Over the next dozen years, the brother-sister duo became the biggest-selling American-born artists of the era and one of the most beloved of all time. The two-CD Carpenters Gold – 35th Anniversary Edition (A&M/UTV Records), released February 10, 2004, celebrates their enduring popularity by collecting most of their singles (all 21 Top 40s), many of them in their later remixed versions; numerous popular album cuts, and a few rarities--40 songs in all, each digitally remastered. The package also includes a reminiscence by Richard, who produced the compilation, as well as his recollections about each recording. Featured are three selections previously unreleased in the U.S.: the 1999 completions of “Leave Yesterday Behind,” a 1978 recording; their 1980 version of “The Rainbow Connection” that fans have clamored to be released for years, and “California Dreamin’,” a 1967 recording starring a 17-year-old Karen. Their debut single in 1969 was a ballad version of “Ticket To Ride” that showed some chart potential by reaching #54. Then came the gold: “(They Long To Be) Close To You” (#1), “We’ve Only Just Begun” (#2), “For All We Know” (#3), “Rainy Days And Mondays” (#2), “Superstar” (#2), “Hurting Each Other” (#2), “Sing” (#3), “Yesterday Once More” (#2) “Top Of The World” (#1) and “Please Mr. Postman” (#1). Desideri Advisor: Leah Anderst This thesis explores how a squeaky-clean object transformed into a girl-next-door icon and became a role model for generations to come. And in an industry built on illusions and dreams, reality wore many masks. Still in its beginning stages and looking to sell tickets, the motion picture industry needed to reconstruct its current downscale public image by presenting a much-improved polished and upscale public image to audiences, all while silencing contradictory images and information.

I would borrow my Mum’s Carpenters cassette tapes and play them over and over in my bedroom. I loved these songs with Richard’s lush arrangements, Karen’s warm alto voice and the delicious harmonies they created. As a teenager and young adult, I admit I was a CCF (Closet Carpenters fan!!), but visiting friends’ houses I would often notice a Carpenters CD in their collections. The Carpenters seem to be everyone’s ’guilty pleasure’. In 2003, I moved to the USA and one night at my weekly jazz club residency, I decided to sing a Carpenters song. It was the first time I’d ever sung a Carpenters song in public. I will never forget the reaction of the crowd and their enthusiasm after I’d finished singing. I tried singing that same song in some other venues and the reaction was always the same - overwhelming enthusiasm for the music of this brother-sister duo. It was then that the idea for this show began to formulate. Since then the production and content of “Superstar” has taken many twists and turns and undergone many changes and re-writes.
