You don’t have to be a crazy to work, but it helps: Work in comedies of the 1930s Glyn White, University of Salford Having recently published an overview of film, television and radio comedy (Mundy and White 2012) I am curious how relatively seldom work appears in the foreground of comedy texts. Comedy is drawn to controversial areas and ideological fractures in the social structure with issues of taste, class, gender, race and sexuality consistently appropriating the focus. Work is the background, the normal and quotidian against which the comic can emerge. Certainly there is humour to be found in work activities and environments, but work itself is so monolithic in our lives that our fondest wish is often to escape it and its domination of our time. -

Film Essay for "The Bank Dick"
The Bank Dick By Randy Skretvedt Charlie Chaplin brought pathos to movie come- dy, playing the lovable Little Tramp. Harold Lloyd often played the browbeaten underdog who saved the day through pluck and determi- nation. Harry Langdon was the little man who was frightened by everything. Laurel and Hardy were two innocents clinging to each other in a hostile world. Conversely, W. C. Fields was never traditionally endearing. He embodied all the vices of modern man, and may have been even more likeable because of it. In “The Bank Dick,” he’s a ne’er do well named Egbert Sousé – “accent grave over the e,” he W.C. To the disgust of his family, he tries to support them by “going to theater bank nights, working puzzle con- Far from preventing the theft of the bank’s funds, tests and suggesting slogans.” He spends most of Egbert actually encourages it: a smooth-talking con his time at a saloon called the Black Pussy Cat man, J.
