FLYERS VS. DEVILS

This series marks the third and fourth of eight games between the clubs this season, and the first since the last week of January. The Devils had been scheduled to come to Philadelphia in February, but the games were postponed due to COVID situations affecting both teams. As a result, they will face one another five times over the Flyers’ final nine games of the season, including four consecutive contests from April 25 – May 1, which will be a first in Flyers regular season history.

The Flyers are returning to playing the Devils eight times in a season, something they did for three seasons from 2005-06 through 2007-08. Prior to that, the Flyers and Devils played seven times per season from the point the franchise relocated to northern New Jersey in 1982 through the NHL’s realignment following the 1992-93 season.

SEASON SERIES Tuesday, January 26, 2021 – Flyers 5, New Jersey 3 at Prudential Center: James van Riemsdyk scored twice on the power play to kickstart the Flyers and the team recovered from a brief Devils comeback to pull away for the win, interrupting a two-game winless streak. van Riemsdyk’s first atlly came with 4:57 left in the first period and his second came 59 seconds into the second, opening up the two-goal advantage. New Jersey scored twice in the span of 4:44 later in the period to tie things up at 2-2 in the second intermission, but the Flyers got the game’s next two tallies – from Nolan Patrick at the 7:03 mark and from Joel Farabee just over 5 ½ minutes later – to put the game out of reach. An empty-netter from Ivan Provorov made it 5-2 with 1:36 to play; the Devils added one more with 1:08 remaining to close out the scoring. Brian Elliott turned aside 24 saves to take the win, while Scott Wedgewood absorbed the loss with 26 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – James van Riemsdyk; 2 – Ivan Provorov; 3 – Claude Giroux.

Thursday, January 28, 2021 – Flyers 3, New Jersey 1 at Prudential Center: The Flyers scored a pair of early third period goals to pull away from the Devils and take their second win of the week at Prudential Center. New Jersey struck first on a goal from Damon Severson 7:11 into the contest, but it would be the only puck that got by Carter Hart on the evening. The Flyers tied things up just over two minutes later on a goal from Nate Prosser, and then took the lead when Michael Raffl poked home a loose puck 2:10 into the third period. Claude Giroux picked up an insurance marker at the 6:26 mark. Hart ended up with 31 saves in taking the win, while Scott Wedgewood absorbed the loss with 14 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Carter Hart; 2 – Claude Giroux; 3 – Erik Gustafsson.

LAST GAME

Monday, March 22, 2021 – NY Islanders 2, Flyers 1 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers fired 37 shots on goal but could only get one past Ilya Sorokin in a 2-1 OT loss to the Isles. After a tight opening 32 minutes, Oskar Lindblom finally got one through with 7:57 left in the second period. But Oliver Wahlstrom pounced on a loose puck to tie it 4:06 into the third, and Anthony Beauvillier picked up the game-winner 3:41 into the extra session. Sorokin stopped 36 Flyers shots to earn the win, while Brian Elliott had 18 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Ilya Sorokin; 2 – Anthony Beauvillier; 3 – Oskar Lindblom.

Sean Couturier was 12-for-13 (92.3 pct) on faceoffs. It is the second-best faceoff performance of his career in games where he’s taken more than one draw, only ranking behind a perfect 13-for-13 faceoff night that he had on Dec. 1, 2018 at Pittsburgh.

Justin Braun led the Flyers with five shots on goal, which ties his high with the Flyers done twice previously. His career high in a game is six, done twice with San Jose. It’s the eighth time Braun has had five or more shots on goal in 696 career games.

Every skater on the Flyers roster recorded at least one on goal.

Kevin Hayes was credited with six hits, which ties a career high set earlier this month on March 13 vs. Washington.

. NOTES OF THE NIGHT

Last night the Flyers were able to end a streak of 11 consecutive games of allowing three or more goals. Per NHL Stats &Information, it’s the first time that has happened to the Flyers since November 2006 and only the 11th time in franchise history. The others are below.

Vigneault led the Flyers to one of the NHL’s best turnarounds in 2019-20. At the time of the NHL’s pause of the season due to COVID-19, the Flyers had played 69 games and were 41-21-7 for 89 points, good for the sixth-best record in the league and fourth-best in the Eastern Conference. Vigneault was the runner-up in voting for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for his work in engineering the turnaround.

Vigneault enters the 2020-21 season with 1,285 games of experience as an NHL head coach over parts of 17 seasons. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, he served as the head coach of the New York Rangers for five seasons (2013-18), the Vancouver Canucks for seven seasons (2006-13) and the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He also served as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, guiding the squad to a silver medal.
