my mother had a lot of relations but my father also had a brother in Australia. But after the so-called Kristallnacht it was just whoever would have us first and the landing permit for Australia came, I think, a week before the one for America and we decided to go with it. -

Sydney WeWork, the world’s largest shared office space provider, has opened their first collaborative work space in Australia at DEXUS’ 5 Martin Place in the Sydney CBD, taking 3,260m². The arrival of WeWork in the City Core of Sydney will see the coworking industry transforming from an “underground” movement located mostly in converted warehouses in the City Fringe to a mainstream occupier taking on prime locations in the Sydney CBD. According to Knight Frank research, coworking and shared office space in the CBD has more than doubled over the past ten years. By 2017, there will be more coworking space (26,824m²) in the CBD than any parts of Metropolitan Sydney. Phoenix Transport has leased 8,478m² of industrial space at Frasers’ speculative development at Horsley Drive Business Park, Wetherill Park in south west Sydney. The 10-year lease, together with Hello Fresh’s commitment of 9,500m² at DEXUS’s E3 Quarry project at Greystanes, further demonstrates the strong tenant demand for speculative developments in Sydney West. There is up to 61,005m² of speculative industrial stock currently under construction as at October 2016. Upcoming new developments will include two GPT projects at Eastern Creek Drive, Eastern Creek (26,850m²) and 18-24 Abbott Road, Seven Hills (18,000m²) as well as two buildings Frasers are constructing at Horsley Park (7,915m² and 7,250m² respectively) on the back of two recent pre-commitments by Nick Scalli and Fantastic Furniture.
